Fan from Hell

Let me preface my comment by saying I've been a season ticket holder for decades. In that time I've had fans sitting behind me, in front of me, beside me cheering on their respective teams. We had alot of fun bantering back and forth. No personal insults, just plain good nature fun. Tonight was different. Upon arriving at my seats I noticed that there was a husband and wife decked out in Rider colours sitting behind me. The smart ass comments started early and continued all night. They were commenting that Lion fans weren't in their seats at kickoff. The husband claim that Rider fans are in their seats 45 minutes before the start of the game. (Of course they are, what is there to do in Sask ?) They accused the Lions of rough play, deliberating injuring their player on the kickoff, hurling insults at fans leaving early, that Rider cheerleaders are prettier than the Felions etc.etc. The best part of the night aside from the Lions win was at the final gun when the fans really gave it to them.

I'm not trying to smear Rider fans. They are a dedicted bunch supporting their team and the CFL but these two take the cake.

There is something that is better......beating them twice in a row, the second one in their stadium. Rider fans, the ones ive met, are all ignorant, boorish idiots that either tell everyone they are the best over and over or complain about the refs when they lose. Sorry, sask fans are not the best in the league. This doesnt go for all their fans tho, i mean, the ones ive dealt with are prolly 1% but damn is that 1% irritating.

Re: Fan from Hell

I will admit that most of the Rider fans really know their football(again, what is there to do in Sask). However, it seems that everywhere I go online they are some of the most despised as they can be obnoxious beyond belief. I'm sure this is not all Rider fans. :cr:

But speaking of cheap shots, in the first quarter, Ty Williams was down on the field hurt. When he came to the sidelines, he was telling someone he took a cheap shot from a Rider. Now I'm not sure where he got hit but he was furious! He knew somebody punched him and he looked like he wanted revenge. The Riders are not as "saintly" as their fans want to believe.

Here's to another hard hitting game

To be honest the Rider fans are probably the best in the league. However, I have noticed an increase in the level of ignorance as well as they feel they have the "greatest in the world mentality". There are many Rider fans who are not like this as well but it is the blowhards that are noticed the most and there was a quote in the Edmonton Journal from a fan that mentioned "Rider fans were great as lovable losers but are obnoxious as defending Grey Cup Champions". To be fair this sort of mentality I have mentioned has been evident to me here in Edmonton as well with the Esks and Oilers. I give credit to Rider fans for being so dedicated but at the same time there will always be a time when they will not be on top and you tend to come off more foolish when the decline happens. One thing that has always bugged me is when "prairie" CFL fans tend to bash BC fans as not really caring about football but I see a lot more orange jersey and hats etc. at games there then many times here in Edmonton and the game I went to last season had a lot more energy and atmosphere then many games I have been to at Commonwealth.
Thank you for everything you did for OUR Lions Mr.Ackles, we will never forget you...RIP

Re: Fan from Hell

The ones i run into online are very annoying. They practically complain about everything. I mean the canned noise thing is still being beat on. They are usually very very passionate, but that's just a nice way to say it. The Rider fans i met in person are pretty good ppl. Maybe their real self only appears when they are behind a computer.

There were a lot of Rider fans at the game but they were the quietest ones I've ever encountered. I didn't have any in my area, but those in the upper deck seemed glued to their seats all night, even when the Riders made a play.

I noticed a lot of them in the upper rows of the end zone above the dressing rooms; that group got loud at times, particular late in the game when we were on offence.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

Methinks they're full of it on that based on my experiences at the recent Labour Day Classic in Regina. I left the big tailgater next to Mosaic about 30 minutes prior to kickoff. The crowd there did start to thin about 45 minutes prior to kickoff but there still had to be over 2000 Rider fans in there when I left. I got into my seat a few minutes prior to kickoff and there were still all kinds of fans streaming into the stadium as the game got underway. Sitting in my seat I felt like a turnstile at times as the same fans kept coming and going. There was me, a Lions' fan, and two Bomber fans who came in from the lower mainland sitting behind me who stuck it out to the final gun. Most of the Rider fans immediately surrounding me had already made their way to the parking lot. Many had started to leave with 5 minutes to go. Many Rider fans will fit the mould of what that husband and wife combo think all are like, but there are lots of Rider fans who arrive late and leave early just like many fans of all sports teams.

Re: Fan from Hell

One thing I noticed was that with so many Lions fans now wearing orange and black, the green and white doesn't stick out as much as it used to. But it did seem like there were more Rider fans around than in the past, especially downtown around BC Place in the afternoon.

I had two drunk guys behind me that were a like a middle aged Roughrider version of Beavis and Butthead. They were a bit annoying in the first half, but by the 4th quarter they were pretty much silent. When Buck hit Geroy for that deep TD late in the game they both looked like the doctor had just told them they were going to die!

Re: Fan from Hell

Golden rule when you're in a visiting stadium. Be respectful of those around you. I think it's fine to wear your team colours and cheer on your team, but by taunting the home fans you're asking for trouble and are flirting with disaster. I know for sure that I would have lost my temper.

Fortunately, I had the opposite experience last night. After the game on the concourse, a Rider fan came up to me and said 'good game,' I said the same thing and we shook hands. I think the overwhelming majority of Rider fans are really decent people.

Re: Fan from Hell

Just for counter point. I had a couple from Regina on their holidays sitting right behind me. They were terrific and fun. We had lots of banter going on back an forth all night and it never got outrageous or nasty.

I think I had the best line however.

He said "we" (the Riders) only need 2 minutes.

Response: (Directed at his wife) Is it true he only needs two minutes?
Her response. "Yes"
Tell me how long must a fan be strong? Ans. Always.

He was punched in the sternum by Glen January. In my opinion that just fired up the BC D-Line and they started taking the Rider O-Line apart after that. IMHO I think it was a bit of a turning point in the game.
