Edmonton twice, in 1977 and 1990. The 1977 team might have used weather and field conditions as an excuse (though there were rumours of of excessive partying) but the 1990 team, like today's Ticats, was simply outclassed. These two teams didn't belong on the same field, or at least not this one.
Toronto really mauled Saskatchewan in 1997 and I remember Hamilton having it in the bag by halftime against Edmonton in 1986.

Hamilton was able to survive the French, beat the centre of Canada, but came up well short against Rider Nation. Durant sounded much like a younger Burris when his Stamps (and especially himself) were snubbed at the Schenley's, just not quite grown up to understand when to show more class than the lowest denominator and Henry's case it was himself that brought is the lowest denominator.

Re: Grey Cup Game Day Thread

This wasn't a good game. The cats really were outclassed today. How Getzlaf gets outstanding Canadian with 3 catches for 76 yards is beyond me. He was a non factor. Better to give to an OLineman or Hughes for there efforts blocking. Thought the whole game pretty much turned on 2 plays in the first quarter. 1. The fumble that Durant recovered and the fumble that Sheets recovered for a big gain. Those two plays go the other way and things might have been a bit closer. The Riders were the better team by far and deserved the win. For the Grey Cup Game's sake however, lets hope for a little more parity next year.

Durant smoking a cigar in violation of the law! Good on him. It just goes to show how some guys don't understand the rules or feel it doesn't apply to them.

The TV ratings might take a hit for this game due to the early part of the game.

Funny thing about the Riders. MOST of their players are classy in their interviews post game and pre-game including Geroy Simon.

Hamilton has to find some positives today in that they played every game away from Hamilton and their youth is something to build on.

I think I never want to hear Rider Nation again. Too much TSN.

Riders classless in winning the WDF and had to be told to come to trophy presentation. Classless in the player introductions today. Two introduced and they just run out as a team in what had to be an orchestrated move. This all despite the teams and host broadcaster arranging it so the intros could be done when the home viewers could see it.

The intro was dead for the Ticats as the crowd had no one but Riders there. It didn't have a GC crowd atmosphere in the stadium to home viewers.

Good for the Riders, and good for Geroy to shine at the big one. I'm glad the Riders won--full value for the win.

I don't ever want to hear Rider Nation, Leaf Nation, Red Sox Nation, or any other Nation.

About "Canada's Team". The Cowboys were good to cheer for until someone came up with calling them "America's Team" round about the late Staubach/Landry era. (neither of who would have appreciated that moniker), and when the America's Team hype took hold the team (and more importantly their fans) took on a much more serious arrogance. Sound familiar?

Re: Grey Cup Game Day Thread

Again, very bad pre-game procedures on the part of the Roughriders to storm the field during the player introductions and embarrassing the PA announcer and forcing him to make an impromptu introduction for Saskatchewan.

------------------

The half-time show was okay with the CFL cheerleaders/dancers surrounding the stage but I noticed something. It looks like the Felions didn't go to the 2013 Grey Cup or maybe even they weren't invited. There were cheerleaders from all other seven teams (and none of them were from the male members from Winnipeg, Edmonton, or even hometown Saskatchewan) but the Felions were not among them. Maybe with their indoor stadium they never require parkas and the Lions/league were not willing to pay for the Felions to perform outdoors in the cold weather.

------------------

The trophy presentations took much longer than usual after the game. Maybe one reason was because they were tabulating the results for the MVP since there were several good potential winners, and MVC was even harder to choose since Chris Getzlaf didn't score any TD's and they were trying to see of other Canadians outshined him.

------------------

In the years to come, will the 2013 Grey Cup be one of the top 10 best games ever? My guess is no since having a very close, down-to-wire game is a huge requirement in making a great, memorable championship game and this was not the case this year.

------------------

Despite the fact that they won at home and that the Roughriders are the only pro-sports team in Regina, it looks like the fans in Regina were relatively well behaved in that they didn't storm the field after the game. And there doesn't seem to be a celebration riot in Regina right now.

.
Following is an excerpt from Lowell Ullrich's interview earlier this week with Dennis Skulsky:

"We aren’t sending the Felions. They stayed in the RCMP barracks in 2003 and we don’t see putting the ladies through that this time. We’ll support and do what we need to support the CFL and the Riders to put on the best Festival possible but believe me this is about the Riders"

That...IMO is a crock. Some how, some way, either the team or the league could have found the Felions suitable accommodation. This just reeks of cheapness. I believe that the Grey Cup is a league event, for ALL members of the CFL, not just a Saskatchewan Roughriders event. :thdn:

I can't believe you're even asking the question. From an entertainment value POV this game was an absolute turkey almost right from the very start. Ssk might as well have played the Washington Generals today.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

Re: Grey Cup Game Day Thread

I noticed their absence but frankly, it didn't bother me. Going to Regina in late November is hardly a dream trip. I thought that maybe there was another squad that was missing too. Maybe the Al's?

Re: Grey Cup Game Day Thread

Did not enjoy the game but congrats to the Riders and their fans. I did the right thing IMO, and watched them collect their trophy and celebrate.

I didn't think Durant had what it took and contrary to the TSN crew, he's still got a bit of a doubter here. Yes, he won. Dunigan said Durant had no turnovers. Well I guess so. Like Climie said, he fumbled the ball three times. Got the first one back himself, Sheets took the second for a forty yard gain and Hamilton recovered the third fumble. I though fumbles (lost ones anyways) counted as turnovers.

Once he survived those fumbles though, he did what he needed to be successful. Certainly threw some good balls and Sheets had an amazing day. And that Rider D did what it took.

So, the Toronto Sports Network became the The Saskatchewan Network for an afternoon. I do think there will be some things coming out of this. Maybe the whole player intro thing gets changed. I don't know. I kinda get what the Riders may have been thinking. Its about the win, everything else was secondary. And thankfully their secondary held up....

I'm going to have to stop wasting money on nice food for Superbowls/Grey Cups. I bought some BBQ but really during the game, not really interested in eating. Probably should have invested in some cider or rum/coke. Didn't see the irony at the moment but this dummy spent the afternooon drinking green tea..... :bang:

Unless you happen to be a Riders fan. In which case it will be one of the top 4.
