2 and outs
B.C. 28
Calgary 28
Saskatchewan 28
Edmonton 27

Scoring drives
Edmonton 27 (34.6%)
B.C. 23 (30.3%)
Saskatchewan 19 (26.0%)
Calgary 20 (24.7%)

You're right that the defence has been horrible. The Lions are last in most defensive categories, including most touchdowns and scoring drives allowed. That's the main reason the Lions are 0-5.
Stats are usually of some interest to players and to fans, and even to coaches.

The above stats do not seem to co-relate to wins and losses.

Perhaps it is a bit like tennis. The sets are almost equal. The games won are almost equal. Serves held almost equal. It is just a few plays, a few points that make the difference. Which players have the resolve? When it counts? Who makes the winning play? Who lets it leak out for his team?

Inexperience on offence has certainly hurt the Lions. 4 receivers who had never caught a pass in a CFL game. An inexperienced quarterback with a host of green receivers, and no running game until game 5.

On defence, it is more a case of leaks in the defensive backfield. Missed tackles. Missed coverages. It hurt of course that there was not a lot of pressure on the quarterback from the 3.4 defence. This was a sytem/scheme problem.

So there have been manifold problems. Leaks and weaknesses all over.

Can we get it together? Win some games? Sure. The CFL can be a topsy turvy league. Look at the stuggles of Montreal and Calgary. Look at the success of Edmonton and Winnipeg.

Could we also go into the tank? Dunno. If the losses continue, it would seem possible.

We are not all that far from winning some games, though.

Re: Trade for Arland Bruce

Overall a good trade and a good week for Wally. If he sat through the year and did nothing, he would be skewered in public opinion for doing nothing. this at least shows that we have not given up on the season.

Bruce is a decent threat and is still explosive. Hopefully, the change in scenery helps him, and us!

It often takes some sort of catalyst to make things happen that you trade a guy. Just maybe this was it.

It will be up to someone else to cast aspersions on Arland Bruce III. Up to somebody else to suggest that Bruce’s last time touching the ball with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats pretty much symbolized what the receiver was on the verge of becoming to a team with big plans.

“That one was going to Carter,” Tiger-Cats quarterback Kevin Glenn said to a questioning offensive co-ordinator and quarterbacks coach Khari Jones Friday night, a slightly bemused look on his face after Bruce stuck his hand up in a desperate attempt to snag a pass that would otherwise have likely landed in the hands of an open Matt Carter. Shortly afterward, Bruce could be seen sitting on a trainer’s table with his leg propped up, arms crossed and a towel around his neck.

he Tiger-Cats traded Bruce to the B.C. Lions for draft picks on Wednesday, three days ahead of a game against the Calgary Stampeders and one day after Bruce met with head coach Marcel Bellefeuille and general manager Bob O’Billovich for what was described as a session to clear the air. Because when you’re Arland Bruce III, every discussion is a meeting.

Re: Trade for Arland Bruce

Bruce could be a good thing for the Lions win/loss record. This year. Obviously not a long term solution.

I would say we have been fortunate to have this quality of players available for a mid-season re-tooling.

J.R. Ruffin.

Jerome Dennis.

Tad Kornegay.

Arland Bruce.

And it is interesting that Wally is not so much developing his own players anymore. Rebuidling with discards from other teams. Not the usual way to compete for a championship.

The Lions have tried to develop their own import receivers, witness Collins, Moore, Black, and lost Arseneux to the NFL. If a speedy, proven receiver like Bruce III/Reth is available, he'll be an upgrade over those guys. We've been looking for a import sidekick to Geroy for years (since we lost C. Brazzell?)...Carlos Rogers, Rufus Sillern, RGM, and so on. It's all about making the playoffs this year and Arland should be a big bonus . I also like the prospects of adding K. Johnson to the offence and our re-vamped running attack.
True about the receivers in BC and trying young ones but BC hashad less success and more duds it seems in the line up than the winning teams.

I watched the Arland Bruce interviews on TSN video or whatever his name is going to be on TSN and this guy just screams out for some mustard on that hot dog. And Brent J thinks that Swaggerville is unearned in Winnipeg?!!! If people thought Casey was all me - this guy invented it and this season he has done nothing but lose his spot in Hamilton. Now if this is the Lions guy to rally around so be it but we all know how the return of Casey turned out as fans and team announced him as their new Messiah.

Re: Trade for Arland Bruce

A little late to the party. Abso-freaking-lutely love the Arland Bruce pick-up.

A credible second receiving option to play opposite the ageless Geroy, make the safety acknowledge the other side of the field rather than locking in on #81. PJack could/might have been this, were it not for the numerous injuries that he's been faced with in 2011. A bridge for this season, allows the young kids to slide one spot down the depth chart/defensive targetlist while still getting valuable game reps.
