sj-roc wrote:Just had a look at sales for the Rider game a week from today... will be in tough to crack 30k. I'd say less than 500 tickets have been sold from the extra ~5k seating opened up specifically for this game (upper deck behind visitors' bench). Looks like at most 28k sold at this point. We'll prob lead the league's tv ratings for the week again, but these days even the Riders aren't much of a draw into the building for a summer 4pm kickoff on a Sunday. Last time we had <30k for a reg season Riders visit to BCP was 2006:

Fri, Jun 16, 2006....SSK 28 @ BC 45....27,539
Fri, Jul 14, 2006.....SSK 29 @ BC 28....28,513
Thu, Aug 02, 2007..SSK 21 @ BC 9......31,858
Fri, Jul 04, 2008.....SSK 26 @ BC 16....33,813
Sat, Sep 13, 2008...SSK 23 @ BC 28....38,608
Fri, Aug 07, 2009....SSK 20 @ BC 35....30,117
Fri, Oct 02, 2009.....SSK 16 @ BC 19...31,958
Sun, Aug 19, 2012...SSK 5 @ BC 25.....34,343
Sat, Nov 03, 2012...SSK 6 @ BC 17......36,357
Fri, Oct 04, 2013....SSK 31 @ BC 17....37,312

Unless there's a huge surge in sales the next 7 days, it seems it was hardly worth the added security and concession labour costs to open the extra seating.
Not sure why the Lions would open up the other visitors of the upper deck well before there was even 50 percent sold on the home side. Better marketing to say additional sections are being opened to accommodate the ticket demand to at least create a buzz. If I remember, Ackles always wanted so many tickets sold a week in advance before they would proceed with more sections.

Already heard in the pre-game yesterday about a "big crowd" for this coming Sunday. Sure hope some ridiculous numbers aren't tossed around like we have seen so many times in the past.

As Skulsky explained it on radio recently, the normal practice would be to open a section at a time in the west end zone of the upper deck. Those are lower-priced tickets. They decided to open the visitor's sideline of the upper deck instead so the additional fans would be able to buy premium sideline seats (more $$$$ from Rider fans). The strategy seems to be working. The higher-priced seats in the lower rows of the visitor's sideline ($90) are outselling the middle rows ($72) and higher rows ($53).

From what I see looks like nothing was sold today

Heard on 1040 that the Riders took out an ad at BC Place that "green is the new orange". They'll be out in force on Sunday.

If green is the new orange and you are wearing green, then aren't you then supporting orange? :dizzy:

I always thank the fans wearing green for buying tickets and supporting the Lions with their wallets.

That is a good sign, nice to hear 1040 is trying to really hype this up , reminds me of the mid 80's when the bombers came here the hype was unreal all week which Bc place ended up selling out before the weekend.

I think the plaid is a good accent considering what these signature jerseys are going for, BUT I don't think the Redblacks logo looks good as the front crest.

Reminds me of the Rider game 2 years ago. My buddy brought his kid Chris who was about 20 to the game. We're standing in the concourse 40 minutes before game time. I'm looking at Chris' green t-shirt and I ask him "Hey Chris. Who's BC playing today?" He starts to answer "the Riders" quickly followed by "Holy Crap!" when it clicks in that he's wearing green. He makes a beeline to the nearest souvenir stand to buy a Lions shirt then to the can to change into it.

Re: All things Lions Marketing/Promotions 2015

I commend Skulsky for trying to maximize ticket revenue by opening up more platinum seats on the visitors side of the upper deck but given advance sales so far I don't think he would do it again. Maybe 500 of the 5,000 additional seats have sold so far (sj roc is better at these estimates than me) while about 50 percent of the regular upper deck seats on the home side remain unsold. Even plenty available in the family and gemstone sections. Heck, right now I would take the lower bowl completely full and there still is work to do to accomplish that.
Would have to think a 7 pm Saturday night kickoff would have been more appealing but this isn't a bad way to end a weekend and I can see why TSN like these Sunday night games (back east) until the NFL season starts.

That said, as someone who bleeds orange and black, can't wait for this game!

I just had a look since you posted... yeah, it's still looking pretty empty up there in the extras; I'd say def under 1000 sold, 700 max. I think if they'd reached 30k sold by now they'd have trumpeted this in a press release or tweet or something. Maybe later today or tomorrow?

I'm gonna say there's about 1500 tix left (of about 27,100) in the lower bowl (those singles add up; behind the visitors' bench alone, there's ~200). That makes 25.6 + 2.5 (your 50%) + 0.7 = 28.8k right now. Although it's great for people in outlying areas who understandably have a tough time attending 7pm starts, I agree that overall, the game's timing is def not helping. A friend of mine (who is not a football fan) invited me to a BBQ for Sunday afternoon and I have to wonder if more folks are thinking along those lines: enjoying a weekend afternoon of (hopefully) sunshine outdoors as the summer winds down.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

That is what is happening this game should not have been played until after September, and on a Sat eve.

The CFL schedule this year is catered mostly for TV, not to sell tickets to the games. The 4:00 pm Saturday starts and other weird game times are coming straight out of TSN's office. TV might be the future for the CFL, but in the present CFL teams will earn 2 X as much from ticket sales, than the new TV contract (or at least they should have if attendance hadn't dropped across the league this year.)

Here's a good deal for "Family Day" in Edmonton:

Join us for #Esks Family Day on Aug 23 at 2pm
For just $99 you get:
4 seats in the Knothole Section
4 hot dogs
4 soft drinks
Call 448-ESKS

(I assume the Lions do something similar)
