I can not understand people who like Jarious that never moves the ball for a whole half consistently. Almost every interview from other teams say that Jarious does not worry them. Most ex footballers say he will never be a short to medium passer. I thought Buck did an admirable job once he got in sync. For the life of me I can't see why people are in love with the long bomb. Jarious over does it. Watch for Buck to get the starting role by September. Also, look for Casey to be cut and out of the league by Sept 1.

UBC Thunderbird showed up to play from the opening KO with a two touch goal, getting his own assist (and yes that is possible in this game). He then knocked in a three more (although the I will wait for the official stats to see if he ended up with an assist as one was punched in close to the GL by his teammate), plus he ran back a couple of defensive gems, limiting Winger from getting a break away (although Winger was smart and took the dive in the box trying to draw a penalty shot). The final goal was made by the Vancouver Giants mascot and assisted by you guessed it UBC T-bird. A final replay should be on the highlight reel of Leo, making like an OL pushing the scrum downfield, the wrecking crew would have been proud of that instinctive run.
The Lions should sign the UBC T-Bird. He got in a couple of good licks last night and showed he's not afraid to hit.

Uh - well first of all it is apparent you are in no way a BP supporter, so whenever you write about him I take it for what its worth
But in answer to your question - the answer is "last year before he was hurt, and the year before that and even in his rookie year". And if you cant remember its because you either were not watching or not paying attention or have forgotten by your own choice. I have newspaper articles that speak to that fact. And how about his QB ratings in the previous years. How about Wally saying that Buck was further along than Jeff Garcia when he coached him. And in the games when Buck won - his qb rating was high -not just average - it was way up there. I was at the huge Calgary game and Edmonton game that he won - not to mention the other games so far in his career.
2005 - Qb rating of 100.6
2006 - QB rating of 109.0
2007 - before the shoulder separation 91.7
and in the game he was hurt he was 18-25 253 yards and 3 Tds and no Int - game ended in a Tie because of that missed field goal try on first down.

Second Response
2005 - Rookie year - 4th qt comback win over riders in relief of DD - out came the phrase 'Buck and a quarter' to win
2006 - Buck Starts 3 games and wins all 3 of them
BC vs Edmonton 20 of 24 - 274 yards 1 TD 0 Int
BC vs Montreal 13 of 16 - 221 yards 3 TD 0 Int
BC vs Calgary 25 of 31 - 297 yards 1 TD I Int
Stats for 3 games 58 of 71 792 5 TD 1 Int
DD finish's the season
2007
Buck Starts 4 games
2 Wins
1 Loss by 1 point to Winnipeg
1 Tie to Calgary due to the missed field goal in OT on first down
BC vs Hamilton 17 of 26 - 187 yards 1 TD 2 Int - win
BC vs Calgary 7 of 14 - 74 yards 0 TD 1 Int - win
BC vs winnipeg 19 of 31 - 243 yards 1 TD 0 Int lose by 1 point 22-21
BC vs Calgary 18 of 25 - 252 yards 3 TD 0 Int - Tie game - separated shoulder -
Stats as a starter 61 of 96 756 yards 5 TD 3 Int
But with a separated should he was 11 of 16 116 yards against Edmonton a few weeks later in relief and then again in relief in the Hamilton game 3-4 61 yards untill the shoulder was hit again and done.
2008
Opening game - whole team loss - bad game
However Bucks numbers before rehurting shoulder
9 of 14 160 Yards 1 Td - good numbers for one half - leaves at half time down by 3 - lose by 10
Cant remember when Buck won for us a game?

I was very happy to see Buck get some playing time against Edmonton and they were quality reps. He took a big hit on the shoulder and it didn't have any effect. Buck has always been a high percentage thrower but his pocket presence was also back. His sixteen yard scamper reminded me of the Buck of old, in that he he didn't hesitate when he took off and had his old jump. He was also wise to get down, which showed that he is smarter now about protecting his body.
Buck hardly played last season, after his four game stint, early in 2007. That was a lot of rust, both practice and game rust, from that point last year to the off-season. He's really needed the time to get his game back at practices and to allow himself to more fully heal. I still believe he's the future of our Leos, longer term, at the quarterback position. I'm sure that it's been both challenging and diapppinting for him to not be the starter so far, this season, after Game 1, but he really needed the time. He was beaten up everywhere last year and the additional practice reps this season, before playing again, really looked like they've helped get his game back.
It's a long season in the CFL and we'll need Buck, both this season, and longer term. He's still young. Buck has been tremendously classy with the present quarterback situation. His comments, supporting Jarious, before the Edmonton game, were impressive and while Buck said that Jarious would be just as supportive if the situation was reversed, it was still noteworthy for a youonger quarterback who loves to play.
Jarious had to be very patient for a long time. Buck may have to be more patient but when his time comes again he'll be more than ready. That time could be sooner than expected or a bit longer than hoped for...but the way he's carried himself through this challenge is recognized by teammates and coaches. The road to success is filled with speed bumps.

