Not looking like a Grey Cup team, but it's not how you start, it's how youvare playing at the end of the year. Hoping we get more cohesive as the season goes. Both lines have alot of work to do.

Re: Home opener: Lions vs. Stampeders June 15, 2024

There's been several past conversations about CFL vs. NFL, including their rules.

And the BC Lions certainly benefited by the CFL rules with regards to fumbles that go out of bounds in the last Calgary turnover as in the CFL, the last team to touch the ball before it went out of bounds gets possession. So in this case, Josh Woods was smart to quickly tap the ball out of bounds after Dedrick Mills fumbled. In the NFL, the team that had full control of the ball before it went out of bounds gets possession. So if the game had NFL rules, then the Stampeders would still get possession since Woods nor any other Lion had clear control and possession of the ball before it went out of bounds.

Personally, I'll concede that the NFL's rule is more fair in this scenario.

Questionable coaching by Dave Dickenson choosing to gamble on 3rd and 4 with 7 minutes remaining.

Re: Home opener: Lions vs. Stampeders June 15, 2024

It was a tense game but the Lions overcame a slow start and closed out the victory with a strong defensive effort in the second half. Vernon Adams had to scramble to avoid Calgary’s blitzing in the first quarter but the makeshift offensive line didn’t give up a sack, while the Lions got to Jake Maier 4 times, and the makeshift secondary, with 3 rookies at times, gave up some first downs on crossers but kept Calgary off the scoreboard in the fourth quarter when the game was on the line.

The Lions took the lead for good with a 102-yard TD drive in the fourth quarter, featuring clutch catches by Alex Hollins and Ayden Eberhardt and some strong running by Will Stanback.

Props to Hollins (8 catches for 97 yards), Justin McInnis (4 for 91), Ben Hladik (10 tackles, including 3 TFLs, plus an interception) and Maxime Rouyer (4 special teams tackles) for their strong games.

I took in the Lions Thursday practice and got convinced that McInnis is going to have a big season. He really competes for every catch and there's a cockiness about him this year that suggests he's got the confidence to match the skills.

The Lions held the Stamps near the goal line when it looked like a sure TD.
DEF looked good at times. Hladik had a big game.

No sacks was a big improvement.

Robbie, not sure why you think the NFL rule is better than the CFL rule which has the last guy to touch it gets the ball (unless it was 3rd down and didn't go 10 yards). Every fumble in the CFL is an exciting fight.

It seemed after 50 cent was done fans in the upper bowl left with him.

I was at the game and thought the concert was for 3 pm and the game at 4 pm kicking off. 50 cent didn't start until nearly 3:30 and towards the end as I had no idea of the time the game was so start it was like a speaker going on too long. I'd not have felt that if I knew what the schedule was.

Re: Home opener: Lions vs. Stampeders June 15, 2024

I was a season ticket holder when the dome opened and at the first games there - soccer, football, baseball and then Simon and Garfunkel.

I looked up the crowd size as I was surprised this game was the largest ever season opener only to find out this happened oddly:
June 23, 1983: The first BC Lions game under the Dome is an exhibition game between the Lions and the Calgary Stampeders. Canadian rock legends the Guess Who do a concert before the game. Lions win 41-19 in front of 53,472.

I thought the home opener vs Sask was a full house but I can't find the attendance, I do recall the first kickoff was Lui short onside and the Lions recovered.

Big win to go along with the big crowd. Looked like a fun place to be.

Many stood out. V.A. at the top of the list. His most effective play is the Hail Mary which reminded me a bit of Mike Reilly back when. Kudos to the receivers for making catches in tight coverage. I would have given McInnis the reception on the long ball late in the game. Both hands were on the ball when he hit the ground. Other calls went B.C.'s way and it is always fun to see Dave Dickenson frothing at the mouth.

Did Cottoy finish the game? As usual TSN did not report the name of the player needing assistance who I thought may have been Cottoy.

D line played well with Covington showing some leadership. I think his jersey will outsell Betts.

Calgary did not help themselves with the late fumble by Mills being the killer. Jake Maier looked good and could be benefitting through work with Beau Baldwin. Catch of the game may have been the one they did not give to McInnis but Reggie Begelton made two nice "Burnhamesque" grabs at important times. One for the td and the other on third down. Jalen Philpot also played well.

I'm liking the chances for next week already. Imagine people in Vancouver talking about the Lions again.

Being at the game he definitely didn’t finish. Farhan saying he was told it’s believed to be a hamstring injury but isn’t too serious.

TSN really needs to up their game. When Lawler broke his arm in the opener early in the 2nd quarter they didn’t even realize he was out until the teams came back after halftime. How can they not notice the absence of such a key player? Now Cottoy yesterday. That’s on the game producer who is clearly not paying attention and asking the sideline reporter to try and get an in game update.

And put LaPolice in the booth and let him breakdown plays and in game adjustments with a telestrator. Suitor just doesn’t provide any of that for us football nerds.

Cottoy tweaked a hamstring. David Mackie finished the game in his place. Preliminary reports on the postgame show were that it’s not believed to be serious. I would expect him to miss at least one game.

Because simply hitting and batting the ball does not mean clear possession of the ball. So it does make more sense to give possession to the team that had last clear and obvious possession of the ball before it went out of bounds.

Well, the ball was at the BC 48 and the Lions had scored on their previous play and momentum was on the Lions side and the Stampeders felt it was a worthwhile gamble to try to retain possession and if they failed, the consquences wouldn't be too big given that the ball was still on the Lions side. And in the end, the Lions didn't score in their ensuing possession after the turnover on downs.

Since the capacity of BC Place when it opened in 1983 was over 59,000+, then the pre-season game was not a sellout. The Lions official home opener against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in which the Lions won 44-28 had an attendance of 41,801 which is way short of a sellout.

The Lions reached the 50,000+ mark three times at home in the 1983 regular season but the only actual sellout was the Grey Cup game itself at 59,345.

--------------

The Lions missed two extra points with the first one going to the end zone. At 2:07 of the video a fan mistakenly believed that the Lions scored a safety as he gave the safety signal which certainly was not the actual case.

I figured hamstring for Cottoy. After coming out of the tent he walked around the sidelines with an ice pack strapped to the back of his lower thigh just above the knee.
