Don't have any stats but you are probably right. A lot of the most expensive sports franchises are NFL ones. IIRC, at least one (or more?) are worth more than a billion buckaroos. What I like is a kinda tongue in cheek quote from Roger Goodell about how the NFL actually acts in kinda of a socialist manner in some ways. There IS NO WAY (no offence, South Pender) that the Green Bay Packers would exist without some of special setups the NFL has (TV revenue sharing etc...). IMO, (yours too, I'm betting) the NFL is better off with Green Bay in the league. It's still kinda funny to me how a league that used to have two franchises in one of its largest markets (Los Angeles) now has not had any for years. I'll bet there would be a lot of money to be made having an LA franchise back in the NFL.

It appears that the international stage (Mexico, Canada and Western Europe) are three areas the NFL truly hopes to grow its product. I spent twelve days in Japan in 2010 and it was hard to keep up on CFL and NFL goings on (this site booted me out when I tried to log in from a hotel in Tokyo  ). IIRC, a Saturday evening NFL game would work out to being shown live Sunday afternoon in Tokyo.

Well, a month from now I'll be able to come home, warm up a pot of chili and settle into another season of Monday Night Football. Haven't checked out the schedule just yet but I have no doubt there will be some classics........(at least in theory)

NFL has an office in Beijing and was running football camps for kids at a park right near the main CBD. MLB and NBA are there.

Eng. Prem League is big in this region. Man City, Man U, Tottenham and Sunderland have all been to Hong Kong this past month. Man City Chief Commericial Officer Tom Glick told me of a very big sponsor signing here.

At the Man United vs. a local Chinese team the number of Man U shirts in the audience of some 40,000 at Hong Kong Stadium made it look like a Man U's home game.

CFL needs first to market in our local communities and get more businesses on board- ethnic, sports, etc, wherever there are people and dollars. Segment the market and bring in the fans.

Yeah, the NFL is way in front of all other team sports leagues in revenues.

An interesting table I saw recently (but which I cannot reproduce on this forum because the numbers just get run together) showed the following six leagues and annual revenues:

NFL - $11.0 Billion
MLB - 7.0 Billion
NBA - 5.0 Billion
NHL - 3.3 Billion
Major league soccer - .3 Billion
CFL - .1 Billion

So, the NFL earns 110 times what the CFL does.

English Premiership revenues €2.479 billion in 2009–10 (courtesy Wikipedia)

So that translates into about 5 billion in N.A. dollars, I think. The Wikipedia entry claims that the English Premiership is consistently ranked fourth in the world of sports league revenues after the NFL, MLB and NBA.

So no question money wise the NFL is the most successful pro sports league. IMO, the NFL is VERY successful in lots of other ways too. For e.g. it seems to avoid some of the scandals that have plagued MLB and the NBA. Not because the NFL doesn't have those scandals, they just don't seem to get the same kind of coverage. I also think the NFL does a better job of seeming to handle them even though, IMO, the NFL's scandals are just as bad, if not worse than other leagues.

I do think the CFL has some strengths too and we just have to play up to those strengths. For eg the history of our game has always amazed me. The 100th Grey Cup was just played and IIRC, Superbowl 46 is the next one. I'm not going to try and do yet another apples/oranges comparision. I love both leagues and hope they both continue to be successful. I will admit though, I worry sometimes that my favourite smaller league may end up as roadkill sometime down the road. Thankfully, I do think future generations of fans will continue to keep the CFL going.

A different cut is to look at the clubs and you see that there are the rich and less rich in all leagues (not CFL):

Forbes top 50 clubs in the world:
http://www.forbes.com/pictures/mli45ikd ... yankees-2/

"Manchester United has a host of lucrative sponsorships in place. Insurer Aon pays $31 million a year to put its name on the team’s jerseys in a deal that runs through 2014. Last year, DHL Express inked a four-year deal with the club worth a reported $62 million to sponsor Manchester United’s practice jerseys. It is the first case of a practice jersey sponsorship deal for soccer in the U.K. Nike manages the team’s merchandise sales and the agreement is worth a minimum of $39 million annually for Manchester United based on overall sales in a deal through 2015."

The List:

#1 Manchester United ($2.23 billion)

#2 Real Madrid ($1.88 billion)

#3 New York Yankees ($1.85 billion)

#3 Dallas Cowboys ($1.85 billion)

#5 Washington Redskins ($1.56 billion)

#6 Los Angeles Dodgers ($1.4 billion)

#6 New England Patriots ($1.4 billion)

#8 Barcelona ($1.31 billion)

#9 New York Giants ($1.3 billion)

#10 Arsenal ($1.29 billion)

A little Tuesday morning Pro Football Talk to feed our habit:

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/ca ... umor-mill/

Here's a quote from RG3 that I got a chuckle from. Evidently, Donovan McNabb offered to counsel RG3 on how to make it in the NFL and conduct himself off the field.

