half way thru bobby ackles book the 'water boy' and wondering if their is other books related to the lions as i am really enjoying this one learning about all things bc lions. any info would be much appreciated

It's been ages since I read that book; the quote I best remember from it describes the fidelity of married athletes: "500 miles from home, everyone is single".

I also read "Dirty 30" years ago. Jim Young was a neighbour of mine in Coquitlam, and before I knew that the calm, placid man who lived two doors from me was THE Jim Young, I chuckled at the part of his book that described how to administer the purrfect clothesline hit.

A couple other Lions books that I'm familiar with:

"Thrown to the Lions," by John Wirtanen (I have the 2000 edition which chronicled the teams first 45 years, but I understand an updated/revised volume came out last year. This is one of the best, if not the best CFL team history book out there).

"Countdown to Grey Cup," by Dick Beddoes and Dave Skrien (this one revolves around the 1964 Grey Cup season. The text is a little dry, but there are some great photos included showing old uniforms from that time period).

Old issues of the B.C. Lions CFL Illustrated game program/magazines from 1970-1990's are another excellent source of reading material and include a wealth of photos. I see this stuff on ebay frequently.

When I was 15 read a book called the Plastic Orgasm (IIRC). The book was written by Lavern(?) Barnes, then wife of Emery Barnes (Member of 64 Champion Team). I don't remember a lot about the book but what I do remember its as much about being part of the inner circle (wifes, family) but not the actual team. She chronicles some of the wild parties the Lions threw after winning their first Grey Cup. How in those days (according to her anyway) things like benzodiapenes were readily available to help you play.
It's a darker book.

I definately prefer all the other ones but I might reread this one (the Plastic Orgasm) because maybe I'd get more out of it now that I have aged some.

I would also recommend "Goin' Deep - The Life and Times of a CFL Quarterback" - by former Lion, Matt Dunigan. Matt talks about his journey through the CFL which included two years (1988-1989) in B.C.

I've been adding to the list of CFL books on bclionsden.ca in the Lions/CFL History section. Do any of you know of any Lions books that we've missed? I seem to recall there being an "Empire Stadium Scrapbook" the Vancouver Sun published when they tore the stadium down, but can't find any information on it.
