for half time entertainment
all the rowds and drunks and who ever else is feeling tough
go down to the field and have a brawl

Bighill is Badass
IIRC, I think part of this is a preseason thing. I remember other preseason games being like this too. I mean this kinda stuff happens at games throughout the season but as I said last night on another thread, the yahoo index does seem to rise for the preseason game. I think a lot of it is the 'freebie' tickets that come with the season ticket packages and understaffing of security (don't know why on that one ). I sit on the side of the guy who 'tried' to take out the ref & it really was amazing how much of an effort was needed to get the lone security on that side to come help. She was just oblivous!

Daved Benefield is right, though. Although they are everywhere, Vancouver does seem to have a high per capita ratio of drunken goofballs. For the life of me, I have no idea why, but I just know that going to a sporting event in Vancouver gives one a better chance of seeing fights and generally moronic behaviour than in other cities.

This Yahooism is a disgrace - and an embarrassment, but at least it's not quite as digusting as a story I recall from this past January's college bowl season. I recall reading (and there was photogrphic evidence -yecch) at the Gator Bowl between West Virginia and Georgia Tech of a WV "fan" going into a GT section where there were some seats open, dropping trou and taking a dump !!!
How drunk/subhuman do you have to be to think that one up?

Especially since they could get hosed at home for a LOT less...darnellclash wrote:And I agree that most of this is started by young kids who are there for more of a drinking event rather than the love of the game.

Reminds me of a game I was at a few years ago... apparently they had given out a ton of preseason tickets to various high schools, so a couple of lower sections were just packed with youngsters, very few of whom were paying attention to the game (although I think very few of them were drinking; if they were, they probably brought their own).notahomer wrote:IIRC, I think part of this is a preseason thing. At some point, some clown thought it would be a good idea to jump down onto the field and run around... he got a big cheer from the crowd when he touched down and took off. Didn't take long for the security guys to start after him, and that got a cheer... another cheer as he evaded them... and a HUGE cheer when they finally tackled the guy and hauled him off.
That seemed to inspire several more, and after every two or three plays, someone else would jump onto the field and grind things to a halt until he was taken off... they'd still get the odd cheers, but I think most people were getting pretty tired of it by then.
Finally one roid monkey had a good run... ran up to the cheerleaders, who promptly all turned their backs on him... he was keeping a good lead on the security guys, who by this time I imagine were getting pretty worn out. The players were obviously getting pretty sick of the antics as well, as they'd all just stand on the field with their backs to the action... until this last goof cut a little to close to them, and one stuck out an arm, clotheslined the guy, and brought him down HARD. THAT got the biggest cheer of the night... buddy was escorted off the field but a hefty number of security and police, and that was pretty much the end of that particular idiocy.
I believe it was right after that, that the $1000 fine and lifetime ban was instituted for anyone jumping on the field during a game...

You don't need to go to a sporting event to see these morons. Fireworks display, nightclubs etc.Lionut wrote:Daved Benefield is right, though. There are many BC Place Security that work for both Orca Bay (GM Place) and BC Place so they were short that night due to the Gwen Stefani concert as many regular memebers of Security were working the concert.B.C.FAN wrote:I didn't notice any fights in the stands but I did notice a lack of security in the stands and on the field. The timekeeper had to go over and practically drag the only security guard on the field toward the Riders bench when the yahoo was tackled by the Rider players.
I remember a few years ago when the crowds starting coming back at BC Place, there was a while when it seemed like fans were running on the field ever 5 minutes. It was getting a lot of press and Wally Buono mentioned that they had the same problem back in the day when he played for the Als at the Big O in front of crowds in excess of 60,000. He said they solved the problem by having the local police on the sidelines with a police dog. There would be no fun in getting chased down by a German Shepherd in front of a studium full of people. The presence of a police dog alone would be deterrent enough.Soundy wrote:Reminds me of a game I was at a few years ago... apparently they had given out a ton of preseason tickets to various high schools, so a couple of lower sections were just packed with youngsters, very few of whom were paying attention to the game (although I think very few of them were drinking; if they were, they probably brought their own).notahomer wrote:IIRC, I think part of this is a preseason thing. The strong-arm police responses might seem nice in terms of deterence - I personally would be fine if they taser'ed anyone running onto the field, or for that matter just shot them dead right on the sideline. Certainly would deter the next guy, right? Only unfortunate problem is police are held accountable to appropriate level of force for the threat. While a yahoo running around on the field is annoying, it's not particularly threatening to anyone's safety. So it basically rules out taser, police dog, clubsticks, etc., unless the guy resists an officer, which they never do.

Yeah, the thing is, beer-fueled bravado tends to forget about most kinds of deterrents, like fines, bans, tasers... things that are not visible or immediately tangible.
Have a cop hanging out on the sidelines with a dog, however... that's a VISIBLE deterrent. Even among the most bullheaded booze clowns, most will think twice about hopping the railing if they see the dog perched there below.
And no, it's not particularly threatening safety... unless the mook lands wrong and breaks a leg... or tackles someone on the sideline and injures him... or worse yet lands ON someone on the sidelines. And all it takes is one idiot jumping over, breaking his own fool leg, and then suing the team, the venue, the beer vendor, and anyone else in sight, into oblivion.

I just want to say that the Lions are trying to do thier part by promoting the be a fan not a fool thing. If you are sitting near or see someone drunk or bothering you you can call a number or talk to an usher. I have been to most games the last few years and never seen anyone use this. We as fans should do our part and use what the lions have offered. It would help to prevent fights more then the jumping on the field but it's a start.

CTV tonight reports that the guy in question is 22 years old and is due in court on June 29th.