"I don’t think Donovan is an idiot by any means,” he told me. “But right now, it’s probably best we don’t talk.”

That's interesting, TV. Somewhere I'd read that the Cowboys' value had gone over $2B a while back, and ran across the following listing of just the various NFL teams (it's possible some different valuation methods were used in the two lists):

http://www.forbes.com/nfl-valuations/list/

Our Seahawks are way down in 17th place, worth a measly $1B.

Perhaps someone on the forum with a better understanding of business than I have (TV?) can glean a lot more from some of the figures in the list than just the net worth. Things like Debt/Value (%) and Operating Income are beyond my ken, but may be interesting to those who understand them.

Interesting piece on the Seahawks' Bruce Irvin:

http://blog.seattlepi.com/football/2013 ... uce-irvin/

Sports Illustrated is touting him as the next Von Miller (Broncos)--or premier pass-rusher. He's young (26), 6-3, 245 lbs., and has done a 4.5 40. Like Miller, Pete Carroll has made him into a hybrid LB/DE, or, you could say, QB-rushing specialist. The 'Hawks' defense should be very very good this season, with a great LB group and secondary, and now with another pass-rush specialist, Cliff Avril (27 yrs. old, 6-3, 260, also 4.5 speed, picked up from Detroit where he was very effective), coming at QBs from the other side. And this is ignoring two very good DEs, Chris Clemons and the newly-acquired Michael Bennett.

Strengthening the D-line was a priority for Pete Carroll in the off-season, and he's really done a good job of bringing in free agents and solid draft picks to solidify a line that already has guys like Red Bryant, and run-stoppers Tony McDaniel, and Brandon Mebane (along with the recovering sack-specialist, DE Chris Clemons, who should be good to go at some point probably early in the season). They would seem to now have all three defensive position groups extremely well staffed.

Bunch of games on tonight on the NFL network.

Really liked seeing the Eagles new ChipKellyish uptempo offence. Looked good the one series I saw of it. That was a replay of the Patriots/Eagles game last week.

Due to my schedule I've missed a lot of the Total Access this week that helps one stay on top of all things NFL. One comment that was made was how much the Patriots recieving crew has turned over this year and the announcer seemed to avoid mentioning Hernandez....

Going to have to try to taking in this weeks Bears preseason game. Just to see how Trestmans efforts are payiing off on the field, so far.

At this time, Trestman is about the extent of my interest in the NFL. Some interest in Brady and Belichick, Aaron Rodgers. Pete Carroll. Russell Wilson. OK Kaepernick. Little bits here and there. We don't even know if Trestman will translate well to the NFL.

Good time for South Pender to take over the NFL thread.

Flipped on the TV and the Bears game is on now. Making easy work of the Chargers until halftime anyways. Unfortunately had a few phone calls to make so had the sound off. Lots of coverage of Trestman as HeadCoach with him hoisting the Grey Cup etc...

Forgot to post about this yesterday, had me chuckling.....

http://ftw.usatoday.com/2013/08/donovan ... ainwashed/

Donovan McNabb thinks RG3 is being 'brainwashed' and has offered to help mentor. RG3 has said 'thanks, but no thanks'. Really has me chuckling as I don't know why McNabb would go public (assumming he did). You offered and he declined. Maybe I'm missing something here but IMO, RG3 seems wise beyond his years in how hes handled most of the off field stuff he's come into. That being said, he has a little work to do on the on-field stuff but its probably just the competitive fire in him....

McNabb has done some 'outside the box' things that didn't turn out to well IMO, but did turn out well according to him. For e.g. Loudly advicating for T.O. when he appeared to be reciever nongrata in many NFL circles. Admitedly these two did play on a Superbowl team together but even Donovan would admit, I'm betting, that it went downhill fast from there.

The NFL schedule for preseason games is puzzling at times. Still showing some games from last week. Haven't shown some games from this week. The Broncos/Seahawks game is on from Seattle tomorrow night. I might catch some of the tail end of the game but I doubt it. Got a barnburner of a home CFL game to attend instead. Maybe the place we go for a snack afterwards will have the Hawks on.......

Seen two Dolphins preseason games so far. Only comment? New logo
