If the Redblacks don't screw up a field goal try, this defense gives up a grand total of two Field Goals and loses the game.

Again, they had two weeks to prepare for a match up against a 1-8 expansion team and they put up all of 7 points. 7.

The discipline problems continue. Major fouls. No End penalties. A time count call. Failure to call a time out on the fake punt. The need to take a time out on 3rd and 1. Starting the game by taking the ball at the 35 after the opening field goal, rather than letting the best returner in the league get his hands on the ball.

If our back seven doesn't play absolutely over their heads, week in and week out, this team is sunk. And they're doing it with no help. No help from the offensive line. No help from the coaching staff. A lack of execution at critical positions on Special Teams. Not much help from the front four defensively.

And, as a special bonus, you've lost Travis, quite possibly for good.

I haven't seen someone win something that was less deserving since the 2000 US election.

Have you seen enough yet?

Along with posts from Blitz and Joe, this is the post of the season thus far, it encapsulates everything I would say...the coaching on this team, with the talent we have is criminal...across the board...Lions VERY LUCKY to win tonight as OTT outplayed us...Lulay injury isn't good as there is always damage to the joint when it pops out or goes back in. Jones is in way over his head, but that could be said of Benevides on down!

That looked more than a popped shoulder, way too much pain for that. At any rate, after having shoulder surgery, don't you think that any injury sustained to that shoulder will take a while before they consider to let him play again. I suspect another year, and at 32 is it worth it to Lulay to rehab to that point with the potential of the shoulder giving out yet again?

Sorry people, in my mind Lulay is likely to call it a career.

Even the CFL itself admits tonight's game had no highlights:

Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

Very sad. Very sad.

As I mentioned earlier, Lulay was just starting to look like Lulay of 2011. Elusive. Fast. Beautiful shot to Manny. If he plays like that, the entire scenario changes for this team.

And now?

Some of us have been questioning, and feeling guilty. But how much evidence do we need? As great a guy as he seems to be, does Benny get his team focused? Does he have the Xs and Os expertise to lead a team? Or is he dependent on the expertise of his OC and DC? And our guys, chosen by Benny, when he jettisoned the very experienced JC and Stubes, show their struggles on the learning curve. Football, more than any sport I know, reflects the Head Coach. The team on the field is an extension of the HC. And what are we? Not sharp. Not focused. Not determined. Not disciplined. We're just out there, slopping around. Some stand out, of course. With their individual fire. Elimimian. Lulay. Harris prior to his injury.

Is this going to change? Not likely.

If Lulay had stayed healthy, anything was possible. I don't know about his injury. But it might be some kind of miracle if he was to play again this year.

And yet we beat Calgary. Well we do have talent. And the players have pride. And sometimes players can figure things out.

But it don't look good. We should have lost. Fumble at the goal line. Missed FG with the ball as slippery as soap. Lightning one minute earlier, and Ottawa comes out of the dressing room to nail it. Seems like the football Gods were not going to deny Travis the victory.

LOL!!!

I wonder where 12 points fits in the overall pecking order of "lowest combined score" involving the Lions? I did manage to find an 8 point game - 7-1 victory over Winnipeg on October 21, 1970 (ironically they had the worst defense in the league that year, giving up 24 points a game). But other than that, I'm stumped.

For you trivia fans, Henry Burris has yet to throw a touchdown at home this year. Mind you he hasn't thrown too many on the road either.

Great points, WCJ. Not to pile on the head coach but I just don't have a lot of faith in his decision making. He comes on the post-game show tonight all jacked up, praising his team like everything's lollipops and rainbows. Yea, his D balled out tonight and we should all be proud of that effort. But we took stupid penalties, drive after drive bogged down, Husband and Brandon were getting turnstiled, guys often didn't know if they were supposed to be out on the field, we were burning time-outs that we may have needed down the stretch....

Then there's his in-game decision making. Benevides - for the first time I can recall for a HC - elects to have Ottawa re-do a shanked punt that would have 'gifted us' field position on the 33 yard line, which we instead scrimmage on the 18 following the re-kick. Then late in the game, he nearly had Schmitt punt instead of going for the half-yard. A punt and decent return could really have given Ottawa good field position late in the game. Thankfully, saner heads talked him into going for it on 3rd down (after burning a timeout), which we made rather easily. Yeesh.

I think I was at that 1970 game. Fans who complain about the Lions' play this season don't remember the late 1960s or early '70s. I don't remember the mid-1950s but the team's alltime record for fewest combined points (4) was set Aug. 31, 1956 in a 3-1 loss in Winnipeg, according to the team records posted on bclions.com.

In Smilin' Hank's defense, if tonight was reflective of the Red Blacks' season, it's hard to throw TD passes when your receivers don't even look like they can catch a cold! :dizzy:

As much as Smiling Hank's play has been bad this year, his receivers have been dropping balls all season long. Today was no exception

^^This post pretty much sums up my feelings. I have tried to refrain from dumping on the HC but he is making a growing number of questionable calls and statements.

All the penalties are an indication of being out played and this often means out coached as well.

Jones' play calling is starting to make me long for Chaps.

Ok, so the O line can't open any holes or pass block, then try some screen passes, roll out the QB and stretch the D by throwing long.

Opposing team lines up for a FG, then spreads out for an obvious not-FG.

TIMEOUT?! Benny? Brown? Bueller?

QB and O-line fake a sneak from 4.5 yards and the Lions bite.

Where is the preparation, Mark Washington & Chuck McMann? 2 weeks!
