Lions @ Eskimos, Game Day Thread, September 22

Is Coach Bene renewing his vows before the game or what?

Kidding aside, I read something before the start of the season about the coach(es) wearing a suit for one game this year. Not sure why though. Probably better to have the guys play in their 60's road unis if you're going to do a "throwback" theme like wearing suits on the sidelines. Otherwise it loses its context.

Lions will be facing a fired up Edmonton team this afternoon after the shellacking they took last weekend. They better be ready to go on the opening whistle.

I think this game has the potential to be a close one.

The Eskimos record could be 7 and 4 with a couple of better FG attempts by Shaw.

The defence has been very good.

They have talent. They have a potentially strong running game.

Jyles has had good games in the past, but has struggled with inconsistency.

Commonwealth has not been the easiest place for visiting teams to win.
...........

With a team showing some vulnerability as the Schmos have, they could come unraveled if things go badly. But they will be highly motivated at the start. I expect them to bring their A game.

If we play well, play hard, and play smart, I expect us to prevail.

There's a direct correlation between the importance of the game and Kavis Reed's over-the-top pregame speech. Watch for this one to be off-the-charts hokey. I wonder what the over/under is for the eye-rolling number of times he refers to either "Eskimo legends" or the "Eskimo way?"

I laughed when I read Fred Stamps' comment that Kavis Reed "got his yelling out early in the week." Really? I don't think Reed is ever finished yelling.

Pro players shouldn't need to be yelled at to get motivated. Eventually they'll tune out a coach who is so over-the-top in their face. I think K. Reed's act will soon wear thin in Edm (and he can take E.T. with him).

It won't be easy for the Esks to beat B.C. Jyles will have to consistently move the offence to keep Lulay off the field. The Esks need to play mistake-free football and probably score on defence or ST to better the Lions. If the Esks offence falters, they'll have no hope today. :ref:

I think it will be a close game ending in a Lions win (under 5 points). However, if the Lions win big, I think it will be due to a worn out Eskimo defence. The offence of the Esks is a large part of why they are struggling as a team, IMO....

Want to say a lot of things about how well the team has adjusted to any/all adversity so far this season

Want to give some personal acolades, but can't for fear of jinxing them...so I'll just say don't look back!

Tonight we may gain back a measure of equity on our season's record against "the evil empire"(compliments to you Blitz)

Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.
