Interesting that Evans wants to coach. Guys who are backup QBs for most of their career are like coaches in training. Observing from the sidelines and being privy to the play calling is great preparation for coaching. Current prominent examples of backup QB to successful HC in a short period of time are Jason Maas and Ryan Dinwiddie. Jarious Jackson is another guy who has gone from mostly career backup QB to the coaching ranks.

So, I'm saying Dane Evans could have a good shot at a coaching career.

Not to mention Scott Milanovich, And John Hufnagel, who was a starter from time to time but never for an extended period. But possibly one of the best backups ever.

Dane also had the opportunity to grow up in a coaching environment with his father in the business as did a number of other QB's including Buck Pierce and Dakota Prukop. Reading that he also spent 2020 helping out with the University of Tulsa so it may be that there is something in the works there. Absolutely wish him the best.

Wish him the very best. Was a good team guy and a decent QB as well.

Look at the list of former CFL QBs who had short CFL careers but went on to be head coaches in the NFL and NCAA in recent years: Sean Peyton, Zac Taylor, Jason Garrett, Kliff Kingsbury, Mike McCoy in the NFL. Steve Sarkisian came with a win of advancing to the BCS Championship yesterday. I'm probably missing a few more.

Good for him for knowing what he wants and going for it.

Given the state of quarterbacking around the league, he likely could have gotten a decent incentive-based contract with a great chance of winning a starter job. It is definitely a loss for the league.

He had plenty of CFL opportunity with mixed results.

Not sure he is some big loss for the league though? Given the impressive play of some young CFL QBs lately - like Crum & Powell coming out of nowhere to play very well at times last year, plus the success of Chad Kelly (wins galore and top passing stats, as a first year starter !!!) or young guys like Tre Ford or Dru Brown, and IMO the state of CFL QBing is not as bad as some make out.

"Experienced QBs" like Evans or Dom Davis or Arbuckle or Shiltz kept around for the sake of it is one thing; but IMO some teams might be more open to giving young QBs more opportunity rather than sticking with proven average or mediocre QB talents. Always some good NCAA QB talents to be signed; and the success of Ford should IMO open some myopic CFL eyes to the possibility of top U Sports QB talents getting serious looks - Senecal (Carabins) ,Desjardins (Laval) , Hillock (Western)- as a few examples - could rate real CFL looks soon.

Hopefully football hasn't seen the last of the likes of Dane Evans in possibly a coaching career. He comes across as a really decent human being and team mate.


It is not surprising to me that he chose retirement given how tough it's been for him these past few years, injuries included.

I kind of see him as a QB that needed the right stability and OC for success something that seemed lacking during his time with Ticats.
Also not getting the level of consistency you need to stick in pro levels.

Dane Evans proved to be a solid addition to the Lions’ strong quarterback room as he appeared in 16 regular season contests and completed 71 passes for 829 yards and six touchdowns against four interceptions. Coming off the bench in relief of the injured Vernon Adams Jr., Evans led the Lions to a pair of victories on July 22 against Saskatchewan and again on July 29 in Edmonton. He was pressed into service once again in the final minute of his return to Hamilton on October 13, completing all four pass attempts for 42 yards to set up Sean Whyte’s winning field goal with no time on the clock.
