2030 Winter Olympics - Vancouver's Bid

Along with announcing the new BC Premier, the NDP also announced that it won't support 2030 Winter Olympics bid. Certainly a big blow to Vancouver's bid.

Given the level of risk and the global turbulence from climate/weather to war to pandemics to costs (esp security), it's pretty tough to come up with a business case that the hosting and downstream benefits will pay for this.

20 years after the last games? Seems too soon if you ask me and if things were expensive then, just how expensive would they be now? There was some good repurposing of some olympic facilities from 2010 but the costs were huge. There were scandals about shoddy construction and also lots of facilities that basically went to pot afterwards (ski jumps etc). I can't help but think there are better uses for that kind of money right now. Saying not interested on the part of government shouldn't come with the "anti reconciliation" label either.

The 2010 Games were great and there was a festival atmosphere throughout the city. I couldn’t find any reason to get excited about 2030 though. Once was enough.

If we weren't facing so much global turbulence in so many areas, it might be something to get excited about.

EXCEPT the costs are constantly going crazy and the benefits really elusive in this age of who knows what's next.

But maybe it's time to start focusing on the things we have now and make them become exciting.
