I usually could not care for death in sports or celebrity deaths. This one seemed to hit home for me, maybe it was his size or maybe it was he had real life problems like any normal person. Most often in sports you think the athlete is this emotionless robot who has a motherboard, wires, and a generator for organs. Turned off once off the field/rink and only to be turned back on once game day has arrived. I thank you Rypien for an entertaining and amazing career that showed that hard work pays off. You also made me realize athletes are not invincible to the emotions and the grueling everyday strain of life. May you find what you are looking for.
Rest in peace RR.

Very Sad - condolences to his family
Tell me how long must a fan be strong? Ans. Always.
Re: Rick Rypien passes away
Suicide is more common than we as a society know, the media curtails information on this topic. Sad that someone with everything ahead in their life would choose this as the final choice, as the pain that his family is going through right now has to be gut wrenching. RIP, hope that someone else learns to reach out before they make this choice by the awareness that this brings.

This really does underscore the challenges that come from mental illness. I haven't actually heard the word suicide officially but I wasn't around the news much today. It can be extremely difficult to treat, in many cases, the treatment comes with its own kinds of challenges in the form of side effects and it is always with you no matter what you do, where you go. Facing it everyday is so tiring and maddening that you wonder how some manage for as long as they do. It takes a special kind of courage to face something like that every day of your life. So unfortunate.

I may be jumping the official word Sir P, but everything but the word has been used, just another way of society pushing this issue into the background.Sir Purrcival wrote:This really does underscore the challenges that come from mental illness. There is a very good reason they don't say suicide in most deaths or if someone is on a bridge threatening to jump. These things used to trigger spates of these events. If on a bridge they say "police incident". In Hong Kong here the media do publish the gruesome details of suicides and with so many high rises flats here it precipitates a lot of copy cats.
Secondly, the coroner in Canada would need to confirm cause of death as well.
At times families just want privacy.
