Other than Stanback offence was abysmal.
Re: Lions at Stampeders July 21st, 2024
They deserved to lose this one. Offense was off all game

It must be really hard to just pick up a football on a fumble.

Man, that was painful to watch. We got beat on all facets in this game, including being out-coached. Calgary had a good plan, and our adjustments/response was meek. Oh well, go watch the tape and get better during the bye week.

That was a game of missed opportunities in all facets of the game. The Lions had lots of chances to win it but they kept shooting themselves in the foot with overthrows, penalties and turnovers. Give the Stamps credit. They played hard and made plays when they had to, especially in converting first downs in the dying minutes.
The Lions go into the bye week knowing they have to be better. I hope that motivates them.

A loss could be a good thing. Hope the Lions learn something from this fiasco

If he is not there already, in a word yes.Robbie wrote: Sun Jul 21, 2024 6:02 pm Congratulations to Wally Buono for being inducted into the Calgary Stampeders Wall of Fame as a builder.
That said, should he also get inducted into the BC Lions Wall of Fame as well?
Surprised that they call their former GM and HC a builder as I always thought meant those in other club positions.
Reflecting on what he did in two locations (Calgary, then BC) he is right on what he achieved with the right culture and template in both franchises.

Oh those little things.
VA forces an interception to deny a sure Whyte field goal at halftime.
A brain-fart offiside extends a 3rd Qtr Calgary drive and they score.
VA forcing endless long passes while the TV crew talked about the tricky wind.
Abandoning Stanback when he was purring.
Surrendering a First Down on 2nd and 18.
NOT grabbing a loose fumble - etc, etc, etc, etc.
Like someone else posted, a humbling loss here might be the best wake-up call for the rest of the season. The Lions just weren't ready to win today. Blech!

If that wasn't Calgary's best game in the last several years I can't think of an another one where they were physically dominant and played effectively.
Some BC coaching decisons were head scratchers including giving up on the run game and not giving VA whose first half hits will take the bye to heal some help both in better protection and with the play calling. Not sure why Maksymic didn't adjust given the wind and VA not able to hit REC.
Late in the game rushing 3 with Calgary 2 and 18 was odd as Maier was successfully targeting the soft coverage between the LBs and the deep coveragae and ergo, a first down at the first down marker.
When Perkins was struggling and taking penalties not sure why that wasn't immediately targeted for a fix.
BC with the big hit by Evans early on and some others were on DEF and ST seemed to want to send Calgary a message and Calgary responded to the challenge with their most physical game of the season.

Lions didn't seem to have any focus. Whats with all the long passes when the wind was a problem?
Lee had a good game; wish I could say the same for many of his teammates.
In the future: more Stanback, please.

Early in the game VA came to the sidelines holding his chest after taking a shot. He paced around for a bit before finally going to the bench and on the Ipad. Not sure if that set the stage for so many poorly thrown balls but it definitely rattled him.
The Lions need their full arsenal of receivers back. Hollins a complete non factor with 1 catch and 4 targets. Now you are down to McInnis and 3 rookies including one that was playing junior football in Victoria last season. Calgary was playing a lot of zone and dropping their linebackers taking away his quick first reads. That's where Hatcher and Cottoy are effective of finding and sitting in those soft spots.
That said a complete injustice Stanback finished with just 9 carries despite a 7 yards average. I guess it's just not in BC's DNA to pound him 20 times even though it was a one possession game from nearly start to finish.
On one drive midway thru the 4th quarter we got the PI call against McInnis that Calgary unsuccessfully challenged. Stanback rips off a 5 yd run on 1st down and then VA misses Eberhardt on a deep ball. We settle for the Whyte FG but why not run Stanback again there?
Next series we get to the Calgary 50 on a McInnis catch and he goes to him again with the throw slightly behind resulting in an INT. We were almost in FG range to take the lead and not even a 1st down handoff to Stanback with just over 3 min to play.
A bye week to re-group then a good test for this offence going into Winnipeg against what will be a desperate Bombers team. Hopefully with Hatcher and Cottoy back. Will be interesting see what the o-line looks like too.
Nice to see Teuhema with a long overdue breakout game to finish with a couple of sacks. Phillips was incensed with the key 18 yd completion to Barnes to essentially seal the win. That shouldn't happen when you are dropping 9 on 2nd and 17.
