Looking forward to seeing what Buck can do as HC. I know it is the trend with Dinwiddie and Maas calling plays but I think better for Buck to not do both jobs. I wonder if they can come to an arrangement for Jordan Maksymik to remain with the team. He would be just as well off with BC than going to Edm imo
I prefer the HC to be in a position to take an overview leadership role of all facets.
That means you've got to have the coaching talent.
Now if Buck Pierce calls plays, I'm on board as I'm confident he knows the role of a HC having worked with Mike O'Shea.
O'Shea has had that as has Dinwiddie who calls plays (in a briliant ST coach and solid DEF coaches). Mike Miller is his QB whisperer who when absent two years ago led to a Chad Kelly debacle and loss in the East Final. Maas has that with Noel Thorpe and he calls plays.
In Buck's case, if he doesn't influence the offense we're getting more of the same here.
I want to see a Bomber type offense that we didn't see in the GC game with more guys making plays out of the backfield and an ability to run the ball when you want to. Some of these OCs with one run play make it look like they don't believe in that facet of the game.
NEW STAFF? MIXED VIEWS
As to bringing in other coaches versus keeping the same co-ordinators, I've got mixed views here:
1. a new HC who has a specific philosophy often needs to bring in someone who's fully on board with that.
You don't want the old gang telling you like it is around here.
2. Ryan Phillips looked to be an up and comer.
Like Mark Kilam and Brett Monson who've been dumped by the Stamps and BOTH landing on their feet, the question is:
Did they become bad coaches overnight or were there other factors?
> with BC there seems to be other factors last year on DEF and on OFF with VA hurt and a former star QB returning and not able to play at the old level given his NFL journey.
If Buck brings in a clear philosophy for this team and the coaching staff and they have or can get the personnel to make it happen then keep them.
Buck's first tasks:
1. Outline his philosophy and how he wants this team to be structured and perform
2. Get that staff focused on "What will it take/what needs to happen" to build a culture and a team with an OFF, DEF, ST and off field support that can win a Grey Cup?
I suspect from how Jason Maas talks he did the above as he is not the Mess er Maas he was before Montreal.
Underlying theme: More of the same will not get a better result.
If it's just we expect Rourke to shoot the lights out and no balanced attack that excites fans, inspires the OFF and OL's love run plays and same old on DEF and STs (run up the middle, be safe), it's then on Nathan Rourke to get those big plays and 30 points a game.
Stanback got lots of yards but in my mind BC couldn't run the ball when they needed to as the schemes weren't there and DEF all knew what was happening.
