1040 is now speculating on attendance approaching 40k. Not sure if that will really happen...

But if it does, it'll be a bit of a headscratcher, albeit a pleasant one. All the endless handwringing on here for ages about attendance so often falling short of expectations, blamed on everything from high ticket prices to market indifference to a weak economy to competition for the entertainment dollar and everything in between. And now today we might actually see the highest attendance for a regular season game at BCP, aside from the re-opening last year, in almost 20 years (dating back to 40,556 for Lui Passaglia Night almost 18 years ago to the day on Nov 5, 1994), for, of all things, a COMPLETELY MEANINGLESS game that our marquee player might not even appear in, and it's not like there's not a better Lions option that everyone has known about now for several weeks.

The largest regular season crowd since 1994's LPN, aside from last year's re-opening, was on the same Nov 5 date in 2005: a crowd of 38,847 took in a narrow 13-12 loss to Ssk, a defeat that closed out the all-too-well-documented poor finish to that regular season.

I will be very interested to see the size of the green contingent tonight.

Can't even count the number of times over the years the Lions have thrown out a potential attendance number for a game and they haven't come close to reaching it. For some reason they floated 40,000 out there this morning and it ends up being 36,000 and change instead. Not even close.
The only thing I can think of is they were banking on the majority of the 7-Eleven seats to be sold as well and they were far from it.

I fully agree, SG; I was putting no faith in that figure so I simply noted it as speculation. But it was still the largest crowd since 2008/09/13 (28-23 win v Ssk) when 38,608 attended — a nearly 38 month high. It seemed like the upper level endzone sections above the dressing rooms were more filled than usual and prob accounted for most of the boost, along with the lowest rows of the upper level corners behind the Lions' bench, which until tonight had been tarped off all year (the higher rows of those sections remained tarped off). This seems to lend credence to what we've all been saying for the whole season: the upper level sidelines, at the same cost as those directly below in the lower bowl, are overpriced.

There didn't seem to be any more than the usual amount of Rider supporters, perhaps even less, although the fact that they had little to cheer about might have helped mask their presence. At any rate I can't say the amount of green-clad attendees was overwhelming.
