Yeah, that is a bizarre rule for sure...
One of those things that makes the CFL OUR game, I guess!

Re: Paul McCallum asks for a trade
In the 2006 western final we used all three QBs on one drive. At the end of the 1st quarter, beginning of the second we rotated through DD, BP, and JJ (who snuck for a first down) then went back to DD and again brought in BP for short yardage. None of the QBs were hurt on any of those plays. If the rule is as you say, we would have had to stick with JJ from moment he was sent in to sneak for that first down.JohnHenry wrote:[
The salient point is while the 1st and 2nd QB's can be exchanged with one another during the game, there are restrictions on the 3rd stringer...like he can't be replaced by another QB unless he's injured, ect. So by not allowing the 3rd stringer to punt, teams still wanting to cheat will have to name their punter as the No. 2 QB...then if their starting QB got injured, they would be forced to insert their 3rd stringer (as No. 2 was actually the punter). As No. 3 QB, he would be forced to finish the game and could not be replaced. Cheating teams will not want to take that risk, so that's why 3rd string QB's can't punt.
Just in case anyone thinks this is a crazy or bush league rule, even the vaunted NFL has similar QB insertion rules...so it must be ok?

Re: Paul McCallum asks for a trade
from the CFL rule book:
Article 5 – Designated Quarterback
Prior to the game, a team is required to designate three players who shall be permitted
to alternate for each other during the game at the quarterback position exclusively.
Not more than one such player may be in the game at any time and none of the three
can enter the game as a member of Team B.
PENALTY: L25 PLS DR or L25 PBD or option
NOTE: For the purposes of this Article 5, the duties of the quarterback position may
include punting, place kicking and kicking off. If a team designates three quarterbacks
for a game, the player designated as the third quarterback shall not be eligible for
kicking duties.

Release - That would be obvious.Blue In BC wrote:Lions4ever wrote:Well, LF, obviously I think both you and Rammer are completely wrong, but is just as obvious that this is the way the team is going. By the same token, as a fan, I don't have to like it - and I don't. Whyte should stay on the roster and McCallum should be reinstated forthwith.
Did you consider that might require another player to be released to make room and to stay under the SMS?
SMS - I don't know what that is and I don't care.

Actually, if you have my sister-in-law's cake, it's basically inedible anyway.

No offense, but given your statement you can't really be taken seriously about roster moves. There are restrictions around player moment and costs, and its paramount to talent factors in making decisions.Lions4ever wrote: SMS - I don't know what that is and I don't care.

And as a guy who has followed this team on a game-in-game-out basis since 1969 I don't need to hear any of this from you - no offense.

Re: Paul McCallum asks for a trade
My view on this topic was that McCallum has proven to be a clutch kicker for our Leos, his stats are better than Whytes, and he is being paid good coin for his experience and ability to perform under pressure.
Looks like Wally may be reconsidering his thoughts on McCallum after Whyt'es two misses on Friday night against the Riders. Wally should reinsert McCallum and cut him in the off-season.
Players and coaches want to win now and McCallum is the guy I want kicking the football in a clutch situation in a playoff game this year. Whyte has gained some valuable experience to provide a base for him becoming our starting kicker for 2010.

Re: Paul McCallum asks for a trade
Wasn't Paul 1 for three prior to going out with an injury? I do agree he has been pretty solid for us, but I also remember Saskatchewan manuregate so he is not purrfect. I figure it will come down to can we live with Whyte as our kicker and carry another player or do we need McCallum back at the expense of losing depth somewhere else.Blitz wrote:My view on this topic was that McCallum has proven to be a clutch kicker for our Leos, his stats are better than Whytes, and he is being paid good coin for his experience and ability to perform under pressure.

Given McCallum is already on the 45-man roster collecting a salary north of $100,000 for the season, this should almost be a no brainer. He would be highly motivated given his career is on the line as he audtions for a new team in 2010. Given Whyte has struggled of late, especially on Friday night, it doesn't set up well given the conditions he is going to be kicking in for the next three games.
We have been damn lucky for a long time relying on one Canadian born kicker to handle all the duties — to free up a roster spot. Whyte has done a solid job in his rookie season with such a workload but it's time to go back to the veteran with so much on the line.

Although I'd like to point out, it isn't as if McCallum was kicking all that well prior to getting hurt. I think he was something like 33% on field goals? Albeit it was only a small sample size...SammyGreene wrote:![]()
