Re: Video: Bombers Zone Blocking vs Unprepared Lions Defence

Whose philosophy runs the defence of the Lions?

Hypothetical ... let's imagine that the Defensive coordinator says to his conservative Head Coach:

DC: "I'd like to put 8 men at the LOS when Bishop goes behind centre. We could still drop 3 or even 4 of them back into coverage. Also, we could blitz from there. The O Line would not know who to block or how to set up their combo chip blocks at the point of attack."

HC: "No, we cannot gamble like that. Instead we'll put 4 men on the line, in position and have them hold their gaps."

DC: "How about some run blitzes with the LBs?"

HC: "No, we can't afford to vacate the middle of the field."

DC: "How about if we mix things up a bit by having our 4 D Linemen slant hard into the gaps on some plays?"

HC: ''If we did that they would be out of position." [Best to keep them in position I suppose. Makes it easier for the Bombers to find them for their zone blocks]

.................................

This is not on the players. This is putting a very simple, predictable scheme out there against a formidable zone blocking scheme. Same lineup. Same positions. Same assignments, play after play.

So instead of attacking or even threatening the LOS with 5, 6, 7, or even 8 men (which would put loads of pressure on the O Line), our tackles, Hunt and Williams face double-teams the entire game, and we do not hold the gaps anyway, because our tackles are sealed by excellent offensive zone blocking. Meantime the O Line can calmly go about their business knowing exactly where the D Linemen are and what assignments they are carrying out.

On the 17 yard line clip, I think you could also add the mis-direction Winnipeg ran in the backfield. Thats what drew Armour away from the play. Then add the lead blocker taking on Marsh? To me the D-line looked fine on the play considering they were playing with two down linemen inside Winnipegs Offensive tackles. The fact that Armour was fouled by the mis-direction was the breaking point for the Lions on that play. He vacated his area, Marsh got blocked, Ried got yards.
