Anyone notice the whistle prior to JCs TD catch

The refs seem to need an over-haul after the season

I heard it too. Surprised the broadcast crew didn't mention it. It was probably some banjo-picin-hic in the stands. Didn't that happen to the Lions a few years back, when a touchdown was called back in WPG when a fan blew a whistle?

I'd be careful about making comments about banjo pickers hoons...Lion Guy often brings his banjo to our home Leo games!

Thanks for the correction on Jake Ireland being the head referee for the Grey Cup game last year...although I'm still trying to get the fact registered in my brain. Ireland, on his best day couldn't grade out higher than a "D" and his average grade has to be in the "F" range. Maybe he's on a special grading program because he has learning difficulties!!

On another topic lets give some props to Jason Jiminez. While Murphy has got a ton of attention this season and Sherko also got into the limelight in Saskatchewan Jiminez has very quietly had a great season to date. He's been very disciplined, done a great job of pass protection, and we're run the stretch play to his side very effectively!! He did a great job last night against an outstanding defensive end!!

I heard a whistle a couple times during the game that came from nowhere...once on JC's catch ( glad he caught that, because the refs weren't throwing a flag for the screening by the db ) and once during a Winnipeg drive ( I think it was on the play when O'Neal tipped the ball and Anderson grabbed it for the score....

Can't believe the overturn on the Pottinger fumble recovery. Ball off the inside of his thigh, you could see it change direction. If nothing else, it's inconclusive and fumble should have stood.

Anyhow, Lions were full value for the win. I was more thrilled about the Lions win than the Canucks loss. I was hoping both would win, but if I had to pick one only, it was the Lions victory I wanted most.

Saturday morning musings....

* The old adage is the team that wins the battle in the trenches wins the ball game. So how did we take this one then? I thought Winnipeg's O-line (missing 2 starters in C Abby Khan and G Matt Sheridan) did a very good job of neutralizing our D-line. And they also opened up some huge holes for Charles Roberts.....or at least holes big enough to fit a coat-hanger through for the diminutive running back.

* Our O-line, while very strong in pass protection, could not seem to move the Bombers front seven. And did Joe Smith not seem just a step slow to you last night? Maybe he was not getting good footing on the slick turf.

* There aren't too many nights when Charles Roberts rushes for over 100 yards and the Bombers lose. And while Charlie seemed incredulous that the "stolen ball" was allowed to stand, there would have been no complaints from fans at CanadInns Stadium had his second effort carried him into the endzone.

* Kudos to the Lions' D for 2 impressive goal line stands.

* What's happened to Lockdown U? They've become First Down U lately. While they're not giving up the deep ball, they're continually getting burned on short and intermediate routes by either gambling (jumping routes) and losing or being out of position. Still, Winnipeg boasts one of the, if not THE best receiving corps in the league and great QB who can thread passes against any secondary.

* While we got a break on an Aaron Hunt facemask in the 4th quarter that was missed, I am still scratching my head wondering how McCallum's punt was ruled no yards. I watched the 3 camera angles multiple times on a high def screen. While I can't prove conclusively that Albert Johnson touched it, I also couldn't prove that he didn't touch it. And that's not enough to overturn a call. I will say that if anything, it did appear to hit the inside of his thigh and carom.

* Actually, I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out how our back-up kicker who never sees the field for 3 pointers could nail two 40+ yarders in a swirling wind. NOW these rookie imports understand why Bret Anderson gets excused from training camp and the odd practice....

* I sometimes wonder why Jarious doesn't trust his feet more when there are no receivers open instead of trying to force the ball into tight coverage. He's a very effective runner when he pulls the ball down.

* How many challenges does a team get? I counted 3 for the Bombers in the 2nd half. Doug Berry was laying down more yellow cloth Friday night than a busboy.

* As much as I was hoping that Tony Simmons would break out of his funk so we could see him gather in a ball and take off past defenders, fact is we're getting more production out of Josh Boden. Nothing too flashy, just great routes and pretty good hands. And he's only going to get better with more pro experience. It's also allowing us to put an extra import DB on the roster.

* So just how strong is Jarious's arm? Did anyone catch that 15-20 yard completion to Geroy in the 4th quarter against a stiff wind that put us inside the Bomber 10? It was a laser and his feet weren't even planted!!

