Vince Lombardi once said: "Statistics are for losers." The losing team's supporters might try to take solace in the fact that the statistics show that their team outplayed the team that won on the scoreboard.
He might have been talking about last night's Lions - Bombers game. No offense intended for the Bombers who played their hearts out last night.
...............
Bombers
Passing (comp/att/yds) 21/31/285
Rushing (att/yds) 21/109
Total Yards (Net) 377
Lions
Passing (comp/att/yds) 17/33/241
Rushing (att/yds) 21/73
Total Yards (Net) 289
.................
An edge to the Bombers in offensive statistics in a closely contested game.
So how did the Lions win?
Wally Buono, another coach heading to his league's Hall of Fame, once said that about 7 plays usually determine the outcome of a game.
What were some of the key plays of this hard-fought game?
* Ricky Foley recovering the opening kickoff for the Lions.
* Lions D stopping Charles Roberts from the 1-yard-line in the 1st quarter.
* Lions D stopping Charles Roberts again as above.
* Otis Floyd stripping the ball from Charles Roberts with 47 seconds left
Some others:
* Jackson's first pass of the game to Geroy for 16 yards gets things going on O
* Joe Smith's first 2 runs of the game for 11 yards down to the 5 yard line
* Clermont's TD reception of a deflected ball
* Jarious passes twice to Geroy for 29 yards on a key drive for a TD in 4th Q
* Bret Anderson's 2 field goals

Also an EPIC play - out-circused any Paris Jackson catch!* Clermont's TD reception of a deflected ball

I thought it was a key play by Phillips to not only recover the football in the end zone, on Otis Floyd's strip, but to pick it up and run it out!!There were some huge plays in that game that enabled us to win. I think you pretty much got them all. The only one I would add is Ryan Phillips' last second INT to make the game official.
"When I went to Catholic high school in Philadelphia, we just had one coach for football and basketball. He took all of us who turned out and had us run through a forest. The ones who ran into the trees were on the football team". (George Raveling)
And hold onto the ball with all the large bodies around trying to strip him of it.Blitz wrote:I thought it was a key play by Phillips to not only recover the football in the end zone, on Otis Floyd's strip, but to pick it up and run it out!!There were some huge plays in that game that enabled us to win. Entertainment value = an all time low
If he had just fallen down in the endzone, wouldn't it have been treated the same as an interception with a Lion ball at the 20?Blitz wrote:I thought it was a key play by Phillips to not only recover the football in the end zone, on Otis Floyd's strip, but to pick it up and run it out!!There were some huge plays in that game that enabled us to win. Yes if he had gone down in the endzone it would have been a "touchback". No points and the Lions get the ball at 20. However, I am uncertain if the ball actually went into the endzone. Also with the pile being where it was, he didn't have to go far to try and get through the main push and then he would have been gone.Shi Zi Mi wrote:If he had just fallen down in the endzone, wouldn't it have been treated the same as an interception with a Lion ball at the 20?Blitz wrote:I thought it was a key play by Phillips to not only recover the football in the end zone, on Otis Floyd's strip, but to pick it up and run it out!!There were some huge plays in that game that enabled us to win. Plus I'm thinking Phillips is more looking at the opposition endzone more and more.
Now that I don't live in Quesnel do I need to change my handle??
