Re: Eskimos 33 - Lions 17 Post Game Stats and Comments

Lions got blown out. This would not have happened if Rammer didn't post his poll about Lions and Sask ending up 0-3. :ref: I am blowing the whistle on Rammer's into-the-future polls.

Edit: It's not Training Camp, or Pre-Season. It's Week 3 of the regular season now. So how come the Lions are still playing like it? Getting tired of these poor efforts from the offence and defense...and the penalties. :dizzy:

Ouch, if I only had that much power, it would be a poll on how long the Lions keep an OC.

Re: Eskimos 33 - Lions 17 Post Game Stats and Comments

An organization in disarray. Living in the past. Not adjusting to changing times. Overly loyal to assistants with at best ordinary ability, at worst, in way over their heads.

Hard to find anything good to take out of this game.

Harris ran well when given the chance late in the game. :bang:

Foster is a keeper.

Pass protection OK.
.................

Defence is like Swiss cheese. I give the front 7 props for playing their guts out with no depth, no backup D tackle. :dizzy: No backup D tackle in a 3 - 4. LOL

Offence is ... what's that word? Oh yeah, "predictable."

No running game in the first half, although it seems the running backs can run the ball. And, given timing, and play design the O Line can block.

Outcoached badly once again.

Downhill since 2008, just about the time Kent Austin, Marc Trestman and John Hufnagel raised the bar on coaching in the CFL.

Oline was very poor and how is Newan going to call out the coaching staff when he got killed all game. Both takles also seemed to have a bad game. Don`t blame Lulay, if you watch both picks he had guys right in his face.

d1player - Lets be honest Lulay was awful today. The lineman on both sides were pretty good, on average.

Re: Eskimos 33 - Lions 17 Post Game Stats and Comments

The good news in this is that the Eskimos are looking like the number one team in the west and could challenge Montreal if they play like this each week.

Lucky Damon Duval missed a couple of FGs or this was a blow out.

Eric Tillman rejuvenated that entire organization and his choices in players and coaches so far is looking like Kent Austin all over again.

8 runs for 56 yards.

Harris - 4/26 with 12 yards coming on the draw play to end the half.

Robertson 3/27.

Lulay 1/3.

Esk Messam 11/52 yards. He definitely did the right thing with a girl in the dorm.

ESKS RAN THE BALL TONIGHT 31 TIMES!

Lions had 3 possessions in the 1st Q and not one run of the ball. NOT 1.

He's a great GM, but note that he is a GM and not a GM/Coach.

Eh, no team is as bad as it looks while losing nor as good as it is whilest winning.

Do know Wally cannot permit this, someone has to go and ASAP, to much unaccountability.

i thought the oline played bad , may not have been many sacks but there was presure all day. Lulay didnt play great, i didnt say that he did, but look how much time ray had to throw compared to Lulay, pretty big difference.

Re: Eskimos 33 - Lions 17 Post Game Stats and Comments

Well this seems familar to last season. We won the first but then stunk for 7 weeks in a row. We trotted out the we were close. That was true last season too. Thankfuly, IMO, this game wasn't close. Yes, IMO, the Lions were the team that looked the best in the Esks three wins. But thats not good enough. I want to see this team RUN on 1 down (just sometimes, please). It happened a bit today so its a start. But to only run on 2nd and short you can't be surprised to see it stuffed. I can't remember the last time I was confident in the Lions short yardage (or goalline)offence. Oh well, at least the next game is at home, we can voice our displeasure there. When does this become the coaches fault?

Re: Eskimos 33 - Lions 17 Post Game Stats and Comments

That was a bad game all around. The Lions came out flat and couldn't establish anything offensively in the first half. Ricky Ray feasted on the wide side of the secondary when he had time. I thought the B.C. front-7 played well but they couldn't stop the onslaught by themselves.

Here is my grading of the position groups for the Lions:

OFFENCE:

Quarterback: D
Lulay came out flat, threw behind receivers, didn't get much help when he did put the ball on target. He threw for 311 yards but much of that came late. His INT to Hill in the flat shouldn't have been thrown. The Lions were moving the ball well on the ground and in the air and were in scoring position, That was a potential 14-point swing. Instead of completing the drive and trailing 23-17, the Lions were down 30-10 and it was all but over.

Running backs: B
Harris and Robertson got a combined 11 touches for 80 yards on the ground and through the air, which isn't enough, but that's not their fault. They blocked well and responded when called upon, averaging a combined 7.6 yards a carry.

Offensive line: C
For the third straight game, pass protection was solid, giving up just one sack, but they failed to establish the line of scrimmage in the first half. A positive sign was that the Lions converted the only two second-and-short situations they faced, once by Robertson and once by Harris, but the fact they faced second and short only twice shows that they were in second and long all day. That's not on the offensive line, but the team can't win games that way.

Receivers: D
The young receivers didn't do anything until it was too late, Kamau Peterson was not much better and Dobson Collins hasn't done much in three games. That left Geroy Simon in triple coverage, and even he had trouble, misjudging several balls in the air and fumbling. This unit still has promise, as Gore and Foster showed at the end, but poor route-running was a big reason the passing game did not get established in the first half.

DEFENCE
Secondary: D
For two seasons, opponents have feasted on the wide side of the B.C. defence. Ricky Ray came into the game completing over 72% of his passes and he did that again today. David Hyland doesn't have the speed for wide wide halfback and hasn't been able to tackle. That's a recipe for disaster. Travis Williams didn't get a lot of action on the corner and is still an unknown. Davis Sanchez didn't provide much help in the middle. More personnel adjustments are needed to get this unit on solid ground.

Front 7: B
I have to lump the line and linebackers together because they played as a solid unit today against the run and pass, putting good pressure on Ray and holding Porter, Messam and McCarty to an average of 3.6 yards rushing on 23 carries, even when the Esks were trying to grind out yards and eat the clock at the end. Ray was only sacked once but he was hurried a lot.

SPECIAL TEAMS: D
Rolly Lumbala missed a block, allowing a rare partially blocked punt that resulted in a second-quarter Edmonton field goal for a 14-0 lead. Lumbala also took a holding penalty that nullified a 35-yard Tim Brown punt return at the start of the third quarter, with the Lions trailing 22-10. Those mistakes were killers. Otherwise, Brown and Harris were held in check by Edmonton's cover team. Paul McCallum was solid, as usual, hitting a 45-yard field goal in his only attempt and averaging 46 yards on 7 punts, not counting the 6-yarder that was partially blocked.

Reason: Edited to correct that the field goal after Lumbala's missed block made it 14-0.
