Re: CFL Games of October 21 and 22

Shocking pink. Quite a surprise to see it. Took me back a bit at first. But it is all in a good cause. If mesomorphic football players can wear it, it is OK with me.

The Argonauts are a sad sack organization. Too much "NFL envy" in that town. Too much wannabe big time. If Braley can bring that franchise back to life that will be one huge accomplishment. And if he does that, we will know that the CFL is very, very alive and well and living in Toronto.

No surprises so far. Aside from Edmonton letting the hapless Argos back into the game.

And having seen some more of Drew Tate now, I acknowledge that The Pauser might be right. Tate could be a good one. Poor old Henry, so forlorn on the bench. I wonder if he can keep all the anguish in for the rest of the year. Somehow I think not.

It's one thing to tarp off the upper deck seats, but the Argos have tarps over seats in the first few rows of the lower deck. On TV you get a lot of shots were you don't see any fans, just tarps. Makes the place look completely empty.

The Argos really screwed themselves by not working out something to share a smaller outdoor stadium.

Lowell Ullrich took in Friday's Argo game as a spectator and came away with positive impressions of the fan experience at Rogers Centre:
Taking in an Argos game with no writing assignment on the line, as was done for the Edmonton-Toronto contest Friday, gives a person a whole different perspective than when you’re studying a game for writing purposes. We’re not usually connoisseurs of game presentation, but you can’t fault what the Argos are doing once people get to the Rogers Centre.
The Lions can definitely take notes, from how the giant scoreboard is being used for both entertainment and information, right down to the sponsors to whom they’ve sold ads. The problem, of course, is the fact the team sucks. No amount of marketing replaces winning.

I would prefer the CFL to innovate, not look like "Johnny come lately's." I believe there's 'pink fatigue' out there. Too many well meaning companies have been guilted into promoting this cause (lest they appear insensitive and non-caring) which has led to this over-the-top ubiquity of the colour pink which in turn (ironically enough), has diminished its effectiveness.

Pick a cause. Pick a week. Have each player wear a wristband to promote it, and leave it at that. Last year, players weren't allowed to don pink accessories for games. Now that the league has embraced it, they've gone completely overboard IMO (although if I were in charge of CFL Marketing, I'd call the campaign "Tackled Pink" - a play on words for "tickled pink").

Watching the start of the Bombers-Alouettes game. I have to admit all the different ways of wearing pink looks sloppy. Some with tape on the shoes. Some with just wristbands. One defender with pink tape around just his socks. Some with pink tape on their gloves.

It looks like a rag tag army.

It is probably better if the pink is worn in a uniform way. Let's say the league announces we will wear pink wristbands, optional pink mouth guards, but in no other way. No pink shoes. Or the league could announce "pink emblems on helmets."

Whatever they decide should be uniform. Support the pink, but, since this is football, do it in a uniform way.

Uniform.
..........

I remember when Bud Grant went to Minnesota from Winnipeg. Someone asked about how come his team looked so good in team photos. He said that some teams were casual about it. He had it all planned. This guy here. That guy there, et cetera. How to look. How to pose. Spacing. They actually practiced/rehearsed it. And it looked professional. Not sloppy.

Uniform

It's raising awareness for cancer. NFL does it the same way. I'm fine with whatever they wanna do.

We know it is raising awareness for cancer research. And we support that.

We can have different opinions on how to present your support. And actually, I am OK with the casual, varied look of it too. I don't mind Rag Tag style: jeans and T-shirt.

Bombers off to a great start. Up 8 - 0. Already sacked Calvillo once. Lots of pressure. Knocked Calvillo down on his first pass attempt.

8 - 6 now. And Sean Whyte looks very relaxed and efficient. Just like his mentor, Paul McCallum.

Winnipeg has totally blown this second quarter with the wind. They had Montreal pinned deep for much of it, but have only managed to score 2 points, while giving up more points to the Als.

OMG this Winnipeg team is crapping the bed before our very eyes... looks like Hamilton will have extra incentive tonight as second place is still possible, meanwhile Calgary is going to get back to back games against teams with nothing to play for. :bang:

What a finish ! 16 Bomber points in the 4th quarter including a last minute touchdown for a 26-25 win.

The Als will now be motivated to win the next two games against Calgary and B.C. (But why does the league schedule them to play two games outside the division at the end of the season?)

I missed all but the last 48 seconds of this one so I'll have to watch a replay when it airs on TSN2.
