Was just enjoying the game's video highlight package and noticed during Rainey's stellar kick return, right around the 35 yard line, as he's attempting to escort Rainey home, David Menard (#78) goes down like a ton and lies there neither looking up nor moving. As I replayed that bit It appears he suddenly grabs at his knee or his hamstring on the way down.

I don't recall mention of his injury by the telecast crew, so perhaps it wasn't as significant as it looks in that moment on film -- or perhaps the commentators just missed it. In any case, has anyone heard any murmuring since the weekend regards game casualties? Menard would be a noteworthy loss for sure! (backing up Lemon on the line and always motoring on special teams). I'd be very sorry to hear it was serious.
Menard appeared to pull a hamstring. He didn't play afterwards, and was limping badly as he made his way to the locker room at halftime. I haven't heard anything since. The team returns to practice at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, so we should hear more soon afterwards.

Mark Washington doing an outstanding job ! One of the better DC in the league.
Amazing how much better DCs look when they can get pressure by only rushing four than when they can't, eh?
Isn't that always the case ? What DC looks good when they can't get pressure ? When a defense is terrible the DC gets the blame , so why is not the flip applied too ? When a defense plays great it's not the players calling the plays.
Stubler rushed three between the 20s constantly, then tightened up the pressure using blitz once you got to the red zone. It's earned him a paycheck for a long time.

Don Matthews' later year Montreal defenses constantly rushed seven and played man on the back end.

Just to give you two examples of guys who didn't rely on pressure with the front four.

Menard's injury sure looked serious at the time. He was flat-out on the field a long time and hobbled off (without assistance) VERY slowly. At half-time, he was the last player into the dressing room as he basically walking on one leg towards the locker room. One of the guys in the motorized cart came by seemingly to ask him if he wanted a ride and Menard waved him off. It looked like Menard was mightily pissed off and disgusted that the injury happened. I hope it was just a pulled hamstring, but would not be surprised if it was worse. As you say, he has been an important "motor" this year!

Duke Williams wasn't penalized for running over Garry Peters on the last play of the third quarter (the play resulted in a 29-yard reception by Nate Behar) but Williams has been fined by the league for the illegal hit.

I don't know if Stubler invented the "bend but don't break" scheme but he certainly lived and in the case of the 2013 WSF died by it.

The league got it right. Admittedly I was blind to that "blow to the head" aspect of Duke's actions back when the clip first came to my attention. But upon my viewing it again now the illegal aspect of the action has come perfectly clear to me too. Yup. No matter what the circumstance, no matter what triggers such action, a blow to the head and/or leading with the helmet should be called in every instance. Mea culpa.

There was no hit to the head in the clips on my Mac.

The main hit was from Williams hands. I'm all for fines for head shots but this one is a head scratcher. It seems that he reached out with his arms and put him on his back - schooling him and making him a viral hit for those who talk but can't back it up. Sure looks like a legal hit.

Toppy, as far as I know, a pass defender is entitled to his space. Peters got run over on a pass play. He is ready to back pedal. As I noted earlier, in basketball, a defender is entitled to his space also.

Both guys were woofing. Williams is as big a woofer as any guy in the league. He ran him over. Should have been a penalty.

American sports media coverage? They like to laugh at anything that is not the NFL or an American sport. I give them no credence for mocking Peters. Peters is in pass coverage. Williams is supposed to run by him. When 230 pound Williams runs right into him, Peters is caught off guard, ready to back pedal. Of course he will be knocked over.

Peters got run over, illegally, in a surprise move by Williams. Peters did not get out played on that one. Schooled in a sneaky street sense? Yes. But not in a legal football play. If Williams wants to run over a stationary DB, the DB will hit the ground.

Just IMO ...
John Madden's Team Policies: Be on time. Pay attention. Play like hell on game day.

Jimmy Johnson's Game Keys: Protect the ball. Make plays.

Walter Payton's Advice to Kids: Play hard. Play fair. Have fun.

Not sure running a player is a fine but WCJ you are right - you can't run over a DEF player just for the sake of it.

I just don't see a head shot in the clips I've seen.

3down:
"Williams has been fined for delivering a blow to the head of Peters according to the league."
His hit with his arms extended like that is a legal way to block and it doesn't appear there was a head shot here - although here he was running him over.

Given how Williams laid on the hit the only thing that might have got bruised is the DBs ego.

If Williams is fined why nothing for Anthony Cioffi versus Williams???

Recent decisions show CFL is more interested in Twitter justice than player safety
Posted on October 26, 2018 by Josh Smith
Now the hit by Anthony Cioffi of the RBs was a brutal freaking head shot to Luke Tasker - yet nada, zip, nothing, SFA - no fine- other than it was flagged for roughing!!
Reaction afterwards was universal in condemning the hit, with most thinking Cioffi would be fined and some even going as far as to say a suspension was warranted.
The hit is in the story on 3Down - both are actually.

On the Williams hit:
What was it about this hit that made the CFL levy a fine? Was it because the clip went viral, was picked up by Barstool Sports and former ESPN personality Jemele Hill? Was Williams fined because Peters’ pride was wounded after bringing a proverbial knife to a gun fight? Because it sure seems like the league is out here dispensing Twitter justice as opposed to fining guys for much more deliberate and vile hits..

The viral video appears to have been taken from a mobile phone at an angle to the TV screen. I just watched my copy of the original TSN broadcast. At the 2:17:30 mark, Williams lowers his head and targets the crown of Peters' helmet. It definitely warranted a fine, if not a suspension. Peters was lucky not to have been injured.

It was a head shot . Even that viral video shows helmet to helmet contact . Hard to see at full speed on the grainy video , but if you pause it you can move it back and forth . Then it is clearly seen at the 8 second mark. Gary Peters got the last laugh as Williams had a pretty mediocre game and lost , nearly being eliminated from the play offs . IMO that could also be called defensive PI since you knock the DB down then receiver is open . More blatant the a pick play. A cheap shot by a guy whose team was being out played and losing .
