@pauser,
As QB you are either a starter or a backup. The starter's job is to go out and get it done. The back ups job is to be ready to go in, and be good teammate. Printers failed at both roles. WB would have risked losing the entire team if he has basically said "well, this guy is playing like crap, treating his teammates like crap, but he's a QB so we'll keep him around". WB could have kept Printers on the sideline as the #3, but as long as he was on the team he would be a divisive figure while Lulay and JJ would always feel like CP was lurking over their shoulders. There is a very good chance that CP would not have set foot on the field again in 2010, but what damage might he have done to the team from the sidelines?
I'm surprised at the move, but I can understand it. If WB is sending a message to the rest of the team that he believes in them, and that no one player is above the team, then I support WB in this move.

Re: Breaking News... Printers cut!
There can be lots of truth to the adage of "addition by subtraction". I was neither a staunch supporter of Printers nor a detractor. At the start of the season I put myself in the "I'm from Missouri" Camp. He had to show me he was capable of being BC's QB of the present and future. Other than an occasional play here and there he failed in that regard. His little blowup on Wilson at the end of the game may have been the final straw but there had to be more to the move than that. You don't make such moves at this stage of the season based on a single incident. My guess is there have been other problems within the locker room brewing since Lulay was given the starting job. I have no problem with the move.
It can be said that Lulay hasn't exactly been tearing up the league and in that regard hasn't been much more productive than Printers. However clearly while everybody has been hoping CP Version II in BC would play like a reasonable facsimile of CP Version I circa 2004 he really has proven to be not much different than the Hamilton Ti-Cat version. In that regard it becomes a very simple decision for Buono. If in his opinion the Printers we've seen in 2010 is as good as it's going to get, and there has been no evidence to indicate otherwise, then it's time to close the book on him and move on. Lulay at least shows to have upside and potential to continue to progress at the position. He is a better manager of the game. 2004 was 7 seasons ago. Printers has only regressed since then and I don't see any signs of him turning things around. I think Wally found himself at a point where he had to ask himself if Printers could ever return to form and lead this team and the answer became no. Lulay at least gives him a maybe.

Cant say I am anywhere near surprised. Maybe a little bit about how quick it happened, but after the wpg game, the writing was on the wall. Casey was well done. Through injury or otherwise, I never expected him to last the season.

Believe it or not, we haven't all been thinking the same thoughts. I believe the players are responsible for their actions on and off the field and have to be accountable. Coaches are responsible for holding players accountable. That's what happened in this case.The_Pauser wrote:This confirms what we've all been thinking: Wally has lost it.
Re: Breaking News... Printers cut!
I agree, that if it was only based upon the Winnipeg incident at the end of the game, it was not necessary. Printers could have been demoted to the third string spot and kept for depth. Its not as if other players in that game did not blow up at each other. Brown blistered his colleague defensvie tackle right on the football field. Printers was not the only one to come unglued and he didn't cost us penalties like Sanchez etc.The_Pauser wrote:This confirms what we've all been thinking: Wally has lost it.
What does cutting Casey accomplish? You know, I have no issues with his big blowup last game. I'd like to see more players get pissed off in that situation when the team pissed away a win in the 4th quarter. Casey, was not the problem with this team. I feel for the most part that he played well within the limitations of the crappy offense Chaps has employed.
Casey is merely a martyr in this case. The's a victim in this. He's been victimized by a brutal offensive system which hasn't made any QB look good (even Ricky Ray looked horrendous under Chapball), and victimized by Wally's stubbornness to make the necessary changes where it mattered. He looked great last year, and until Chap got to sink his teeth into him with a full training camp, Casey magic was back.
Ah well who are we kidding...until Wally steps down this team is crap anyways.
However, Printers was not in the same situation as many of his teammates. He was on a short rope after his two game fumble spree. He got an opportunity in Winnipeg, played well, and then threw the unfortunate interception. He should have just got off the field and not brought more attention to himself. I've been a huge Printers fan but it was dum to do what he did.

You can't throw your teammate under the bus like he did. I don't care if emotions got the best of him. Totally bush league. Wally must have had it, here he is thinking he's coaching a professional football team, and he has to deal with all these undisciplined babies. I wonder if Casey would have liked it if O'Neil Wilson would have yelled at him to the point where one of the Hamilton coaches had to break it up, after Casey fumbled away the game against the ti-cats?
Quite honestly, I was very disappointed with Casey's overall performance yesterday. On top of the team's choke job. I don't know if Lulay is the answer, but with him I get the sense there's more to be seen/untapped potential. I think Casey was pretty what you see is what you get. He's no longer the guy from 2004 (really the only time he's done anything in the CFL.)

