T.O.: Conspiracy in Dallas led to his release

Terrell Owens was "blindsided" when the Cowboys let him go, and he thinks there was a conspiracy among team officials to convince owner Jerry Jones to cut him.

"You hear all the speculation, and you talk to the owner of the team, and he reassures you, you're not going anywhere and then, out of left-field … you get blindsided," Owens told Canada's Rogers Sportsnet in a TV segment set to air Sunday night.

Owens said that Jones' son, Stephen Jones, the team's COO, was the driving force to release him after three seasons in Dallas. He was controversial and flashy, but Owens averaged 78 catches, 1,196 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns in his three season with the Cowboys.

"I know whole-heartedly he [Jerry Jones] wanted me there," Owens told Rogers Sportsnet. "There were some people I know who got in his ear that pressured him to make that decision. For that, it's sad. You let two or three people conspire to get me out of the situation."

Owens, 35, signed with the Bills days after the Cowboys cut him. He told USA TODAY last week that he does not plan on participating in the team's voluntary workouts but will report to its mandatory minicamp.

Buffalo, which has gone 7-9 in each of the past three seasons, will be Owens' fourth team after previous stops in San Francisco and Philadelphia.

"Why not?" Owens told Rogers Sportsnet when asked why he chose to sign with the Bills.

"They were really after me, they wanted me, despite everything that had been said negatively about me. It was a no-brainer."

T.O. making news. Nothing new there. Should be an interesting year in Buffalo.

I'm going to be keeping a watch out next season for the Denver Broncos. I'm not a fan of the team but they've changed a lot this offseason. Shanahan (head coach-fired!) and now starting QB Jay Cutler (demanded to be traded-to the Bears) are both gone.

The 2009 NFL schedule has hit the street.

MLS (Major League Soccer) had quite an impact upon the Seahawks schedule. The 'hawks go on a three game road trip weeks 10, 11, 12! The last week of the upcoming season will be played the first Sunday of 2010.

The rich get richer? NFL draft grades favor the NFC East

USA TODAY hands out grades for the 2009 NFL draft:

GRADE: A

• New York Giants: They got what they needed and the guys that they wanted. Had targeted WR Hakeem Nicks, a big-body WR with great production who impressed at a workout at Giants Stadium. LB Clint Sintim led ACC in sacks, can move up and rush from line. OT William Beatty will eventually press Kareem McKenzie on the right side. RB Andre Brown gets a chance to replace free-agent Derrick Ward. WR Ramses Barden has the size (6-6) to bring to mind Plaxico Burress.

• Philadelphia Eagles: Traded a No. 1 previously to Buffalo for Pro Bowl LT Jason Peters. Traded up to get WR Jeremy Maclin, who may become the weapon so often deemed lacking from this offense. First time the Eagles used a No. 1 pick since 2006. RB LeSean McCoy is much like Brian Westbrook in style and should adapt quickly to the Eagles Offense. CB Victor "Macho" Harris, taken in the fifth round, could have gone higher and ought to fit well in Philly's aggressive scheme. Got CB Ellis Hobbs from New England for two No. 5 picks. Wow.

GRADE: A-

• Buffalo Bills: May have found four eventual starters in first two rounds. Had only 24 sacks last year so DE Aaron Maybin becomes an immediate savior. Lacks bulk at 236 pounds but quick off the edge. Traded back into first round for C Eric Wood, a position of need. CB Jairus Byrd lacks speed but knows how to play. G Andy Levitre is versatile, has played T, but figures more inside as the Bills rebuild their line. How much immediate help any of these players supplies is the open question.

• New England Patriots: They'll get help from this draft because they maneuvered themselves into 12 picks. Got talented people in numerous positions. S Patrick Chung is strong, has decent size, can pair with Brandon Meriweather. DT Ron Brace is a two-gap devourer of blockers and insurance against Vince Wifork leaving in free agency. WR Brandon Tate may pay dividends in a year or two after knee injury stopped a dynamic season. Could help in return game.

