Season opener - BC @ Calgary
Moderator: Team Captains
Good solid win, importantly against a division rival (in what could be a very tight western division this year). Lot’s to work on, and special teams still not where it needs to be for a contender, but a good base to build from.

The new stats package is an embarrassment. If the Genius system isn’t operational by the start of the season (it’s not), give us the old live interactive game stats and play by play.

Had to laugh at the league’s Top 50 players of 2023 segment.
10 Stamps including Meier & 4 Lions (Rhymes, Whitehead, Peters & Lee).
Only the Bombers had more with 12 yet Lions just keep beating the Stamps. That’s 4 wins in last 5 meetings including all three at McMahon.

This is a rebuilding year in Calgary. They have the youngest team with the fewest CFL starts. Their coaching staff does a good job but they have an uphill battle ahead of them.SammyGreene wrote: ↑Thu Jun 08, 2023 9:42 pmHad to laugh at the league’s Top 50 players of 2023 segment.

Final stats here in awful PDF format. They confirm what I thought. Rhymes caught a pass on the Lions' first offensive play of the game, when he was designated as a non-starter. He finished with 8 catches for 100 yards and 2 TDs. I'm just trying to understand the new designated nationalized American rule.

Loved seeing Dickinson explode after Adam’s TD run with the two penalties, Moxey getting the wrath being called off the field on the extra point kick.
Still I think that those penalties don’t really hurt the Stamps in this case. 25 yards did give the Lions a single point off the KO. I’d be in favour of applying one penalty on the Stamps possession after yards gained.
Imagine had VA been hurt on that contact, complete game change potential at a one point cost.

Totally agree. Looks like it was developed by a student. (with all due respect to students)B.C.FAN wrote: ↑Thu Jun 08, 2023 9:19 pmThe new stats package is an embarrassment. Worked fine for me in game. Play feature is good, it’s really quick vs old system. Stats recalculate quickly too.

It was not a totally purrfect game for the season opener but I sure liked a few things that look to make this team exciting in all phases of the game.
Other than Couture foolishly negating the QB hit call by retaliating, the offence looked totally focused and more mature than at times last year celebrating every freaking good play - even Lucky Whitehead seemed fully dialed in. This corresponded in the first TD with total focus and a ton of success as players were ready for a quick play call and ball in play.
I liked VA's leadership and command of the team and his play.
Liked how the offence played quickly on that opening drive. It helped to avoid Stamps adjusting in mid-series and the DEF was kept guessing on where the ball was going even when Rhymes was the target. Rhymes looked twice including a drop of the ball he had to jump for that he was not trying to catch with his body.
Liked the play calling and the mix especially early in the game.
Liked the run calls and some of the plays they used until the final two minutes when it seemed to go a bit conservative.
RB had a great game.
OL must have graded out great.
DEF - looked very good and an upgrade in team play over last year. Only negatives were the dropped sure INT and the poor decision on the INT they got to lateral it for a turnover. I don't mind laterals but there it was totally not a good decision and they were winning so it was not a last play of the half or game where you can go for broke.
STs weren't purrfect but it was fun to watch as they seemed less predictable than in other years.
One game is not a season but this is looking like a fun team to watch if they keep this up.

Was Siddiq dressed last night? Doesn’t show up in any stats. Trying to figure out who would be dropped from the game day roster once Hatcher returns.
Would they dress eight receivers with Rhymes, Hollins, Whitehead, Cottoy, McInnis Williams Petermann as well?

Second unit guys hardly played, except for that touchdown drive by Calgary. Offense moved the ball with long drives, and Calgary had so many 3 and outs.SammyGreene wrote: ↑Fri Jun 09, 2023 7:32 amWas Siddiq dressed last night? Doesn’t show up in any stats. Petterman out, unless they want him for specials.

All it means is you can go down by one cdn on offense. It’s just flexibility. BC used it well on first drive bringing terry Williams in sets creating mismatches. Then lucky got hurt they couldn’t use it any more, cause terry was only American backup.B.C.FAN wrote: ↑Thu Jun 08, 2023 9:58 pmFinal stats here in awful PDF format. They confirm what I thought. On defense, Calgary was really attacking lokombo. Who had a tough night despite 8 tackles. Thats where you will see the sets with extra American will be on D. If they can find a kinda second rugumba on other side with new hash marks.