Don't be surprised if the first pass Lulay throws on Saturday to Wilson.

I disagree that the coaches are holding players responsible here. Why is it that Jarome Messam can get away with punching out a veteran? Why is it that Davis Sanchez can get away with taking 40 yards worth of penalties in one play? Why is it that Khalif Mitchell can get away with a punch/ejection that brought Winnipeg back into field goal range when it looked like they were down and out? Why can Chap get away with such a vanilla offense? Why can Dorazio get away with coaching an offensive line that looks like would be beat by a high school team?B.C.FAN wrote:Believe it or not, we haven't all been thinking the same thoughts. Printers was pissed off with the result and so he should be! This team will be in complete turmoil until we get rid of the Wally regime. I personally think now that Wally lost his touch years ago in Calgary. The Stamps started to struggle and Wally got the boot. He came here and had success, but was surrounded by some of the greatest football minds in the CFL. Wally had Bobby Ackles, Bob O'Billovich and Dave Ritchie. As soon as Ackles passed, OB left and Ritchie retired, things went downhill immediately. Coincidence?

Flip Flop.
Brought back as a bit of a saviour. And to some it seemed like he might be. Wally might have thought that. It was a surprising decision to some. But Casey played well enough in his return in 2009 to rack up 3 or more 300 yard passing games.
Since his demotion this year, he seems more like the guy who didn't get to start in the Grey Cup in 2004.
I don't think he is a bad buy. And I don't dislike him as it seems quite a few fans do. But he does seem to have that side of him where his emotions don't help his cause.
.............
What was he doing in the game anyway? Lulay says he could still have played. Did Wally think the game was over? Was it a chance to get Casey going again? If Casey had saved the game, in baseball parlance, would that have meant Lulay was no guarantee to start the next game? Flip Flop.

Re: Breaking News... Printers cut!
On-field performance or lack thereof led to turning the starting keys over to Lulay. Perhaps there was off-field issues involved in that decision as well. After that I think things went downhill for CP. Was heDavid wrote:Obviously this had less to do with on-field performance. Either the shocking images of him slamming his helmet and berating Wilson caused this move and/or something more serious behind closed doors.
If it was performance, why wouldn't they just relegate him to #3 and move Jarious up the depth chart and keep Casey for insurance with the playoffs looming?
DH
Last week I heard a Fan590 interview with Chan Gailey about Buffalo's release of Trent Edwards. The interviewer was curious how Gailey could go from starter to being released in a matter of a couple of weeks. Further making it a curious move was the fact Edwards seems like a real likeable guy who doesn't pack the big ego. Gailey said they had to start with a pecking order in pre-season and opted for Edwards. Through the pre-season while he hadn't exactly taken the proverbial ball and run with it nobody else did either. So they started the season with Edwards but after 3 games determined that moving forward with him wasn't in the cards. They didn't see him as developing into their QB of the future. So they made the switch to Fitzpatrick. They figured if he struggled they were more likely to go to #3 Brohm that to go back to Edwards. Having made the determination they'd look beyond Edwards for their next QB they released him as a move that was better for the club and for the athlete.

The experiment didn't work, but it was worth a shot. I wasn't a huge fan of CP in his last go-around, but got back on the bandwagon late last year when he showed flashes of 04.His attitude seemed to have improved, but it didn't keep up when things got tough. The inspired play never emerged when things got tough either.
While some think he would be awesome with a different OC, we'll see how many OCs and coaches in this league will agree. My prediction is that NONE of the PROFESSIONAL football people in the CFL think he is worth another shot.
So back to the motivational speaking. Looks like he might have gotten a head start on that new career with Wilson the other day.

Based on what do you make that claim though? I never once saw him sulking on the sidelines because he was demoted. In fact, it was Jarious who was the one who spoke out to the media about not getting a chance to start. Casey remained positive and only blew up when the Lions pissed away a sure victory.WestCoastJoe wrote:Flip Flop.

Casey might have taken a lesson from Jarious Jackson in terms of managing your emotions, and not acting out in ways that hurt your career.
