2025 Canadian Federal Election Thread

Shortly after being selected as Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney has requested the Governor General to call for an election on April 28, 2025 to dissolve parliament and elect members of the House of Commons.

If the Liberals do not win, then with 45 days in office Mark Carney will be the shortest-serving Canada Prime Minister surpassing:

Sir Charles Tupper - 68 days
John Turner - 79 days
Kim Campbell - 132 days

Which party will you vote for?

Summarizing the current seats:

Liberal - 152
Conservative - 120
Bloc Québécois - 33
New Democratic - 24
Green - 2
People's - 0

Whichever party wins will be working on a time of instability with tensions with the USA among other things.

Re: 2025 Canadian Federal Election Thread

I'm fairly confident judging by the excitement of Mark Carney running for leader of the Liberal Party he can pull off a majority gov't possibly.

The entire landscape underwent a sea change with Trump tariffs and all the negativity and slogans on the right became somewhat irrelevant in light of Trump. Even in Quebec there's a wave of Canadian patriotism that's not been seen in my life time - if ever. The Bloc launch of their campaign was a total cluster bleep.

Singh has also opened badly claiming Carney despite all his writings and sayings will govern as a central banker for the rich. That also for him won't play. The NDP should focus on how they alone forced the Libs into pharma and dental care - as that's factual and try to take votes from Polievre.

Polievre's slogans were great but now Canada is facing an opponent who is massive and wants to crush our economy and annex us.

It's now time for serious people.

Carney resonates for me for these reasons:

> his background and economic experience

> he states Canadians have an income problem - something that low taxes alone wont' fix.

> his values on social programs

> his understanding of generational unfairness and how structurally and systemically it's hard for our youth day.
(meanwhile Polievre is back to tax cuts and hard work - that are no longer the keys to success)

> his focus on gov't spending less and investing more

>his grasp on incentives to business to do more than now

> his focus on building key industiries internally such as for defense spending, infrastructure and housing.

Re: 2025 Canadian Federal Election Thread

There are ethical issues with accepting gifts but this for me is a bridge too far and speaks to how silly some of this gets.

This is not directed at 3 Down Nation as they are just reporting it.
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew accused of conflict of interest for Blue Bombers’ Grey Cup flights
By 3Down Staff -March 24, 2025
A spokesperson for the premier said that Kinew didn’t take the 2023 trip for free, paying the team $8,000 out of pocket. A spokesperson for the Blue Bombers confirmed the payment and said the team didn’t believe reimbursement was necessary as it was intended for fans, sponsors, and families. Kinew was accompanied by his wife, child, and an assistant.

As a crown corp exec at one executive meeting some contended that as I had spoken at conferences that gave key note presenters gifts like paintings, a sculpture of birds among other things - that I should give these to the corporation.

One sculpture I got from CIPs (Canadian Information Processing Society) was from an up and coming local BC artist. I did the event on company time but prepared on my own time. A few weeks later at another event I ran into the CIPs conference chair and asked this question: What would you have thought if I accepted the gift on behalf of ICBC." Answer: "That'd be the last time you'd hear from us." In other words, an insult.

Re: 2025 Canadian Federal Election Thread

I've learned from previous elections, that one can never be sure of exactly what will happen. Already we have seen some events take place, the consequences of which haven't fully played out yet. It appears as though there are going to be two main story lines played out in this election. For the Cons, it is going to be about somehow separating themselves from the US Conservative far right politics of Trump and Co. Something that has been made even harder by what one can only call a foolish move by a foolish Premier in Danielle Smith. As a ardent support of PP, it is very hard to misinterpret her tepid participation in Canada's responses to Trump and his tarifs. She seems to have no difficulty flying to Florida for media spots or to bend the knee but as a Premier in this country in difficult times, can't seem to find her way to either of the last two conferences for First Ministers. That is the kind of behaviour that gifts your opponents material in a campaign.
MC on the other hand is going to be fighting the "more of the same" allegations and an attempt to link him to the last PM. Some are trying to accuse him of financial improprieties. But "beware The Boys Club" seems to be the main thrust of the opposition. That and some attempt to attack him for his weaker grasp of the French language. I don't know how it is going to turn out but I suspect that it may come down to the side that makes the least mistakes. I think the Cons are already down on that score but that can change quickly in politics.

