Tighthead wrote:So you still don't know the context, and are passing judgement based upon a glib comment from Buono that may not even be serious - or in anyway accurate. That is impressive.

And you are calling Romberg a loser, taking great offence, and posting about it?

It must be fun to go through life looking to get pissed at everything.

See you next Tuesday, Ed Lunsford.
Do what you think you should.

Did I once, ever, say Romberg is a "loser"? Once did I say such a thing? Nope, that is your projection and indeed, one's defense via taking offence for something..I nver once said.

As for the other stuff, "douche" and what have you, that is your choice.

I happen to think that the CFL is an honourable profession, it bothers me greatly when it is disrespected, if that does not bother you that is fine.

It does speak volumes imho though.

So you still don't know if he actually said it or if Buono was joking, correct? If he did make such a remark, you don't know the context, weren't party to the entire conversation correct?

Just establishing that you have no reasonable basis for the conclusions you have drawn.

No, I do have:

LU's interview with Buono, and the fact there has been not a hint that he would sign in BC.

Would Buono have said such a thing if Romberg was on the radar?

Doubtful, not seeing it, I do stand behind the idea that a Professional Athlete SHOULD desire to cap their career with a Championship, money IS money, but can that money make up for the pain, injuries and dedication that is required to be a professional athlete?

Not in my eyes, there is a horde of wealthy retirees, how many have climbed the Athlietic Mtn and reached the Mountain Top?

When a pro athlete hits 50, does one suppose they would be happy with just the money and not a Championship?

Do we even know if Buono and Romberg talked?

If they did, do we know if Buono was making a bit of a joke about the disparity in salaries between the NFL and the CFL?

For certain, a veteran NFL player, let's say Rob Meier, would only be coming back to the CFL for perhaps $100,000 +, while in the NFL, he would be making over $1,000,000 per year. So in such a scenario, Buono cracks a joke: Yeah, we talked, but it was not about him coming here for $100,000. It was about him buying the team.

Terrific line by Wally Buono to writers dismissing OL arrival:"Brett Romberg said if the club was for sale he might consider buying it" #CFL
Unless Buono confirmed it, I am thinking it was a Buono joke, that they didn't even talk, and that Buono had no intention of contacting him.

Brett Romberg: Adam Rita drafted Romberg, a native of Windsor, Ont. who lives in Florida, in 2002 but the Lions still hold the rights to the 30-year-old. Because he has eight years of pensioned NFL service and is an offensive lineman there was sufficient reason to ask whether the Lions have interest in a player cut by the Atlanta Falcons on the weekend whose price tag because of his NFL bank account would figure to make him affordable for a CFL team.

But we're going to put the coach down as doubtful on that one. Buono: "Brett Romberg said that if the club was for sale he might consider buying it." And with that the office door was closed.
Sounds to me like a little joke by Buono.

I'm going to wager that any NFLer who was a starter on a NCAA championship team feels like they climbed a pretty high mountain.

So you still don't know if Buono was serious, you don't know if they actually talked, you don't know the entire conversation, you don't know his health or family situation. However. you remain certain that regardless of his life situation, he should be up in BC joining a 2-7 team so that he can finally experience success.

What conclusion are you able to draw from the "fact" that "there has been not a hint that he would sign in BC"? I would suggest nothing that doesn't require a ridiculous amount of speculation.

When a pro athlete turns 50, they care about their knees, their back, their wealth and their children - kind of like everyone else who turns 50.

Hope so.

Gotta be honest here, what 95 Grey Cups?

6 billion people in the world, how many can say they have won one?

If I have offended Tighthead, I apologize, could be his worldview and my worldview are totally different.

That is what I'm not grasping, granted football IS a profession for him, which means playing centers around Cash, but still, if he has not made his pile by now, chances are good, he never will in the football business.

Why not take a shot at finishing things off with a gaudy, diamond encrusted, platinum Championship ring?

And THAT is what I mean by competitive fire.
That's just it. While we as fans would give our left nut for a chance to earn one of those gaudy Championship rings they aren't the be all to end all for all athletes. If a ring was so important the AHL would be full of former NHL players who decided a Calder Cup ring was a suitable replacement for the Stanley Cup ring they didn't earn.

While Romberg grew up in Windsor he did so literally in the shadows of the US and has lived and/or played in the US for nearly half his life. He currently lives in south Florida all year round. It would make zero sense for him to trundle off 4500km from home to finish off the year by playing 6 or 7 games here for a 2-7 team for maybe $40K worth of prorated salary. All he needs to do is catch on for an NFL team and play 1 game this fall to earn the same coin. Injuries being as they are he could very well get another opportunity very soon. Signing a 1+1 CFL contract would remove him from the NFL job market until the 2012 season, if not permanently. If Romberg did have CFL in the back of his mind the time to consider it would be next spring.

Stats are showing that the life expectancy of NFL players is considerably shorter than that of the average NFL fan. Studies continue to point out the debillitating effects of playing football and how devestating they can be not only on the ex-athlete but also on their families. The information is out there and players are finally respecting it when making career decisions. Is that ring really worth it? If they were still alive one could ask some of the following if the ring was worth it:

David Boone (53)
York Hentschel (52)
Bill Stevenson (55)
Mike Webster (50) - I think there are at least 2 other team-mates from Webster's Steeler days who died in a similar tragic manner.
Andre Watters (44)

There's a much longer list of former players whose lives have been full of addictions to drugs, alcohol and painkillers that led to serious health issues and premature death.

It is funny that you wrote this, Hambone, as after watching The Fifth Estate feature a couple of years back on Boone, Hentschel and Stevenson and hearing Dan Kepley speak during that interview, I too wondered if all of those Grey Cup rings were worth it for those guys.
