Re: 2011 schedule released

Lions must be quite pleased to be getting four of their final six games at home in the new BC Place. The price they pay for that is a stretch from Aug. 19 to Sept. 24 with just one home game and four on the road. Could be a real pivotal point of the season.

It also means no home game during the PNE this year which is good from a parking standpoint or bad if you took advantage of using your game ticket to get into the fair.

Stamps and Eskimos making two visits to Vancouver in 2011. Can't remember the last time the Riders weren't one of the teams.

Yeah, the way the math works out for 18 games and two four-team divisions, there's always one of three western rivals that makes only one trip here in a given regular season. I just checked the schedules back through 2005 on cfl.ca and the odd team out each year has been as listed below. Seems they don't rotate it evenly but they're probably up against pre-emptive factors such as what led to the Argos' Labour Day non-participation this year.

2011: Ssk
2010: Edm
2009: Edm
2008: Cgy
2007: Ssk
2006: Cgy

In each case, including this year, the odd team out was scheduled as the pre-season visitor so they did manage to balance it that way. In 2005 with Ottawa still in the league that meant only one division rival could visit twice, which also happened to be Ssk.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

Re: 2011 schedule released

scheduling is one of the weakest links for the CFL.

1. re: Argos, their is no reason why they could not have still had the TiCats for their opponent on Sept. 4 & 10. A league that markets itself on tradition needs to preserve traditions. Argos-TiCats on Labour Day weekend is one the traditional match ups that works. Better to play the Sunday of the weekend against your traditional rival than on the Friday vs. BC. Or move the labour day game to Hamilton and play the rematch on Monday night September 12. But start building your season schedule around these traditional match-ups and work out the rest of the dates from there.

2. BC opens on road in Montreal on Thursday June 30. 1 out 3 for the schedule maker. Good that Montreal opens at home, as should be the privilege of the Grey Cup champs. But the league should open on July 1 and it should be a Grey Cup re-match. As far as many Lions fans are concerned, a home opener on work day at 4:30pm might as well be a third pre-season game.

3. like I said last year, the season should end with games against teams in your own division. How hard is that with 4 teams in each division, especially considering some teams have to play each other 4 times! We might catch a break as Montreal typically has nothing to play for on the last week of the season, so combined with the travel factor, we might have an easy win which will most likely have big implications for our post season seeding. Still, I'd rather have all the hype and excitement that comes from playing a division rival on the last week of the season in what is effectively a 4 point game.
