This is an interesting turn. Jones heading elsewhere as a DC? Can't see it being the Argos if they couldn't come to terms with Monson.

If you saw Brent Monson walking down the street you might think he would be a Ti-Cat fan. Will be interesting to see how this works out.

The bigger surprise may be Chris Jones not being retained despite a seemingly good relationship with Scott Milanovich. CJ will not have too many landing spots left but maybe this points him back to Toronto.

All pieces now in place in Ottawa with the hiring of William Fields perhaps frees up Richie Hall to join the Lions and work with Ryan Phillips similar to how he worked with Jordan Younger. Might be interesting to have him call the defensive plays

Lots of talent left standing however on this one there are fewer chairs.

Re: Buck Pierce Named Lions Head Coach

Dave Dickenson has filled out his coaching staff in Calgary, promoting Bob Slowik to defensive coordinator and Craig Dickenson to special teams coordinator, hiring John Bowman away from the Lions as defensive line coach and adding Barron Miles as defensive backs coach. Bowman is a loss to the Lions. I thought he did a good job with what he had. I was also hoping that Miles would return to B.C., where he finished his playing career.

That's a shame about Bowman and more reality of what a difference year can make when it seemed like we had a good stable of young up-and-coming coordinators and assistants. So now down to two teams (Lions & Argos) needing DCs. Will Argos just give the full title to Kevin Eiben after the Monson negotiations broke down and of course RP is still under contract with BC for 2025. Moj had earlier mentioned Calgary as a potential destination for him.

I would have to think it would require a very convincing meeting with Buck & company for him to be retained with blame falling on Campbell for having a significant say in their defensive approach. But Bowman's departure suggests it will be a completely fresh start in 2025.

Are the Lions now looking at Richie Hall or Chris Jones?

Count me as indifferent towards Hall. Chris Jones? Toronto or some high school in Tennessee can have him. Hire Jones and the decision I've been mulling over on renewing my ST will become very easy.

Chris Jones has likely left Hamilton on his accord. He's ambitious and moves a lot even though last time as HC of the Elks, he created nothing but dysfunction.

I'm not sure he'd be a long term solution even if he was wanted here.

I think Buck needs to - and is more likely focused on - the task of selecting and building a top notch staff for the longer term.

The lack of leaks is less bearable than a kid wanting to know what he's getting for Christmas.

I very much doubt this meant releasing Terry Williams:

It was more likely foreshadowing the staff of new HC Buck Pierce.

Any delay might be details or better timing to wait past Christmas.

Is it possible that Buck will re-unite with his old QB buddy Jarius Jackson?

If not for Zoom we'd be hearing rumours but these days a lot of stuff doesn't need face to face when you know the people you're looking to hire.

The Lions still haven't cleared off last year's coaches from their site nor titles.

“Our vision for this club is an identity of toughness, grit, integrity and accountability. The standard will be set early and we will hold ourselves and our players to that standard,” said Pierce.
Any good to great HC feels as accountable to their team for their decisions as they feel players are accountable to the coach(es) and the team.
That for me is a foundational tenet of coaching to win. As a coach myself, every time I changed tactics for a game, took risks to restore a lead or catch-up, defended set plays or changed the line up mid-game in the back of your mind is your accountability to get things right.

OVERTIME

* Pierce becomes the third former Lions quarterback to become the team’s head coach. He joins Jackie Parker and Joe Paopao as the only other individuals to accomplish the feat. Parker played quarterback for the Leos in 1969 – the last year of his Hall of Fame career – and was head coach in 1970 and 1971. Paopao had two stints with the Lions as a quarterback– one from 1978 to 1983 and the other in 1990. He was the Lions head coach for a single season in 1996.

* Former UBC head football coach Ted Goveia has been named the general manager of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Goveia has been with the Blue Bombers organization since 2013 as the team’s Senior Assistant General Manager, Director of Player Personnel. Goveia was at UBC from 2007 to 2009 and went 10-16 during that time.