GRADE: B+

• Green Bay Packers: Shift to 3-4 dictated first two picks and they should be good ones. DT B.J. Raji will be the interior space-eater. He's 6-1, 323 pounds and uses leverage well. Acquired another No. 1 pick to get OLB Clay Matthews. He could start on the weak side. Other crying need was at OT, where Mark Tauscher and Chad Clifton both come off surgeries and are heading into sunset years. T.J. Lang brings size and a mauler's attitude.

GRADE: B

• Arizona Cardinals: Cardinals needed RB to complement Tim Hightower and found Chris Wells still on the board at 31. Durability issues may have dropped him but he's a tough inside runner and can only help the NFL's worst ground game. Rangy DE/LB Cody Brown fits in an area where incumbents Bertrand Berry and Chike Okeafor are getting up in years. Should give them some flexibility in their 3-4. Ballhawk DB Rashad Johnson will quickly find a role.

• Atlanta Falcons: Count TE Tony Gonzalez, acquired in trade for next year's second-rounder, in this evaluation. Filled biggest need. DT Peria Jerry takes over for the departed Grady Jackson as the run-stopper in a defense that lost five starters. At 310 pounds, he should be an inside anchor. Maybe fourth-round DE Lawrence Sidbury can help them balance their pass rush. Filled holes in secondary with second- and third-round picks. CB Christopher Owens might work as a nickel back but he gives away a lot in size (170 pounds).

• Cincinnati Bengals: OT Andre Smith carries some question marks but he is a superior blocker and got great references from Alabama coach Nick Saban. Conditioning and weight will always be questions. LB Rey Maualuga slipped into second round, should bring some toughness to the middle of a leaky run defense. He's a hitter. Some saw DE Michael Johnson as a first-round talent and Bengals got him in third. Edge rusher. TE Chase Coffman is a steal in the third.

• Cleveland Browns: Creative deal-making allowed the Browns to load up on picks and players from the New York Jets that coach Eric Mangini likes. C Alex Mack was the best at his position, solidifies problem area, but may have gone a tad early at 21. Both receivers, Brian Robiskie and Mohamed Massaquoi, will contribute quickly and Robiskie may start. LB/DE David Veikune may lack a true position, should get first look as rush end in 4-3 sub package.

Mark Sanchez: Wild weekend for surprise move on Saturday

• Seattle Seahawks: Got three likely starters with first three picks and made a trade that gets them Denver's No. 1 pick next year. LB Aaron Curry can step in on weakside where Julian Peterson roamed. Traded back into second round for C Max Unger, who can play anywhere on the line. Seahawks may look at him at OT first. WR Deon Butler's great speed gives the team a little depth at this position and a guy who's comfortable in the slot.

• Tennessee Titans: Got an athletic big-play WR in Kenny Britt and in the right spot in the first round for value. Britt has size (6-4, 215) and talent. DL Sen'Derrick Marks can play inside or outside, gives Titans front some flexibility. TE Jared Cook was a great pick in the third round and was probably the best all-around TE in this draft. Titans had named TE Bo Scaife as their franchise player and he hasn't signed the tender. RB Javon Ringer will find a crowded backfield but Titans like a surplus of backs.

GRADE: B-

• Baltimore Ravens: Traded up to grab OT Michael Oher, who can play either side. Some questions about Oher's consistency and footwork but Ravens do excellent work with their linemen. DE Paul Kruger is a high-motor pass-rusher who seems made for the "organized chaos" of the Ravens' scheme. Should get mileage out of CB Lardarius Webb on returns and eventually in a secondary with some vintage corners.

• Chicago Bears: Count QB Jay Cutler in this equation, cost Bears their No. 1 and more. Grade goes up if he performs. Bears had real needs in the pass-rush area after no player had more than six sacks last year. DE Jarron Gilbert has size and quickness and was a nice grab in the third round. Grabbed another DE in fourth round and a CB as well. Bears knew where their holes were and tried to fill. No real O-line help and could have interior issues.

