forgot the rules?

At the end of the Bombers/Argos game the announcers were stating how each team on their final possessions were trying to get within field goal range of their kickers.
Why? Have they forgotten the single? The announcers apparently have, let's hope the coaches haven't.

They didn't need to get within the range of a placekicker trying to put the ball between two post eighteen and a half feet apart, but within the range of their punter trying to put the ball over a sixty-five yard goal line and not have it returned.

Don't need three points when only one is needed

Re: forgot the rules?

A field goal becomes realistic around the 45-50 yard line. Is a punt single realistic farther than that? Or would it be a more likely outcome than a fg at that distance?

Re: forgot the rules?

Those "Australian kickers" that some of the teams have seem to be able to kick that far. And it does not have to go over the goal line on the fly. It can bounce multiple times, as long as it goes over. But any team on defense should have someone positioned to field the ball on the first bounce.

In the final seconds, it would be easier to complete a pass for the necessary yardage to get your punter in position than more yardage to get your place kicker in position. if the defensive backs are covering the receiver who goes longer to attempt a reception close enough for the placekicker and not the receiver running a shorter route to get within to punter range