Re: 2025 Canadian Federal Election Thread

Voter turnout has been pitiful in the last quarter century especially in 2021 and Covid-19 may have been an excuse:

2000: 64.1%
2004: 60.9%
2006: 64.7%
2008: 58.8%
2011: 61.1%
2015: 68.3%
2019: 67.0%
2021: 62.3%

It would be amazing if for 2025 it would reach the 70.0% mark. :cr:

Re: 2025 Canadian Federal Election Thread

There are intentions to vote and actually voting.

I've long thought let high school seniors vote in federal elections and provincial.

On Linkedin today:

Scott Wilson on Danielle Smith
https://www.linkedin.com/in/scottwilson ... ivity/all/

"She’s not just advocating for Alberta. She’s importing a foreign ideology. And she’s doing it deliberately.

Meeting with Ben Shapiro’s group in Florida wasn’t just another policy mission. It was a signal—one that pulls well-funded American-style culture wars into Canada’s bloodstream. The same machine that pushes division, anti-institution rhetoric, and “51st state” fantasies is now quietly making its way into our politics—with Smith as its courier.

This isn’t standing up for Alberta. It’s smuggling in a worldview that doesn’t belong here—a worldview built to divide, radicalize, and dismantle national cohesion."

Polievre is silent on Smith telling Breitbart Poliever is "very much in synch with the political direction of the US"

All his messaging is out of the IDU playbook for right wingers.

Destroy your opponent with smears and use rage to get voters to lose faith in their governments and institutions.

Re: 2025 Canadian Federal Election Thread

The Conservatives now have 11 MPs calling for Polievre and his nasty campaign manager Jenni Byrne to resign. Imploding.

When Eron O'Toole made a nice statement on Justin Trudeau's resignation Byrne and the Conservatives trashed him like Trumpers.

Then as ex-military he made a nice statement about Anita Anand as Defence Minister and all hell broke loose in that party and her.
For anyone unsure why Erin is no longer Leader of the Conservative Party…

She supported DEI policies like name, rank, and pronouns. Tampons in men’s rooms, etc…
Jenni Byrne’s Big Gamble
The ruthless tactician behind Pierre Poilievre’s campaign has spent decades shaping Canadian conservatism from behind the scenes. This year’s election will be her greatest achievement—or her undoing.

This is unreal as Nick Nanos is all out Tory blue in his polling.
The federal Liberals have opened up an eight-point advantage over the Conservatives in the latest Nanos Research tracking on Day 9 of the federal election campaign.

Re: 2025 Canadian Federal Election Thread

I was reading tweets about people voting already, now I know how.

You use a special ballot that you write in your candidate - so get that name right.

Re: 2025 Canadian Federal Election Thread

That only works if you have a candidate. Given that 4 have bit the dust in the last 2 days, I wonder what would happen to any of those early ballots in those ridings?

Now that Trump seems to have taken a lighter touch on the Tariff front, who gets the credit? Carney or Danielle Smith? Either way, it likely has huge ramifications for PP. Because nowhere does he even seem relevant in the discussion.

Re: 2025 Canadian Federal Election Thread

Just a day before the Canadian Federal Election, Vancouver has made headlines on an international scale and unfortunately it was negative news in that many international stations such as CNN and BBC as well as the local news in all American cities as well as those in Manila, the Philippines have focused on the Filipino Lapu Lapu festival incident last night in which a car rammed into a crowd and the death toll so far is 11. The amount of coverage is almost as much as the passing of the Pope and his funeral.

NDP Leader and Canadian Prime Minister candidate Jagmeet Singh himself was at the event just minutes before a driver of an SUV drove into a crowd.

Re: 2025 Canadian Federal Election Thread

A horrible event to be sure. Having lived in BC my entire life and in GVRD for the majority of that time, it is easy to look around at other events taking place in the world and think, wow am I lucky to live here. I think the most extreme event that I am aware of was the Stanley Cup Riots. This is a tragic entry into the roll of places that have suffered from needless, horrific violence. The city is reeling today as the impact of what happened begins to sink in. Much regret and sympathy to the victims families.

Re: 2025 Canadian Federal Election Thread

Initial reports at 8:15 PM show that Liberal is leading but it's uncertain as to whether it's going to be a majority or minority:

Liberal - 155
Conservative - 151
BQ - 25
NDP - 10
Green - 1

Re: 2025 Canadian Federal Election Thread

Conservatives have seemingly corner the market of having Leader of the Opposition in their caucas : Erin O'Toole, Andrew Scheer and now Pierre Polievre. Good on them.
