I agree that it can be taken out of context. And that it can make a guy look better or worse than he is as a player.

It's a bit like having a guy with a rocket arm (Ryan Leaf) who is missing many of the other attributes that a QB needs.

On the other hand, I do believe it is useful for teams to know the relative speed of the athletes. In that context I believe the 40 certainly makes more sense than the 100. It is also useful to know how strong and fit the athletes are, etc.

The measurement process is loaded with problems. Even the interview process can be misleading.

The bottom line is: Can the guy play? Size, speed, even intelligence in some cases, can be over-rated.

Is it a crapshoot? Not necessarily. Over time the best judges of talent come out ahead on their rosters. Look at the Alouettes under Popp, the Lions under Buono, the Steelers in the NFL, etc.

Arceneaux, IMO, has good enough speed flat out, and especially reacting to the ball, and running with the ball after the catch, to be very effective as a player, in the CFL, or the NFL, if he gets that chance.

Well, a couple of differences 1 yd rule, the wider field means Wr's sort of round off their routes instead of crisply breaking them off.

That said, I think Stephen Black is going to be really special this season.

I know from personal experience how easy it is to get infatuated with player measurables; the stud athlete will get second and third chances, the Wes Welker/Danny Woodhead pure guts kid gets overlooked. It's something that I try very hard to avoid.

A good coach is able to weed out the "Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane" type players, which requires much more work/due diligence than looking at a dude's numbers.

Go, Manny, in Minny.

I used to like the Vikings a lot, in the days of Kapp, Grant, Tarkenton, Chuck Foreman, etc.

Not so much lately.

I hope Manny gets to play a lot, and I hope he shows well.

IMO he has the physical talent and the hands (IMO he has the necessary very good hand eye coordination, can react to the ball, can go and get the ball, can catch under tight coverage, can outleap most DBs who tend to be much smaller than he is. He has had the occasional lack of concentration, but IMO not so much that it is a problem). Can he run the routes with the NFL's precision? Can he get separation? Can he perform on the bigger stage? Can he make the adjustment to the athletes he competes against? I don't see why not.

I don't know about the hands, seems to me they were a work in progress, thats why I didn't think he'd stick. I guess though, better football minds than mine see it differently, so good luck Manny.

Congrats Manny. :beauty: I was selfishly hoping that he'd stay another year here in BC, but cannot blame him one bit for chasing the golden ring.

Precedent says that financial terms will offer a true indicator for his chances of making the Vikings roster. As it stands, Percy Harvin is the only sure lock on the roster, Sidney Rice is a UFA which will undoubtedly get re-upped by the Vikes. Bernard Berrian is pretty solid lock based on the contract that he signed in 2008 (6 years, $42M), the others are journeymen/projects.

I could see Manny getting a chance in camp to compete for a roster spot and the #4 WR role, at the very least a chance to return kicks. Go get it. :beauty:

I would guess that Shawn Gore moves into Manny's spot at SB?

They have just confirmed he has signed with the Vikings.
Good luck to him. May we see him in the pro bowl with Cameron.

Bardia Ghahremani, the agent for the 23-year-old receiver from Alexandria, La., confirmed today that Arceneaux has agreed to a three-year deal with the Vikings which could be worth as much as $1.8 million US, including signing bonus.

Berrian had a terrible yr and is making a mint.

FWIW, heard 70k signing bonus, so Manny is risking 42k trying to make the jump with a potential lockout looming.

Could you give some more examples to support this assertion? Are you saying CFL players are inherently more courageous?

Other than Owens, could you name say 10 of the many receivers you cite?

Why is this particular characteristic endemic to the NFL? Why not the CFL?
