A Call to Common Sense - soapbox message

I'm just gonna throw this out there and everyone can take what they want from it.

I'm just hoping that we can drastically reduce (like to 0) the number of posts that pertain to Riderfans.com. Let's keep what happens over on Riderfans.com to over there. I am quite sure they are hoping the same thing will happen there.

Let's keep this forum open to good discussion on football topics (GForce - a CFL fan who happens to cheer for the Riders - has started one such good one here tonight and for that I thank him).

Also, should you go over to Riderfans.com, keep this in mind. It is a RIDERS fan board. They are going to see things with a green tint much like we see things with an orange tint. And here's the rub - it's their board they are entitled to do so (same thing goes for Lions fans here)!! If you question their viewpoint, take off your orange glasses and put on a pair of green ones and try looking at it from that POV. I would also request that anyone going over there does keep it civil and try to engage in FOOTBALL discussion. I did a cursory look at their board tonight and saw many of the same complaints I have seen here, namely the lack of good football discussion threads. So if you are going to Riderfans.com this week, please do all Lions fans a favour and keep it to football discussion, much like Gforce did with his thread and much like we get from some of the respected Rider fans we get on here (you guys know who you are).

On the flip side of things, I would ask that non-lion fans that come here, please respect that this is a Lions board and we see things with an orange tint here. Be respectful to the people that post here, understand where they are coming from, and to post with that knowledge.

Let's keep it football on both sides and just enjoy the game.

I like some good-natured ribbing just as much as the next person, but as too often happens in cyberspace, it can VERY easily be taken out of context, especially because it is done behind screens and we can't always see the grin that was to accompany the remark.

And my final note, let's ALL remember that fans are required for ALL teams. If there aren't fans for one team, then NONE of us get to enjoy the CFL like we do. This is a gate driven league and NONE of the teams can afford to have ANY of the fans to not come to games. And as such, we here as Lions fans, need the Rider fans, the Eskie fans, the Stamps fans, Argo fans, the Als fans, the Ticat fans, the Bomber fans, and hopefully the Ottawa fans so that we can enjoy our Lions. At the end of the day we are all CFL fans.

Well said. I like to visit riderfans, but I prefer to engage in
respectful discussions about football. I'll defend the Lions anytime when warranted but I also realize it's a Rider fan board and they have the last word.

Not to defame anyone's character or slander their name, but the claims at RF of bc place being the worst environment to watch a game in, because of rude fans are somewhat exaggerated.

I'm not gonna claim that we're the nicest, but, if you're gonna go into enemy territory, especially one where your team is hated, expect to get the gears, to some degree. I'm not encouraging that sort of behaviour, but, if you respond to it, you're only egging the hometown fans on some more.

And I call BS on that. Good natured ribbing is acceptable and should be able to cut both ways. A CFL fan should be welcoem to wear his/her jersey in ANY stadium.

However, there is a line that has been crossed (in ALL CFL stadia) but should never be condoned by ANY CFL fan. As a Lions fan I don't want to see ANY negativity towards our CFL brethren by supposed "Lions fans", regardless of what colour jersey they are wearing.

Put it in perspective: the Rider fan next to you bought and paid for that ticket. That money is going into the LIONS coffers to help the Lions field a team and pay our superstars their salary. That is a ticket that a "Lions fan" (or just someone from Vancouver) didn't bother to buy and possibly not give the Lions the revenue. So regardless, of the jersey they wore, by purchasing a ticket, that fan has helped to support the Lions. And in my books that is good!

I agree, wearing enemy colours in a stadium, I expect verbal heckling, everyone should.......I heckle just as much as the next guy.....Its part of sports, trying to get into the enemy's head......

I was actually inspired to do it by another Lion fan, he commented on the lack of football talk on both sites, so I did something about it, and that thread even spread to Riderfans, the thread is doing its job........focusing on football.......

I said, some degree. It should go without saying what acceptable behaviour constitutes, however, there are inherent risks of walking into enemy territory wearing the opposing jersey. Unfortunately, whenever they do open BC Place up to the masses, you will draw more fairweather fans who are likely to cause trouble. That's just the way the Vancouver sports fan is.

We agree on the following:
Do I commend him/her for giving their money to the Lions franchise? Yes
Do they deserve to be treated fairly and with respect, regardless of the jersey they're wearing? Yes
Will they be treated fairly? I hope so, then again, because of the way the fairweather fan is, hope is as positive as I can get.