My only concern with Buck, and it has nothing to do with his ability, is the hits he has taken. For what ever reason it seems that Defences tend to tee off on our QB's and seem unusually focused on taking them out of the game with the "Big Hit". It seems, from my admittedly biased point of view, that our guy's take more late and questionable hits than do anyone elses. It seems to have started with DD when teams realized the only way to stop him was to take him out of the game. I fear this is becoming the case with Buck, the defence seemed to turn it up a notch and come after him looking to lay a lick on him and take him out of the game.

Not sure if it was the late finish but I am simply amazed at the number of people who head to the exits with 4 or 5 minutes to go with the outcome still in doubt. It happened in the previous game against Montreal too that also went down to the wire. And we sit among season ticket holders!
SG, you must remember, this is Vancouver we're talking about. It's very important for Vancouverites to get home to their cup of Ovaltine and their bwankie.

I think it may have alot to do with the offensive plays run by the Lions ie. the quarterbacks sitting in the pocket waiting for the crossing patterns to open up. Dickenson and Pierce took some hellacious hits last year standing in the pocket.

All the more reason why the guy at LT has to be on top of his game. Stith was there when Buck got cranked in game one against Calgary, but it was his first ever start. It cost Buck the starter's job, which is sad. So far this season, Murph hasn't yet been the old Murph we once knew, intimidating opposing D linemen and coaches. (Higgy, clap clap?) Hope that changes soon.
Lions 60 had a good game on Friday despite one rather suspect holding call, IMO. Looked lame to me after watching the (recorded) game on TV after we got home, anyway.

That is for sure. It seems at times our OL is unable to protect the pocket. Look at the success friday night when Buck rolled out. He threw on target - accurately - with the right touch and hit his receivers in stride while he was in stride himself. On the deep pass to Paris Jackson to Jackson he was drilled.

No - SM it was actually Murphy that was in there at LT standing there like a pylon while two defenders went right by him on two different plays. Buck took two vicious hits as a result and directly on that shoulder. Murphy had only been in TC for 3 days and yet was starting, he had no business being in there. Actually I was hoping Stith or the other LT would have been in there because they did a good job in fighting for a job in the preseason game and in the second preseason game - Buck came out not even touched. Then all of a sudden Murphy shows up - with no real quality practice time. Murphy was not ready to play and it did really 'hurt' Buck in a literal sense. This game as long gone by the days when a guy can just show up for 2 days and play. The players are faster and stronger and you better be ready no matter how good you were the previous year.

I stand corrected; after looking at the game DVD, it was indeed Murphy.
My point is further enforced by this.

I was noticing that too, Ziggy. Buck was injured twice by defenders jumping on his shoulder while he was already on the ground. It's was like they were intentionally trying to injure him. I don't think our players deliberately try to injure an opponent or other teams against opposing QB's?
It was good to see Buck duck at the end of his 16-yd scamper on Friday. If would be great if he could purrfect the hook slide, (which Burris and others have used to great effect), then if the defenders even bump him after the scramble, another 15 yds is tacked on.
If Wally is going with the two-QB system, perhaps we could use Buck for the short and medium passing and put in Jarius for the 50-yd long bombs and 3rd-down gambles? 8)

Big Time wrote:I guess I'm going to differ with nearly everyone's opinion because I thought last night's game was absolutely painful to watch. It was two extremely sloppy teams making mistake after mistake with no real flow. The BC offense looked terrible and if it weren't for the great field position they were getting from turnovers and special teams, they could have easily been blown out. Banks was absolutely torched throughout the first game. It wasn't so much that he was just getting beat, it was how easy the Esks were making it look. On the first TD it looked like Banks was just jogging as he watched the receiver go by him.
The 7:30pm start was killer and should not be done again. It made a tedious game even worse because of the infernal delays and "injuries". I use quotation marks because Macchoochoo teams are notorious for having players fall down limp whenever the Lions get any momentum. Watching a game until 11pm is a test of anyone's patience.
The play calling was questionable again as they didn't even try a running play until the 2nd quarter.
I made the trek to watch a good match up but was dissapointed with the Lion's performance too. Great to get the 2 points but man, our secondary really needs to tighten up. I lost count how many times Korey was molested out there Friday night. The fans around me were all shaking their heads at how sloppy the seconday's performance was. I think we are lucky to be 4-3 ... it is a work in progress for this team. Also notice how the front four looked much fresher in the fourth quarter with the rotation. The bye week will do the Leo's a lot of good. Hoping Geroy will be available the next game because without him, there is obviously a big drop in talent and production with the receiving corp.
I have no problem with pulling JJ but BP wasn't any different IMO. They were both utterly average and I'm having a hard time understanding why after every time BP takes a snap, certain fans call for him to be the starter. I can't even remember the last time BP won us a game and I don't count last night because it was defense and special teams that was the difference last night. BP's only good drive was aided by an 45 yards of unsportsmanlike penalties and was capped by an end zone reception.
Stefan Logan and Jason Clermont were the bright spots last night.
All in all, this team is hard to get a read on. They show flashes of dominance and then follow it up with long stretches of mediocre or apathetic play. We all know they have the ability to win but they have yet to play a full 60 minutes. I'm glad they go the win but this team remains a work in progress.
