The problem with the play was that Angus Reid snapped the ball too early.
This surprised the QB, caught the receivers flat-footed, which took away the hot route on a cover zero Edmonton was running (I seem to remember they brought six). Also as a result, the interior line didn't pick up the inside pressure which led to the hit on Lulay.
They were six of seven on that drive for 71 yards, averaging about six seconds a play. Why would they not go to the air, especially after the Jackson reception proved they could go deep on them when the Eskimos chose to rush more than five?
The disturbing thing about this play wasn't that Lulay fumbled. It was that another veteran made an elemental mistake at a key time of the game.
That is something we have seen way too much of this year.

Veteran mistakes are a concern.
Lulay looks bad on the play, but there are other factors involved, as you have pointed out. IMO Lulay did about as well as could be expected in the game under the circumstances.
No running game help, for one thing. Mistakes made all over the place. Receivers not really on their game.

Re: Lulays fumble
The Players played horrible I've seen some clumsy football but Travis Lulay is not the answer either he's not that good when he's given the ball he can lead but when he stumbels he really stumbels I'd like to see Jarious Jackson in there if he's ready to go or Casey Printers the players gotta lock them selves in the dressing room and only come out and get rid of the garbage or jitters what ever it maybe I am a fan and these are just what I think I'm no expert

Re: Lulays fumble
What's REALLY odd on the Lulay fumble.......at that point in the game (less than a minute), the score being that close and the closeness of the call being ruled an incomplete pass or a fumble.......why didn't the Replay/Review Committee back in TO review the play, as is their prerogative in the last 3 minutes?.....May be they'd already turned off their TV's an had gone to bed?
The CFL continues to suffer from credibility issues.......and "head scratcher" decisions like this, only add fuel to the fire.

Well, those short yardage issues seem to have been fixed.JohnHenry wrote:Angus Reid also snapped the ball early on a play in the first quarter which almost lead to a fumble. There has been a lack of push in the middle of the OL for several seasons and this could be the root cause of the team's problems on 3rd and 1 and on goal line runs. The team wanted Valli to replace Reid at centre, perhaps they should stick with that plan or trade for an experienced O-L from another team.
As for Lulay, here we go again, the Stamps come to BC, where they have a winning streak, and we are playing poorly on offence to say the least, add in Tsoumpas will be back with the Stamps and it could be a long day at Empire Field.

Nevermind the Stamps this weekend, look at the next three games....Riders, Stamps, and Als. Good luck at winning two of three there. The Lions could easily end up 2 and 7 and looking up at all the CFL teams.

Re: Lulays fumble
Regarding Lulay's fumble....there are a number of factors in play
1. Angus snaps the football too quickly
2. The play call appears to be a quick out and is taken away
3. Edmonton has brought the blitz
4. Lulay doesn't want to take the sack and move them out of field goal range
There was nothing wrong with going with a pass play although, if we had a decent running attack (which Chap has decided he doesn't want to emphasize) then two run plays would have made sense. However, with Jamal only having 15 yards rushing, outside of his one big play, a quick pass play was an acceptable choice.
However, Lulay needed to have a play call, when we know opposition defenses are blitzing, where he could go to a receiver quickly on a hot route, if his first read wasn't there. You want to ensure that Lulay, with his very limited experience, is put in a low risk situation, when we are in field goal range.
A couple of games ago, some posters on this board were raving about Lulay's training camp and potential. Printers was getting critized, although he had played decently in his first game and during the first half of his second, until he got injured. Lulay's inexperience is a factor and he will be a very good quarterback with more playing time. However, I really don't believe it makes a huge difference who we have in at quarterback. We could have Printers, Lulay, Jarious, Buck Pierce back in B.C. and this offence would not be dangerous. While its not possible, even if we had Henry Burris or Anthony Cavillo quarterbacking this offence. they would look bad at times. Its in the nature of the offence...its just so limiting.

Re: Lulays fumble
Angus Reid did NOT snap the ball too early on that play. Watch it again. Lulay, the line and the receivers all react the same. Lulay takes the snap perfectly.
If he said he did he is covering up for the rookie.

The linemen are all trained to go on the snap of the ball regardless if it is early.