Perhaps, it's just me, and my view on the Vancouver sports fan, I tend to set the bar lower than others, based on experience (not my own doing, but actions taken by others) as a Vancouverite taking in various sporting events. However, I do find that people that attend events in BC Place, for whatever reason, don't do as much hooting and hollering during the anthem (s) than those in GM Place.

As long as physical abuse doesn't happen I am okay with anything else, I have been in a stadium cheering for the enemy, I expect hecklers, I can heckle back but I just expect it.....Some people get offended by it though, which they shouldn't......

I went to 2 away games this season (Calgary and Toronto) both times I walked out with an opposing fan shaking my hand. You can cheer your team on and still have the respect of the opposition fans around you.

As for RF.com they have a large number of posters that are insightful and articulate and good for a debate. There are a few who can not stand any opinion that isn't a shade of green and that is expected on a Riders board. This also includes to a Mod who has been known to use their privilege with great zeal. :sigh:

On the flip side, many posters on all sites use the anonymity of the web to abuse rather than discuss, and I can see why no board would want that. Post if you want but lets keep it on the topic of football. :rockin:

Gforce is a great example of an opposing team fan that adds to, not distracts from, the board.

Alright, since we're preaching, and I've likely sat through more sermons than most (my dad was a minister when I was a kid, so I've heard plenty) I just wanted to add, I've never been on the Riders fan site, and I never will, but I understand they are complaining about Lions fans, and I have to say, in my experience, they have a leg to stand on. At last years WF, there was an elderly lady in the front (or second) row that was wearing a Riders jersey, and there were a few drunk jerks about a dozen rows who thought it would be funny to throw peanuts at her, an old lady! I happen to know from being a seasons ticket holder, and from talking to members of this site this year that the regular and true Lions fans are NOT like that!

On the 18th, I hope we kick the Riders ass as bad, if not WORSE than last year! But let's be classy towards the visiting Riders fans (to a point- hecking/verbal abuse is fine, physical abuse/throwing things at them, not cool!)

But by all means let's make as much noise and disrupt and heckle the Riders players to the furthest extent we can!!

GO LIONS GO!!

My two kids and I went to last years WF. We sat beside two Lion fans and we had a great time. It also helped that we were in a section that was about 50/50 Rider/Lions fans.

On the other hand at another game at BC place we were verbally assaulted by a group of young men during half-time. I won't call them fans because they were wearing NFL gear.

This year my wife is coming too (although she is a Bomber fan :thdn:  )

So I like going to sites and talking football, but ya the dope smoking inbred  tree hugger and zero-till inbred hillbilly comments get a little tired after awhile.

Yeah, it's been a few years since I've been home, but even back then (1998) Soundy and I had our season tix, and went to everygame, and win or lose, you always came across fans of other teams on the way out that would shake your hand or hold their's up and say "good game" if we won. We would do exactly the same to their fans if we'd lost.

As has been noted here and elsewhere, the fans who are at the games, for the most part, respect one another, and their love/support of their team, unlike a lot of what is seen online. And while during the game it's "game on baby" and you rib each other about a bad play, after it's over, it usually, and should always, revert to civility. Congratulating the opposing fans for a good game (even if they lost) and sometimes, you get to engage in a good debate about the game. It would be great to have a post-game Tailgater, and invite opposing fans to join in to have fun, and discuss the game. I think that would be a lot of fun.

God I miss being able to go to games at B.C. Place. Would be nice if they got a team settled here in Otterwa. At least then I'd get to see our guys once a year. My buddy out here is a football nut! Whoever the team in Ottawa is, he supports them, so it would be fun to go with him to a Lions/Ottawa game. Ahhh well, one can always keep dreaming..

When the Green 'Riders are in town, it's always a 50/50 crowd for some reason. Or at least it seems that way, and it always makes for a LOT of noise during the game. It's one of the few times you can actually hear the opposing fans cheering!

yeah, drunk losers. As long as they sell beer at games, we will all have to suffer them from time to time. Now that DOES suck. Sorry you had to suffer it.

OOOOOOOH, that must make for some "fun" gamedays!! heheheh. Well, welcome, in advance, to our house. We hope you have a good time.. well, ok, we also hope that you guys lose. Heheheheh

as the admin here i'd like to say the mods and I plan to have a very low tolerance for trolls this week .... that's not to say we don't welcome rider fans that contribute we just won't have much patience for any that are simply here to stir the pot.

we would also take a dim view of any members her who go to RF and blatantly troll
