ROGERS CFL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Canadian Football League Week # 17

Toronto, ON – (October 24, 2007) – The Canadian Football League (CFL) announced today the Rogers Players of Week for Week #17.

Rogers Players of the Week are selected for on-field excellence by members of the Canadian football broadcasters.

Offensive Player of the Week

RB – Charles Roberts – Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Highlights / Key Stats:

Running back Charles Roberts continued his impressive play with an offensive explosion against Calgary . In the teams’ second meeting in five days, Roberts carried the ball 16 times for a season-high 154 yards and a touchdown, adding two catches for five yards. Early in the fourth quarter, Roberts ran into the end zone from five yards out to give the Bombers a 19-6 lead. This season, Roberts has 262 carries for 1,379 yards with 16 touchdowns. He has also added 47 receptions for 358 yards.

Defensive Player of the Week

DE – Cameron Wake – BC Lions

Highlights / Key Stats:

BC Lions defensive end Cameron Wake had two quarterback sacks for a loss of 15 yards, totaling eight tackles. Wake also had one pass knockdown. This season Wake leads the CFL with 15 quarterback sacks and a team leading 68 tackles. He has also forced three fumbles and knocked down three passes on the campaign.

Special Teams Player of the Week

RB – Ian Smart – BC Lions

Highlights / Key Stats:

BC Lions return specialist Ian Smart continues to be BC’s spark plug, helping the Lions win their sixth straight game. Smart returned seven punts for an average of 15.9 yards per return and a touchdown and fielded three kickoffs for an average of 19 yards per return. Smart also added one missed field goal return for six yards.

With the Eskimos leading by one in the third quarter, Smart returned a punt 81 yards for a touchdown, giving the Lions the momentum and the lead.

Smart leads the CFL this season with 891 punt return yards on 86 attempts and 1,117 kickoff return yards on 48 attempts.

Canadian Player of the Week

LB – Kevin Eiben – Toronto Argonauts

Toronto Argonauts 16 @ Montreal Alouettes 9

Highlights / Key Stats:

Toronto Argonauts linebacker Kevin Eiben had one quarterback sack for a loss of 10 yards, totaling nine tackles. Late in the second quarter Eiben recorded a second down sack which held Montreal to a field goal attempt, keeping momentum in Toronto’s favour entering the half.

Eiben leads Toronto with 87 tackles, has recorded six quarterback sacks and has recovered two fumbles this season.
