Mike Reilly Shows His Stuff - Mike Beamish

http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/Lion ... story.html

Some excerpts from the article by Mike Beamish ...
Despite a masterful, five-minute performance – eight for eight, 108 yards passing, two TDs and a single run of 17 yards – Reilly is still firmly pegged as the No. 3 QB on the Lions depth chart following Wednesday’s 34-6 preseason win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Reilly, a second-year CFL player, is staying, that’s not a surprise. What constitutes an eyebrow-raiser, though, is that head coach Wally Buono has decided to keep Corey Leonard as the team’s fourth quarterback and to park him on the practice or injured roster.
Reilly played very well in his limited time against the Riders. I'm glad that Leonard has found his way onto the Practice Roster. He has potential. He needs some time.
“CFL quarterbacks are built, they’re cultivated, they’re not ready-made,” Buono explained. “I’m trying to invest in the development of quarterbacks. For any organization, you need the ability to have an evolving door. Because quarterbacks are an evolving door. I believe, and the coaches believe, that the the guys we have . . . you’ve got to invest the time, and you’ve got to invest the resources, to give these guys a chance.”

Reilly, however, did look first class, perhaps because of regular attendance in gym class. His wife, Jessica, is operations manager for two Golds Gym locations, in Kennewick and Richland, Wash., and Reilly took advantage of his wife’s connections to access state-of-the-art workout facilities, technical training strategies and dietary guidance during the offseason. He supplied the motivation.
Wally has had many quarterbacks develop in his program over the years.
And now, 25 pounds of extra muscle later, the 6-2, 230 quarterback from Central Washington is ready to bust out of anonymity, at least from the CFL’s perspective.

As a four-year starter with the Wildcats, Reilly broke most of Central Washington’s passing records previously held by Jon Kitna, the well-traveled quarterback still gainfully employed by the NFL, 14 years after graduating from the university in Ellensburg, Wash. He was enough of a running threat to lead the Wildcats in rushing in the 2008 season.

“I see a more aggressive, competitive guy than I initially thought,” Buono said of Reilly. “He’s aggressive in his mind and aggressive as an athlete. I got the impression they [Roughriders] didn’t want to tackle him.”
He moves well for a guy with that weight.
It was enough to suggest that Buono might consider a re-arrangement of the pecking order which sees Reilly as the third quarterback option, behind starter Travis Lulay and veteran backup Jarious Jackson. Not at this time, Buono suggested.

“At this point, somebody has to be No. 3,” he explained. “Every game that they play, they learn and get better from. The sad part is that you stop the growth. They [No. 3 QBs] don’t grow as fast and level off because the opportunities for growth [in games] aren’t there. He [Reilly] showed again the ability to be make a play, to be a good athlete and make some good decisions.”
Lots of depth at QB right now for the Lions. Lulay, Jackson, Reilly. Leonard on the PR.

Understanding that it was mostly against 2nd and 3rd stringers, you still had to be impressed with Reilly's performance against the Riders. He looked confident and certainly made the most of his limited playing time.

Buono must see something he liked about Leonard in training camp because he certainly didn't showed it last night.

I found Buono's choice of words amusing regarding QB development being an 'evolving door'. Some fans wonder if there is a silent r there at the front of his metaphor at times but this is often been due to injuries. If things work out the way I hope I won't have to see Reilly again until next preseason but not because I wouldn't feel comfortable with him leading the team.

Leonard reminds me of Travis, similar styles of play imho, Reily though, he could really be something as he has all the tools.

To me, this yrs' Qb situation shows why Wally B is a good coach, clearly there was an issue last season, so he was certain to keep JJ on top of Lulay with two Qb of the future types on the roster, so if Lulay does go down JJ steps in Reilly moves to the #2, if JJ goes down Reilly can start and we still have a good Qb prospect in Leonard.

Sometimes I think that is relative. True he's working against 2nd and 3rd stringer but he's also likely working with a similar mix. I think what is more important to the coaching staff than stats, completions and points is that the QB is making the right reads and decisions. It's important that if one of those 2nd and 3rd string defenders makes a mistake in his coverage assignment or lines up wrong that the young QB recognizes it and makes the correct decisions. I think that's the sort of things they look for more than whether the QB completes the pass.

I am not surprised that he'd see more to develop in Leonard despite Leonard showing them he is not at all ready to play in the CFL. Didn't think Leonard should be at all laughing though.

What does surprise is how poor Jarius Jackson showed and if the starter got dinged a bit and had to take a few series out next week it doesn't look like Jackson would be the one to help out as yet. Now Reilly did look hot. Not sure how everyone can keep saying it was against second and thirds. Sask had their DBs back there on the second TD drive. Reilly did some good things and I didn't think it looked like the Riders were playing bums.

I was impressed by Edmonton's quarterbacks last week versus Saskatchewan, (or is Marcus Crandell just a great coach?) including Ron Lancaster's released grandson Marc Mueller. Previously, I was surprised they had released Jared Zabransky, but Eric Tillman continues to amaze me with his eye for talent.

If Eric Ward or Matt Nichols should be released by Edmonton they've showed more than Corey Leonard, imo...

Re: Mike Reilly Shows His Stuff - Mike Beamish

From what we saw in both games I think we can honestly say that Jarius Jackson looked the least able to run the lions offence. Im not sure what Wallys long term plans are for Jarius Jackson [coaching?] but perhaps he should move along on them. Jarius Jackson is not getting any younger or its seems better so maybe the lions should save some cap space and move on. If Lulay goes down then Reilly or Leonard are the long term future as of now for this team..JJ is payed far to much to ride pine as a third stringer and as of now thats the way he has shown he clan play [if that]. If long term Wally plans on making JJ a quarterback coach he should do it now and move the future along

I think that he is wise to have at least one backup with experience just in case. I mean every team always is going to need a backup to come in at some point of the season. Somehow he'll have to get Reilly some playing time but for the moment I'd leave JJ where he is.

 I am wondering if Ray would beat out Leonard after yesterday's game against the Stamps. Leonard looked better against the same team, the Esks look to be relying upon the Hail Mary passes and only Joseph had success with it. Edmonton didn't even give Mueller a sniff, so I doubt that he has shown enough to find playing time unless injuries give him a chance.

That is Edmonton's new offense which really had them stretching the field. I do think too that KJ looked good as did Mueller.
