I liked the offence, until our bubble burst.
We gave Jennings more time, with some adjustments. Quick passes as on the out to Manny for the first TD.
Manny played strong.
Shaq J showed remarkable speed and agility on his TD.
JJ24 is an underutilized, but very effective RB.
Although there was pressure on JJ10, he was only sacked once. There were many good pass protection blocks. I was going to post one by A Johnson. Maybe later.
We saw a screen pass and a swing pass. They tried to do some new stuff. JJ10 rolled out.
We were in good shape until Rainey picked up a ball he should have let go into the end zone. Then an ill-advised screen pass to Burnham, who looks like the wrong guy for that type of play. Defensive lapses in coverage or effort. A dropped TD pass. Onside kick, and the great fold up was underway.
Sometimes struggling teams just need an excuse to fold. And that is what we did.
IMO our defence is wrong in so many ways. Wrong INT D Line personnel. Very confused secondary. IMO Thompson should not be at Safety. We get nothing from that position, and it is not really his fault. He is athletic and should be able to contribute on the corner, or as a sub. We should have known our DB lineup coming from TC. But no, we have tinkered and tinkered. We also tinkered with an endless list of supposed rush ends.
Passive approach on D, which should be slow death. But for us, it is oftentimes quick, merciless death. Offences know what we will do and how we will do it. We do OK against the run, but that might be because we don't stop the pass. We do not get pressure on the QB. And that has to be Job 1 for the defence. It does not look like a priority of our philosophy. We would rather contain. Instead of getting containment, our overall pass defence is a sieve.
STs? Not special. Pedestrian. Predictable. Easily tricked. Vulnerabilities for all the world to see.
Is this an autopsy? Could be. If not quite, the patient is very ill.
And that brings us back to ownership, football management and coaching. It is far from state of the art. IMO ...
Business management is another, separate, huge issue.
I don't think it is an exaggeration to say the organization is in bad shape. Perhaps Braley thinks everything is fine. Ouch ...
