Home opener: Lions vs. Stampeders June 15, 2024

Leos will be looking to rid themselves of the bad taste of defeat in their season Sunday in Toronto, a game in which they were favoured. Some questions linger.

* Will the club be a bit fragile after giving up 15 point lead at one point and losing by 8? Clearly, the Argos were the better team on the day. Or will they be highly motivated to show that the Argo game was an aberration?

* Can we expect any lineup changes? Knevel struggled mightily at left guard and Schleuger is a possibility. Or is Campbell/Bates looking at it that Ceresna and Orimalade are about as dominant a 1-2 pass rush duo as they're going to see in the league. Mix in guys like Brinkman, Smith, McManus and a lot of Olines will struggle against that defensive line.

* Will VA be affected by the hand injury? Farhan reported yesterday that X-rays proved negative, but that doesn't mean his grip is fine.

The Lions held their first of only two practices this week on Wednesday, after playing Sunday and flying four hours across the country.

According to the CFL injury reports, Michael Couture didn't participate due to a back injury. He played in Toronto but was limited in training camp. The nature of his injury wasn't disclosed then. Rick Campbell said Couture was seeing a doctor about it, and could be cleared to practise Thursday. Tyler Packer is his backup.

DB Ciante Evens also didn't practice Wednesday due to a personal matter, and Garry Peters was limited with an adductor injury.

According to Farhan Lalji, the Lions will have two new starters on the O-line Saturday, Tyler Packer at centre for the injured Michael Couture and American OL Chris Schleuger at left guard for David Knevel. I'm looking forward to watching both. Packer had a great training camp, and looks big and strong. Schleuger was around all last year waiting for his opportunity.

That will likely make for a double-switch, I think they will wind up promoting Peirson from the PR to give them back up depth at C which will probably mean Knevel goes to the 1G unless they break from their practice of the past 3 years and dress 7 OL.

Knevel is listed as DNP on Thursday’s injury report with a foot injury. He’s likely headed to the 1G.

The Lions have made three changes to their starting lineup for the home opener. As expected, centre Michael Couture and LG David Knevel have been moved to the 1-game injured list. Tyler Packer will start at centre and American Chris Schleuger will start at left guard. Andrew Peirson has been activated from the practice roster as the sixth O-lineman.

On defence, Ciante Evans, who missed practice this week due to a personal matter, has also been moved to the 1-game list. Rookie Ronald Kent will start at field halfback alongside rookie cornerback Jordan Perryman. Rookie national linebacker Terrence Ganyi is activated to fill the final roster spot.

Patrice Rene, who didn't practise Thursday due to an ankle injury, is listed as a game-time decision at SAM. If he can't play, Manny Rugamba would likely move from boundary halfback to SAM and Christophe Beaulieu would move up to become a third rookie starter in the secondary.

Or lokombo plays some Sam .. with the hash marks moved more to middle, it’s less of a chase position if they are playing cut or cover-3 a lot. Playing more man, yeah, rugamba.

Cutting sayles was a bad move, Kent would have accepted pr. Depth already tested.

Well we will get to see if Kent looks a lot better playing with the first unit against the Stamps than he did in the pre-season game. The pass rush better be significantly more effective than it was last week against a very good Argos offensive line or it could be a long night.

Hope Packer makes the most of this opportunity.

Second half is going to be key. You know Dickey will make adjustments. Us? We seem to have a pre-existing game plan and are unwaveringly loyal to it.

I hope the guys just settle in and do their role and not try to do too much (the other guy's job) in front of the big crowd.

SammyGreene, I am with you. The D-line needs to generate pressure to flush Maier out of the pocket. That said, it's early, but he seems more comfortable and accurate throwing on the run this year.

Patrice Rene and practice roster DB Charlie Ringland are both taking part in pregame warmups. Only one can be active.

From watching on TSN I see people all the way to the top of the upper deck, it's been awhile since I've seen that. It should be good as long as the o-line can hold up and we don't turn the ball over.
