Re: BC Lions Coaching Changes
I'm not sure of the contract status of the rest of the Lions coaching staff, but I was surprised there were no other causalties. I think that could mean that the next HC will be a promotion of someone already on the staff. I think Benevides would have the advantage over Maksymic given he has previous HC experience. Don't forget Bene coached the LIons to a 13-5 record in 2012. Sure, it was a talented team but the current Lion's roster is pretty solid as well. When Travis Lulay retired Bene joked that if Travis had stayed healthy he'd probalby still be the HC of the BC Lions.

Re: BC Lions Coaching Changes
The BC Lions under Rick Campbell era will go down as quite non-descript imo. They played a few playoff games.
One thing about taking on the role of HC and perhaps a lesson learned from Mike O'Shea is to not take on dual responsibilities and allocate responsibility to others. I know that is not the current trend with Dinwiddie, Milanovich, Mace, Dickenson, and Maas all doing two jobs. Gives a guy a couple of meat shields in the event things don't go as planned right off.
It will be interesting to see what they do do differently with essentially the same people running the show. I like the idea of Steinhauer for the simple fact he brings in a new philosophy. Not to say others would not do the same.

Ed Hervey named GM in Edmonton, what does this mean for Geroy?
Would love to see him back here in some capacity.

Re: BC Lions Coaching Changes
Well it means Geroy is now the former Interim GM. Looking on their website he is no longer listed in any capacity. That doesn't necessarily mean he's not under consideration to continue on in some capacity. Their FOPS org chart is currently thin with Hervey as VP FOPS/GM and Shahbaz Dhillon as Manager, FOPS. Dhillon is quite green as 2024 was his first year in a FOPs capacity anywhere.Heisenbeamer wrote: Wed Nov 20, 2024 11:42 am Ed Hervey named GM in Edmonton, what does this mean for Geroy?

Re: BC Lions Coaching Changes
The reason that there are no other coaching casualties is to give the new HC, be he from within or outside the organization, the opportunity to keep or let go whoever he wants for assistant coaches. So at this point in time there is no strong indication of where the new HC will come from.Belize City Lion wrote: Wed Nov 20, 2024 10:16 am I'm not sure of the contract status of the rest of the Lions coaching staff, but I was surprised there were no other causalties. We need to fix our broken defence with an attacking one. I would go after Thorpe from Montreal.
Re: BC Lions Coaching Changes
Geroy was a great player and a super well liked person, but what has he done to show that he is worthy of a front office position? The last two years he has gone on record at the start of each year telling everyone how much talent Edmonton has and look at where they have ended up. Either he cant evaluate talent or he was lying?Heisenbeamer wrote: Wed Nov 20, 2024 11:42 am Ed Hervey named GM in Edmonton, what does this mean for Geroy?

Re: BC Lions Coaching Changes
Quite true. No changes announced yet as that would be imposing such changes on the HC yet to be named. The new HC must be given theDanoT wrote: Wed Nov 20, 2024 12:13 pmThe reason that there are no other coaching casualties is to give the new HC, be he from within or outside the organization, the opportunity to keep or let go whoever he wants for assistant coaches. As for contracts typically position coaches are on year to year deals which expire Dec 31. Coordinators are the ones who might be on multi-year deals whose terms also run out Dec 31. What is unknown is which of BC's Coordinators still have term left beyond this year.

Re: BC Lions Coaching Changes
What GM, acting GM or AGM isn't going to tell everyone how much talent their team has? None. What's he gonna do? Go out and say the team his boss Jones assembled lacked talent? Gotta publicly tow the company line.....if you want to keep your job.tedbear wrote: Wed Nov 20, 2024 12:18 pmGeroy was a great player and a super well liked person, but what has he done to show that he is worthy of a front office position? Re: BC Lions Coaching Changes
Thinking about what Ryan Rigmaiden might bring to the table and looking at guys like Kenny Lawler who he brought to Winnipeg makes me think the new look is going to be more muscle car than mini van. Longshot guess is Rasheed Bailey signs a team friendly deal to come to camp and could be a good addition.
Would also like to see a good effort made to bring Chase Claypool to the league. I don't believe he is currently playing.

Re: BC Lions Coaching Changes
Chase Claypool isn't currently playing because he is currently (and likely always has been) a head case. Another Duron Carter type, only even less of a good teammate.
Re: BC Lions Coaching Changes
LaPo is just a telegenic Adam Rita.Hambone wrote: Tue Nov 19, 2024 12:30 pmI'd be willing to roll the dice on Pierce. Steinauer would also be intriguing. Lapo? No way. I've made my opinion know about Chris Jones. Despite that and Lapo being a genuinely likeable person if I had only 2 choices put forth for HC, Jones or Lapo I'd take Jones. Lapo's record as a HC is poor to put it bluntly going 22-50-0 for a 0.306 winning percentage and that's including going 10-8-0 when Winnipeg advanced to the Grey Cup in 2011. He was 12-42-0 for 0.222 in his other 3-1/2 season in Winnipeg and Ottawa. Anything above OC or playing a coach on TSN and the Peter Principle kicks in for Lapo.maxlion wrote: Tue Nov 19, 2024 12:09 pm If Purifoy’s recent comments in the media about being left off the all star team are indicative of what kind of person he is, it is easy to see how he would soon wear out his welcome.
I was surprised to see Steinauer’s name mentioned as a coaching candidate. He is an intriguing possibility, certainly more so than Lapo. I’m unsure about Buck. He’s been very good as an OC. Is he head coaching material? I have no idea.
If you forced me to choose between Jones and LaPo, I'd eat the barrel of the gun myself.
Re: BC Lions Coaching Changes
Duron Carter was actually a capable downfield blocker. So this analogy doesn't quite work.DanoT wrote: Wed Nov 20, 2024 2:28 pm Chase Claypool isn't currently playing because he is currently (and likely always has been) a head case. Another Duron Carter type, only even less of a good teammate.
Re: BC Lions Coaching Changes
I do think this is a desirable job. There is a stable ownership and business side in place in a large market with two starting caliber QBs at the moment. You aren't getting personnel say but other than that you could do much worse as a HC.
I don't think Campbell got a raw deal at all. This team lost because of the rigidity in it's coaching; a rigidity that comes from the philosophy of the Head Coach. In this instance, the buck stopped where it should have. This team had better than 9-9 talent.
For that reason, I'm agnostic on all three coordinators. I do think that of the three I'm the least enthusiastic about Phillips. We don't have the horses up front to run his scheme and they probably aren't coming any time soon.
I didn't see much reason to be impressed with MB as either the Head Coach or Defensive Coordinator in his previous stints in those two roles. As a Special Teams Coordinator, though, he's fine.
I really don't know whether Mac's shortcomings as OC were because of Campbell or because of his own rigidity and play calling limitations. I would really like to know who put together the game plan that won the road game in Montreal, which was completely different than every other game last year. If he was suffocating underneath Campbell's direction, keep him. If it's him, he has to go.
I do think an outside voice is necessary. I'd target Pierce if he's ready but keep Benevides in his current role and swap out the other two.

What if, and hear me out here, instead of rushing four and hoping that pass rush gets home, we brought in a coordinator that only rushes three?tedbear wrote: Wed Nov 20, 2024 12:15 pm We need to fix our broken defence with an attacking one. I would go after Thorpe from Montreal.
