While I do agree that the problem starts with Buono, we have to stay factual here.
1) A head coach doesn't have to have "Xs and Os mastery", in fact many of the best coaches don't. Let's take a couple quick examples from the NFL: Mike Tomlin of the Steelers leaves the defence, his area of expertise, entirely in LeBeau's hands. Jim Harbaugh, of the Ravens, has only been a special teams coach in the NFL. I could go on. The point is that obviously Buono knows a ton about football, or else he wouldn't have so many wins and wouldn't have had such success in Calgary and in BC. That's not the problem.
Factual?
Mike Tomlin has an area of Xs and Os mastery. Defence.
Jim Harbaugh as a coach I have no opinion on. He was a quarterback at one time. I expect he has a good mastery of the Xs and Os of offence.
And I agree that a Head Coach does not necessarily need Xs and Os mastery. But it sure helps. Vince Lombardi coached O Line a lot. He also coached his quarterbacks. He was an Offensive Coordinator for the New York Giants before he got his Head Coaching opportunity in Green Bay. Tom Landry was Defensive Coordinator before he got his chance in Dallas where he brought Xs and Os innovation to NFL defences.
But I do agree that a Head Coach does not necessarily need Xs and Ox mastery. Marc Trestman, however, has it. John Hufnagel, however, has it. Paul LaPolice is looking like he has it. If a Head Coach does not have it, his OC and DC better have it. Our guys are still unproven IMO as would be Coordinators at the CFL level.
2) Buono should leave the players motivation to themselves. This isn't the movies, and while a Pacino speech once in a while would be nice, they are neither necessary nor particularly effective. Think of the last time you got fired up over watching a motivational movie or even watched Pacino's Any Given Sunday speech. How long did that rush last? A few minutes? I guarantee you, when you step out onto the field, you get one play and its over. That kind of stuff is for high school kids. The expectation for the pick up comes from leaders on the team. What do you expect from the head coach? Simple: this is what we're doing poorly, we need to stop; this is what we're doing well, let's do more of it. Anyone see Pete Caroll get all "motivational", trust me Buono would do more harm than good by acting like a clown.
Motivation does not necessarily come from fiery pre game or half time speeches. Bill Walsh rarely raised his voice. But he communcated so well he was motivational. Even students of his football class at Stanford found him motivational as he discussed the Xs and Os of football. He was definitely a Head Coach who had mastery of the Xs and Os.
At his best, Don Matthews motivated his teams. Communication. Goal setting. Focus. Not movie speeches like Pat O'Brien playing legendary Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne.
So what are the problems I agree with? His record the past three years. His poor personnel decisions. His lack of fresh ideas. His consistent blame on the players.
Agreed.
While I do agree that the problem starts with Buono, we have to stay factual here.
I agree that the problem starts with Buono. Factual? There are lots of facts thown about by bloggers, but blogging is mostly about opinion. Like your opinions, and like my opinions. IMO ...
