Well, I can't speak for others on here but for my part it's not so much griping as ridicule (there's a difference between "Man, look at how easily they get all worked up over winning the first round :lol:", and "HOW DARE they cheer like that :x"). Leaf fans have been mocked for similar premature displays, so to give this town a free ride would just be silly. These people (in both cities) are probably the same folks responsible for putting up Xmas decorations in the malls before the Halloween pumpkins are carved.

Anyway, have at it, Canuckleheads -- party like it's 1994, but whatever the outcome, keep the rioting in check this time...

the main problem i find is everyone i talk to thinks the cfl is "bush league" or a joke. if the bc lions played in the nfl i believe things would be different.
when the lions won the cup me and a buddy hopped in my truck and honked the horn and screamed in celebration only to realize there was no one else doing this or anyone who cared

Yes, it's the first round, but the first round is the equivalent of the Lions getting to the Western Final, and Lions fans get pretty excited about that, so let the Canuck fans have their fun.

Barely half the teams make the NHL playoffs and half of those are eliminated in the first round. So if you are a first round winner as the Canucks are, you are in the top quarter of your league. That's pretty good. If you do that in the CFL, where are you?

Just making the playoffs in a 30-team league is no small feat.

Making the playoffs in an 8-team league means you just have to NOT be the worst one in your conference.

Being born into a family of Canuck STH (at one point, six aunts/uncles/cousins), and seeing family dinners being re-scheduled to accomodate Canucks hockey, makes you a Canuck fan by default. That's not to say I'm any less of a Lions fan, as my parents had season tickets in the high rent district from before I was born up until 1992.

The Canucks history of mediocrity and questionable goaltending has been well-documented and beaten better than most government mules. Needless to say, when Luongo put this team on his back and carried them to the Northwest Division crown, people were definitely geeked up. Then, to see him carry this team past Dallas, was unbelievable. Unfortunately, for us Canuck fans, the only thing Roberto couldn't do was score goals.

The Western Conference is getting so competitive, 100pts would've put you in the 8th and final playoff position, and a date with the Detroit Red Wings in the 1st round. On the flipside, 100pts in the Eastern Conference would've won you the Southeast Division (and the 3rd seed) or in 6th, facing the winner of Southeast Division.

Sure, I got geeked up when the Canucks got by Dallas, but realized after Detroit had beaten Calgary, that the Canucks run was probably gonna end in Rd 2.

Having said all that, the Canucks had an unbelievable year, only to face a clearly superior team in the 2nd round. Now, it's time to turn everyone's attention to the Giants until the Lions start up..........

I'll admit, I never really followed hockey until 1994, but living only a few blocks down Hastings from the Coliseum and having a neighbor who was huge into the Canucks, it was pretty hard NOT to get into it and jump on the bandwagon...

And I've been pretty much driving the damn thing ever since. Even through the infamous M*ssier years, possibly the darkest time in Canucks history, I'd watch every game I could, always hopeful of seeing a spark, of seeing something click.

It's frustrating, and it's disappointing, to see the season end this way after the great turnaround mid-season, and I'm gonna be grumpy about it for a while, but I also know that this is an incredible kick-off to next season: we now have a goaltender who is not only skilled, but DURABLE (yes, I've long been a Cloutier apologist - when he was healthy, he played great, but he proved to also be fragile); we have a good coach who seems to handle his players well and doesn't talk to the media and fans like we're children; we have a good solid defensive system that gave us the #1 PK in the league for the season, despite an abyssmal start; and we've got some great prospects in the system as well as having a really deep D core (when they're healthy).

We also have a GM who in only his second year has organized a pretty damn good team... and really, it's only the first year with most of the current lineup. He can be forgiven last year: trying to keep the old core together was certainly worth a shot, as they'd made some real magic in the past, but alas that wasn't to be... and he made a lot of the changes that were necessary, including some that weren't too popular with the fans and probably weren't very popular with some of the team. He's had a couple of brain farts, but for the most part I'd say Nonis has done well by this team so far: Mitchell, Bieksa, Smolinski, Cowan, Hansen... and oh yeah, there's that goalie guy he got us too.

Now if he can find us some scoring firepower for next season, the Canucks will be a serious force to be reckoned with.

Meantime, I'm off to the Giants' WHL Finals games next Tues/Wed., and then I'll be looking forward to a little football and maybe even a GC repeat Now that a buddy of mine is on a 6-month job in Edmonton, I may even make a road trip to join him for a game when the Leos visit there (yeah, he's from here originally, he's a Lions fan too).

Soundy, I think your analysis is pretty solid, and I agree with most of it. Here's the only caveat I would toss in -- finding that scoring firepower you quite rightly identify as a need is far easier said than done. Those guys are incredibly difficult to find, and even modest scorers are going to be commanding big bucks on the free agent market. Due to the millstone around their necks in the form of Naslund's contract, the Canucks have very little flexibility in free agency this summer. Even mid-range guys can be a gamble -- just look at how Montreal crapped out with Samsonov, a guy who most people, myself included, thought would be a good pick-up for them.

Really, I think the only way you find offense is to draft it and develop it on your own...

Hockey proved to be so popular that it was exported north to Los Angeles where it thrived in the colder climate, and other places...like San Jose and, apparently, later even canada.
