A 6th rd pick seems like a light investment for a NI Dlinemen, hopefully Ellis can attend mini camp then the full traning camp.CFL.ca Staff

Coach Buono makes Supplemental Draft Pick

Re: Coach Buono makes Supplemental Draft Pick
Since Lions have Als first round pick for 2012, I guess it is ok to spend their own first round pick to get this guy in the supplemental draft. Draft picking is such a crap shoot anyways.
Re: Coach Buono makes Supplemental Draft Pick
They didn't spend a first, they spent a sixth.DanoT wrote:Since Lions have Als first round pick for 2012, I guess it is ok to spend their own first round pick to get this guy in the supplemental draft. Draft picking is such a crap shoot anyways.

Re: Coach Buono makes Supplemental Draft Pick
So it seems Wally has not given up on the possibility of having non import D Linemen, aside from Brent Johnson.
Not much info available on Alex Ellis.
6'1" 306 lbs.
A long shot I would think to even make the PR. But probably worth the 6th round pick.
Laurent might have been the guy to get. One account said he "could" be an impact player this year.

From what I can find, Ellis hasn't played at Wilfrid Laurier since 2007.
Ellis drafted by B.C. Lions
Ellis drafted by B.C. Lions
Re: Coach Buono makes Supplemental Draft Pick
Which may be the reason he was in the supplemental draft. No loss and potential gain for the 6th spot, afterall didn't we use our 6th round selection on Chapdelaine's son during last years draft?B.C.FAN wrote:From what I can find, Ellis hasn't played at Wilfrid Laurier since 2007.
Ellis drafted by B.C. Lions

And he was available to the Lions if they wanted to use one of their 1st Rd picks........Edmonton got him with their 2nd Rder.WestCoastJoe wrote:

All the yipping before the draft had Poblah and Laurent going in the top 4 of this years draft if they had been eligible.......yet Edm, BC (twice), TO, Ham, Cal and Sask all took a 1st RD pass on Laurent......Wpg even took a 2nd RD pass !!

Re: Coach Buono makes Supplemental Draft Pick
Perhaps a good poker game played by all on Laurent, or it could be as we have told that the 2012 draft looks to be very good. So while Laurent may have been a top selection this season, his ability may not be as wanted comparing the potential on next seasons draft. If you talk up a player as well, a team may over pay for him, and in this case I can only hope so.Shi Zi Mi wrote:And he was available to the Lions if they wanted to use one of their 1st Rd picks........Edmonton got him with their 2nd Rder.WestCoastJoe wrote:

From what I've read Laurent has his sights set on the NFL. Even Tillman admits this is a gamble - at least in the short term. I'm not sure Wally and company wanted to risk another Danny Watkins fiasco.Rammer wrote:Perhaps a good poker game played by all on Laurent, or it could be as we have told that the 2012 draft looks to be very good. Unfortunately, it seems that this scenario is becoming more and more familiar. We would be happier as CFL fans if we could count on our drart choices being available.David wrote:

On the other hand, it is one more way to separate the skilled personnel managers from the not so skilled. And more successful CFL teams can gamble a bit more on availability vs teams that need to fill a need.
Re: Coach Buono makes Supplemental Draft Pick
In Laurent's defense, we're talking about the Supplemental Draft here. These guys are Canadians by a technicality. I'm guessing that by growing up south of the 49th, he didn't follow the CFL all that much.WestCoastJoe wrote:Unfortunately, it seems that this scenario is becoming more and more familiar. Re: Coach Buono makes Supplemental Draft Pick
Well, not the first thread I've started here on Lionbackers but am curious..what is the proper way to write "Wally Buono"?
-Coach Buono?
-Wally B?
-Buono?
Secondly, to me when prospects look South it just speaks to the athletes that there are in this league, they can play football professionally in any league and play at the highest levels of the game.
Should I write that mega tool in Toronto and inform him that he is turning his back on a great game with some of the best athletes in football?

Re: Coach Buono makes Supplemental Draft Pick
So how does this supplemental draft process work? Is it sometype of sealed e-bay-like bid? Do you get another crack at bidding if it turns out someone bid higher? I'm guessing its just like a normal type draft with the same order of teams drafting except when its your teams turn you don't have to make a pick. If you do make a pick in a round, you forfeit whatever round you took a player in next years draft.... Just curious

Not having researched the process, here is my guess ...notahomer wrote:So how does this supplemental draft process work? Is it sometype of sealed e-bay-like bid? Closed envelope auction, but done electronically.
Place your best bid. Top bid wins. No re-bids, just one shot.
If teams put in 1st pick bids, it would go to the team whose 1st round this year is higher. Winnipeg would win the bid if they put a 1st in, which they did for the receiver.
Re: Coach Buono makes Supplemental Draft Pick
Most of us just call him Wally. That's no sign of disrespect to his various positions. That's just who he is. When he walks on and off the field, we call out to him as "Wally" and he responds with a smile and wave. He was just "Wally" when my daughter asked him to pose for pictures with my granddaughter. That's also how fans of other teams refer to him when they're being kind. I hope he doesn't mind.ed_lunsford wrote:Well, not the first thread I've started here on Lionbackers but am curious..what is the proper way to write "Wally Buono"?
