I don't know if it deserves its own thread. It's almost like a free agent signing.

BC has signed their 2021 1st rd pick (4th overall) DL Daniel Joseph.

Interesting: I wondered if he would eventually show-up to the Lions or anywhere in the CFL.

Pretty crowded Canadian contingent at DE; IF Betts returns, with Menard, Archibald, and last year's draft pick Bemiy (could do some DT duty as well; as can Menard)

You've been waiting for this one with baited breath since he was drafted.

He could soften the blow if they lose Betts assuming the talent and desire is there. Bemiy is more suited to interior than as an edge rusher. He has somewhat of a freakish body type. He's playing at 270 but could easily add another 10+ and carry it no problems. Archibald is a ST stud who could have a long career whether he gets significant reps on D or not.

I haven't heard it anywhere and probably not much chance of it happening but..... Chris Streveler could be an interesting piece to add to the Lions O. Believe I saw he was recently clocked running 21 mph. Struck me as a faster than average type number. He wouldn't hurt the short yardage team.

And the Lions spending spree on their key receivers concludes with a new 3-year contract for Jevon Cottoy. Farhan tweeted yesterday his new deal is north of $200,000 per season.

A very productive week for Mr. McElvoy and Mr. Campbell.

I just posted in the Rhymes Leaving thread that reading between the lines results in a conclusion that Lions are going to re-sign Cottoy......things are moving quickly and I was thinking that maybe the Lions should first re-sign Cottoy to big $ before releasing Rhymes and it now looks like they did so I guess the Lions are way ahead of me. :beauty:

Where are the Lions at QB as the mix last year never had a great feel to it and with Dane Evans gone, there needs to be something in the event of injury.
Possibly an eye at the FA QBs upcoming or a castaway from Ottawa like Pigrome maybe haha. That QB roster in the nation's capital is crowded.

The Bombers traded Dru Brown pre-FA date for a 5th Rd Ottawa pick in 2024 and signed Eric Barriere.
This guy might be a keeper in the Peg. https://twitter.com/eb3__?lang=en

During his (Barriere) preparations, he talked with and received advice from former Eagles-turned-pro Nsimba Webster and Vernon Adams, Jr.
Among the records Barriere broke at Eastern was the Big Sky career yardage record held by EWU’s Matt Nichols, who played two preseason games with the Dallas Cowboys in 2010 before playing nine seasons in the CFL from 2011-21.

Even if the NFL doesn’t pan out, the two-time Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year would almost certainly get an opportunity in the Canadian Football League, where a larger playing field and fewer downs would be advantageous for Barriere’s strong arm and accuracy.

As of now, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers own his rights, and Barriere could continue the successful pipeline of former EWU quarterbacks into the CFL, starting with Rick Worman in the 1980s and continuing with recent stars Bo Levi Mitchell, Vernon Adams Jr. and Nichols.

“Hopefully he gets the opportunity to get on an NFL roster and play in some preseason games,” says Nichols, who has played in the CFL for Edmonton, Winnipeg and Ottawa.

“Obviously, I think the CFL is incredible and is a great brand of football,” he continued. “He should set his sights on the NFL for as long as he can, but I think there is a big future for him in the CFL — especially with the equity EWU has in the league. I think he could go up there and be great.”

Barriere appreciates the backup plan. But he wonders, alongside his coach and so many Eastern supporters, why EWU quarterbacks have so often been bypassed by the NFL: “I don’t get it,” he says. “I don’t know why they end up in the CFL.”

Not sure Chris Streveler will do anything before seeing out his NFL options. He seems okay with bouncing around the NFL which has assumedly paid him okay.

Interesting what will happen with Streveler. If he comes back north he probably is looking for the shortest path to competing for starter. Most seem to think Winnipeg is the most likely destination. However Collaros still has 2 more years on his deal. There won't an opening for a starter in Winnipeg until 2026 at earliest. The Brown trade combined with the others they have (Crum, Adams, Masoli, Pigrome and Dunniway) says there's nothing in Ottawa for Streveler. There is no place in the CFL who can offer him a situation to compete to start in 2024. A Dane Evans type contract is the best he could hope for but would that be enough for him?

Pigrome? Somebody on RF coined the term Pigromania as a contingent there seem to be fascinated with him because he made a few big plays in preseason last year. His college stats were nothing to write home about. They were very meh with a 57% completion rate. At only 5'9 and 209 he's built more like a tailback. His ceiling seems to be that of a short yardage specialist. Having said that I was in the stands in Ottawa last year when Hamilton was visiting. At one point Ottawa was in 1st and goal from the Hamilton 1. Pigrome took 3 cracks from the 1 and didn't score. He would punch one through later on in the game.

The EE/Jonestown have just signed former Colarado star QB Steven Montez (bit of NFL camp experience) - pretty impressive NCAA ball resume that Jones would be swooning over.

Makes sense for Jones to have plenty of TC competition at the key position in his desperate to win coming season, even with vet MBT signed; also still has Doege (i think?) who he turned to as # 2 last season.

Wonder if Tre Ford could be discarded by Jones there soon? Though Ford could stick it out as a # 2 or 3 and hope for another shot - if MBT falters or get injured - not sure he has much other choice if he's to be kept in the QB loop there? Not sure there is another CFL landing spot for Ford; somebody would likely pick him up if he is just cut (don't see that happening); but what other CFL team would be willing to offer much in trade (if Jones was so inclined and wanted to rid himself of the potential nuisance of CFL media or local yokel fans clamoring to give Ford a shot if they don't win some out of the gate?)

Strevler going to his old CFL team with Dru Brown out of the way makes most sense for him - can't think of another CFL team entertaining him as a competitor for the #1 job - outside of possibly the Stumps ?

Not sure if this should be another FA thread for the CFL vs. just the Lions FAs.

I wonder if Streveler is too pricey for the CFL as Hambone and others note, he's not likely to win a starting job easily or quickly.

Apparently (on Twitter) someone is saying that Schoen and Brown are/were room mates and tight.
Would Schoen want to leave a good situation with a known QB and an offense where he gets the ball for Redblacks where it's unknown what kind of team they'll have?

For what it is worth Farhan tweeted last night the Lions have made an offer to Streveler. He definitely can serve the purpose of back-up and short yardage but is he content being a #2 to VA and at what price? We just spent at least $650,000 per season on our top 3 receivers and still have some key FAs left starting with Betts.

Farhan also made it sound like the Bombers losing Schoen to FA is a foregone conclusion. B.C.'s deal with Hollins ($220,000/$230,000) surely pushed the starting point on offers to $250,000 minimum. He mentioned Hamilton, Montreal or the Riders as landing spots.

Wouldn't Strevler make more money and be a starter in the USFL vs a CFL backup?

Interesting to hear the Lions have shown interest in Streveler.

Not only is it a good fit for the Lions imo but it takes away from the Bombers and their cold weather game planning. He would be a great change of pace guy to go with Vernon Adams. Better passer than he gets credit for as well because everyone plays closer to the line when he is in the game. Maybe time to ask V.A. to re-neg on paper.

I can't see how Winnipeg can pay him even $250,000 which I think where the Lions should be. Maybe a hand with a start on a post career job at the stock exchange if need be.