It was a tough contest David and I agree with you that the Bombers interior of their offensive line did a great job in the second half especially. However, Williams and Hunt did a very good job inside, not only on the goal line stands but plugging up Blink inside a lot of times. Blink got more yardage to the outside or cutting back. I thought we really missed Jamal Johnson out there but then again I'm biased when it comes to him.

No way the football didn't touch Albert Johnson because it changed direction as well as lost speed. Regardless, when there isn't conclusive evidence you don't change the call. Good 'ol Jake Ireland, though, didn't want to make that call at that time of the game in Winnipeg and overruled it. Guess he''s hoping for some free bug spray from Bomber management the next time he refs in the 'Peg in the summer!!

With regard to Jarious I wish he would run more often but with an arm that strong he prefers to pass. Jarious is a powerful runner with tremendous speed. He made another excellent scramble last night and also broke a tackle in the backfield to take off for another gain. He's a load coming downfield. He took a hit last night on a run that would have likely put another quarterback out of the game. He goes over 230 pounds...he's heavier than Joe Smith but doesnt' look it because he's so compact. I wrote earlier that Jarious could probably throw a purrfect spiral in a hurricane! Early in the game he rolled right and threw deep to Boden that Boden couldn't haul in but it was an incredible throw in those conditions.

With regard to Lockdown U, there were a number of factors out there. First of all Winnipeg has the best passing offence in the league with the top 3 receivers right now, in terms of catches. Secondly, while we had our whole defense back in, except for Jamal Johnson, it was the first game playing their old positions for Marsh, Glover, and Washington, and it takes more than one game to get that chemistry back. Thirdly, Winnipeg was able to establish Blink in this game, giving them a balanced attack, and that makes things tougher. Fourthly, we miss Jamal Johnson.

We've been going with the eight back defensive back set on passing downs and I still don't think we've got it down. Finally, while I'm probably going to get nailed for saying it I really don't think Miles has been on top of his game at free safety for a good chunk of this season. Still, while we did allow them to move the ball through the air, we did shut them down on pass defense a number of times on second down too!!

With regard to your comments about Josh Boden....I think we've all seen his potential and Simmons foot injury gave him his opportunity and he's been making the most of it. Boden has always had talent but he really needed to understand the play book, run disciplined routes, read the defense...all things that take time and especially time for a guy who hasn't played college football.

Wally has brought him along slowly, based upon the time he's practiced with us, made him work on special teams this season to prove himself. That has been wise, considering his age!! I think we're all pulling for Josh Boden and it's great to see him making the most of his opportunity. What a great throw that Jarious threw to him low, with the wind swirling, and what an excellent catch Boden made in that game,

Joe Smith started the game strongly in the first quarter I thought, but he definitely tailed of some as the game wore on.

I think that perhaps the late hit (which wasn't called) by Hebert, I believe, did some damage and he wasn't feeling too good after that. At first I thought it was a helmet to the back, but on the replay it could have been an elbow. He got up slowly after that hit and wasn't the same back after that.
Enough is enough.

I think you're absolutely right Gerry. Joe took some vicious hits in the first half and probably just had his bell rung, limiting his effectiveness. He was still a bull, but I thought just a touch tentative when making his cuts.

I think this is fair comment Blitz; I've noticed the same thing. Barron was on fire in the first third of the season but lately hasn't been making plays. Could be due to the fact he's been trying to quarterback a secondary that has seen so many changes and players in unfamiliar roles. Now that things are settled, we'll hopefully see the Barron of old back.

Some of us Lionbackers predicted great things for him (like Lionut did for Paris Jackson), watching with amazement at some of things he's done in practice for the past couple of years. It's nice to see our initial instincts validated.

However, the play was overruled on the challenge by Winnipeg even there wasn’t conclusive evidence to overrule it. Instead of getting the football at mid-field we end up getting a no yards call instead. A pure homer call by Jake Ireland that would never have been made if the play wasn’t in Winnipeg’s home field aat a crucial time in the game.

A little physics law for Jake:

KE=1/2*m*v

also:

A body in motion tends to stay in motion.

So knowing some basics physics please explain to me how the football stops dead after "going through the legs of Johnson without being touched"? The ball hits him in the leg and stops dead. No further is there a bounce to it. Watch the way it bounces towards Johnson then watch how it bounces after he "doesn't touch it".

The ball kept rolling after going through his legs, it didn't stop dead. However, the replay is supposed to provide "conclusive evidence" to overturn the call on the field, and that replay was anything but conclusive. Ireland is out to lunch and out to pasture after this year I hope.
I was surprised it was overturned. I didn't see anything conclusive to say he didn't touch it. It looked like he didn't but not enough to overturn the call on the field.

