Thoughts on Ex-Lions winning the Grey Cup

Don't really care, and don't understand people that do. I found it pathetic, for example, when Ray Bourque brought the Stanley Cup back to Boston - the cup he won as a member of the Avalanche. Not so much for Ray, but for the fans who cheered him on at personal appearances.

Bruins fans quietly being happy for Bourque - understandable.

Cheering him like a returning hero - sad moment for an historical franchise.

Milt won't leave Winnipeg because if he wanted to win he would have left by now. However if he was traded he would be one of if not the only player in the CFL to be cheered on by their old team fans and most all CFL fans.

Certainly not the same as seeing Wayne Gretzky re-entering the then-Northlands Coliseum in October 1988.

i remember back in the day when damn near every player played for every team at at least some point in their careers.....this wouldnt have been much of a topic back then lol. my buddies dad played for to, montreal, winnepeg, edmonton, calgary and ottawa. Then they moved to BC....guess they got sick of every other city lol.

Hey, I comment all aspects of the Lions. And if I think there are certain aspects of the Lions that are underrepresented such as the Felions and the 2000 Grey Cup, then I'll bring it up.

Since Dave Dickenson was a fan favourite during his five years as Lion despite his many injuries, were any of very happy that he managed to win another Grey Cup ring to finish his fine career, despite the fact that it came at the expense of the Lions?

There's no doubt that he will be enshrined in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.

Where there is doubt though, is whether CFL and Dickenson fans will associate him more as a Lion or as a Stampeder. There's many various ranging from tenure, success, and awards.

As a Stampeder:
Grey Cup rings - 2 (as a backup) out of 3 appearance
MOP - 1
Years with team - 5

As a Lion:
Grey Cup rings - 1 (with MVP honours) out of 2 appears
MOP - 0 (but 1 as runner-up)
Years with team - 5

It's tough in some cases associate which team to associate a hall of famer with if they played in multiple teams. In some cases, it's easy like Cam Neely associating with the Bruins over the Canucks. But in the case of Doug Flutie, as a Stampeder he won 3 MOP but 1 GC in 4 seasons, while as a Argonaut he got 2 MOP and 2 GC in only 2 seasons. In the case of Patrick Roy, he won Stanley Cups, 2 as a Canadien and 2 as an Avalanche, but that big argument with the Canadiens management in December 1995 really soured the relationship. But despite all that, both teams retired his #33. And I mentioned above that both Bruins and Avalanche retired Bourque's #77.

Here is a trivia question that I do not know. Does anybody know?

Maybe I'm in the wrong forum, but considering we discussed the NHL earlier in this thread and how I don't like to open duplicate threads, I think this posting on this thread is rather appropriate.

Are you very proud that longtime, favourite Matt Cooke gets the hoist the Stanley Cup?

I'm sure most fans would have been very glad if Markus Naslund or Trevor Linden got to win the championship, the same way the aforementioned Bruins fans were really proud about Ray Bourque. I believe Matt Cooke wasn't too far away in terms of his popularity. He was considered very hard working and very pesky who aggratated the opponent. And perhaps he was best remembered for scoring the game tying goal with less than 5 seconds in game 7 of the 2004 first round series against Calgary.

When deciding which team to root for in the 2009 Grey Cup, will you have an affinity towards ex-Lions?

I'm not aware of any ex-Lions on the Alouettes roster, but there's an obvious popular ex-Lion on the Roughriders roster: Jason Clermont.

So will you root for the Roughriders in hopes that the former Lion who was a rookie of the year and a two time most outstanding Canadian wins another Grey Cup ring?
