New Receiver In Camp

In addition to Wilson, the Lions have added Ryan Grice-Mullen from the U of Hawaii (hello Blitz!):

I saw Grice-Mullen play a ton at Hawaii. Caught a lot of Colt Brennan's passes. He could definitely push Skillern, Coleman or Hill.

Here is an interesting Q&A with the newest receiver in camp. 4.33 40?

Re: New Receiver In Camp

Signed as a FA by Houston.

Seems to have registered the 4.33 with a concern for his hamstring, maybe there is a little more in that tank as well.

Re: New Receiver In Camp

I think I'll tend to tread cautiously mostly because of his decision re: the NFL draft. Grice-Mullen did put up some impressive numbers in June Jones' pass happy Rainbow Warrior offence. Yet there are some mixed messages. He still had a year of NCAA eligibility left but opted to forego that and declared himself for the NFL draft. He didn't get drafted. He initially signed with Houston on May 9 and was released June 14. He was signed by the Bears on July 24 and cut on August 24. He dressed for the first 3 Bear exhibition games before being cut. He saw a little action in the first one but didn't step onto the field in the other two. He didn't register any stats. The NFL scouting analysis seems to contradict the message of the 4.38 40. 4.38 says blazing fast, but the analysis says more quick than fast. In the combine he did post the 3rd or 4th fastest time for receivers in the 20 yard shuttle.

Ryan Grice-Mullen (WR)
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 183
College: Hawaii
Conference: WAC
Hometown: Rialto, CA
High School: Rialto

Overview
Like teammate Davone Bess, Grice-Mullen is an undersized receiver who plays with more quickness than straight-line speed and will be best suited playing the slot receiver position in the NFL. With head coach June Jones and his aggressive offensive philosophies leaving Hawaii, Grice-Mullen elected to leave school early. It could be a decision he regrets, as much of his success is due to Jones' scheme and not elite athleticism or size on Grice-Mullen's part.

High School
A 2004 graduate of Rialto High School in California...earned three varsity letters in football and one in track...played quarterback, defensive back and running back...ran for 1,155 yards on 153 carries while splitting time between running back and quarterback in 2003...named all-county and all-league...an honor-roll student.

Analysis
Positives: Good initial quickness off the snap. ... Flashes burst out of his breaks. ... Generally reliable hands and shows the body control to adjust and make the difficult reception. ... Good lateral quickness to make defenders miss in the open field.

Negatives: More quick than fast. ... May struggle to generate separation from defenders in more traditional offenses due to only marginal quickness out of his breaks. ... Only normal acceleration when breaking into the open field and too often doesn't separate from defenders. ... Can be caught from behind.

Re: New Receiver In Camp

Jus seene da tape and dat RGM is gr8. Wut kinna guy wud not fin his lass year in da uni tho????

He looks pretty good on that tape despite not being a fan of dat musik.

Hambone makes good points but let's face it. They are a lot of very good players (look here in the CFL) that get missed in the draft or get a look there but somehow the coaches don't fancy their skills or just like a different player.

Unless this guy is some sort of financial hardship case, I am not sure he helped himself by leaving a year behind him unless he red shirted for a year and has a degree. The university system is a development camp for the pros and 4 years is what makes the most sense to maximize the value there.

It's like I used to tell guys who got cut from other teams and end up starters on mine and we're winning and the team that cut them isn't - every coach has his or her own idea of what or who is a good player. I know coaches who will never look at a guy for central defence under 5'11 or 6' and same for striker even if the guy is brilliant. Some will sign flakes and gypsies who move year after year and some won't.

His leaving school to be eligible for the draft may suggest that he thinks he's better than what he really is.

Did he have a #1 on his jersey? Beware of those that want to pose.

I think he has a little Nic Lewis in him from that video with a nose for the endzone, ready to sacrifice his body to cross the goal line. His shiftiness and quick acceleration is well suited for the CFL field size and motion.

Do you think the bigger field might work to his advantage, may help him "seperate from defenders"?

Motion will IMO, he is very quick in his cuts, he should gain that separation if they try and jam him instantly or drawing them into close coverage.

Re: New Receiver In Camp

He may work out better up here if he is shifty in the open field as opposed to in closer quarters down south. If he can make that first defender miss as the scouting report seems to suggest, he might do well with only adequate speed and a bigger field.

Re: New Receiver In Camp

I'm afraid the only field he'll see will be the practice field.

Both of these pickups are strictly insurance/depth additions.
I'd love you to say it to my face because you'd only say it once...if you ever had the courage to say it at all!! Blitz, 05/24/2008

Nice breakdown boys.

Look at Rolly Lumbala, who would have thought he'd see any playing time this season?

Ryan Grice-Mullen... kinda rolls off the tongue smoothly.

It would be nice to have another Rainbow Warrior on our team.