Big win last night. We've moved 5 points up on the 'Riders pending their game this weekend and sent a message throughout the league that we are able to win a game with our QB play alone.

Which brings me to,

- Jarious Jackson. Great game from him! He may have been better statistically last week, but this week I thought he made more big plays when we needed them. The TD run was awesome, the way he was able to locate receivers and spread the ball around and look for different options shows how much confidence he's gained since his first game. The way he scrambled and picked up yards on the ground was also nice to see, I've been waiting to see Jarious run the ball more and he did that last night and proved how effective he can be while doing it. Solid performance from him and I couldn't be happier for the guy. Plus, that spike was beautiful! Nice form Jarious!

- Paris Jackson had a nice night hauling in some tough catches and helping to move the chains.

- Geroy Simon is definitely back! Another 85 yards last night, he's posted great numbers in the last 4 weeks and is getting hot at the right time.

- Josh Boden is looking like a keeper. He caught another 3 balls last night in key situations too. As sad as I was to see Tony Simmons let go, the fact that it's allowed Josh to be a bigger part of the offence is a silver lining for sure.

- Jason Clermont was huge on that TD grab! Talk about concentration!

- It was a rather tough night for Joe. Gotta give props to the Bombers D for stuffing our running game on 1st down and forcing Jarious to beat them with his arm. It was an out-of-character game for Joe but he still managed to stick to his almost guaranteed TD per game pace at a time when we desperately needed the insurrance. Looking forward to seeing him run all over the Eskimos next week!

- Ty Williams was huge last night. He made a number of good tackles, most notably on the goal line stand early in the game.

- The whole front four had one of their best games of the year IMO. Cam Wake was a beast, had one of his best games in the 2nd half and should easily win rookie of the year after this performance if he was still on the bubble before.

- Glad to see Ryan Phillips get that pick late in the game, he had a golden opportunity earlier that he just couldn't hang on to. This guy is a flatout stud, the way he was jumping routes last night was special. You could tell he was glad to have Dante Marsh back in the lineup.

- How good was Bret Anderson?! Loved seeing him boot a couple of FGs for us! This guy is hands down the most versatile player in the CFL.

- Our O-Line was massive last night! The gave JJ great protection all night long. They've really stepped it up in recent weeks which is nice to see.

It wasn't pretty last night, but a win is a win and we moved closer to our first goal of finishing 1st in the West. Great job boys!

Hebert did take a RP penalty on a hit to somebody and IIRC it was the hit being discussed.

Didn't notice the whistle on either of those two passes but Charlton should have been flagged for screening even if JC didn't make the catch.

I have to agree with you on this one Bitz!

Last year, Jiminez had a few unnecessary roughness penalties. This year, he hasn't been ejected from any games, has far fewer penalties, and has played extremely well. My all star vote goes to Jiminez.

I have to agree with you on this one Bitz! I posted this earlier but it got lost in an older thread:

am so sick of hearing all the attention on Rob Murphy. Is he a great player? Absolutely. But the attention on him is far overshadowing Jiminez, who is just as good, if not better as a player than Murph.

Last year, Jiminez had a few unnecessary roughness penalties, and you all attacked him on here and in the media. This year, he hasn't been ejected from any games, has far fewer penalties, and has played extremely well, while Murph gets ejected and fined and you all sing his praises.

Am I happy to have them both? Yup. But do I think Jiminez should be outshadowed by Murph? No way. I won't be surprised at all if Jiminez is back down south soon...

And did anyone else notice that Murph was introduced separately, away from the rest of the oline at the last home game? What was up with that? He's not a qb or a receiver. the online is a unit, and should stay that way. Murph can't do it along, without the other 4 guys next to him.

My all star vote goes to Jiminez.
Mine too....and I didn't attack Jiminez last year for his roughing penalties. In fact I supported him. The reason was simple! We'd had a passive line for too long and a couple of roughing penalties were well the price (which was minor) to change that mindset, not only for our own team but also for other teams in the league...don't mess with us!!

I think Jiminez has been our best offensive lineman this season was Angus Reid, Sherko, and Kelly Bates are also having excellent years. Murphy became my favorite offensive player after Game 2 last season and while Murphy is having a very good season again it is not quite at the standard of last season and Jiminez has gotten even better this year.