• Denver Broncos: Solved the problem of an armada of RBs by reaching a bit for Knowshon Moreno. That said, he ought to plug into their shotgun scheme very well. Can catch and block. Logjam of RBs after free-agency signings (Correll Buckhalter, LaMont Jordan, J.J. Arrington) plus the holdovers. DE Robert Ayers was a one-year wonder but has quickness off the edge. Got good help for secondary with pair of second-round picks and the eventual replacement for Tony Scheffler in TE Richard Quinn. S David Bruton could be a stud.

• New York Jets: Bold move to go up for QB Mark Sanchez. This after ditching Chad Pennington and the dalliance with Brett Favre. Give them points for courage of their convictions in trading up and taking the Southern California junior, who could well be their starter this year. RB Shonn Greene buys them time to deal with Thomas Jones and his contract issues but the move up 11 spots in third round cost them a couple of later picks. Everything rides on Sanchez making a quick transition.

• Pittsburgh Steelers: Steelers let the draft unfold and took the best player on their board, DT Evander "Ziggy" Hood. A need? Not really. Hood can get upfield and pressure from the inside and who has enough big people? Filled a need at CB with Keenan Lewis though some teams liked him more at S. Third-round OL Kraig Urbik will be a bit of a project. Tall but not overly bulky, he lacks the body type at OG and the skills for OT.

GRADE: C+

• Detroit Lions: Never can tell with the franchise QB. What will the Lions put around Matthew Stafford to enable him to have success? And when will they risk putting him on the field? Grade goes up when and if Stafford produces. TE Brandon Pettigrew is a beast who will add some attitude in run-blocking, has had off-the-field issues. Secondary receives a boost from S Louis Delmas, who can get a little wild but hits and attacks.

• Houston Texans: Three of first four picks dedicated to defense, and rightfully so. LB Brian Cushing has sound fundamentals. Texans seem to see Connor Barwin more as a DE than LB. Kind of light (240 pounds) but he would give them a little more explosion up front, most of which now comes from Mario Williams. Glover Quin is part safety, part cornerback. Where do the Texans fit him in? They were already solid at TE with Owen Daniels but big Anthony Hill (6-6, 265) might help in run game.

• Jacksonville Jaguars: Got bookend OTs in first two rounds with Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton. Where does that leave Tra Thomas and Tony Pashos? Can't play four tackles, though O-line injuries were Jags' biggest woe last season. Expect a physical, mashing offense. Kind of a reach for DB Derek Cox in the third round. Snagged WR help in fourth and fifth round. Mike Thomas is awfully short (5-8) but has stretch-the-field speed. Jarett Dillard played in a spread offense at Rice.

• Minnesota Vikings: Went for a boom-or-bust type in WR Percy Harvin. A little undersized, has history of injuries and other issues and tested positive for marijuana at scouting combine. Also an explosive talent who will allow the Vikings to implement more varied offensive packages. OT Phil Loadholt could step in on the right side and solidify a problem area. Huge, at 6-8 and 337. CB Asher Allen has to remind Vikings of Antoine Winfield and that's a good thing. No center after losing Matt Birk.

GRADE: C

• Carolina Panthers: Everette Brown has that tweener look and slipped out of first round, where Panthers had no pick anyway. Great quickness as pass rusher but is he a true end, an outside LB or a situational player? CB Sherrod Martin is far from a finished product as a position of some need for this club. DT Corvey Irvin is a project but lends some depth. RB Mike Goodson has outside burst.

By H. Rumph, Jr., AP
The Eagles added WR Jeremy Maclin, left, and RB LeSean McCoy with their first two picks.

• Kansas City Chiefs: Bypassed sureshot LB Aaron Curry for DE Tyson Jackson. He'll fit well in Chiefs' 3-4 but he's not much of a pass-rusher and the Chiefs lacked painfully in that department last year after trading Jared Allen. Jackson seems sound but not spectacular as the third overall choice. DT Alex Magee could get snaps in sub package, not a true NT or physical presence. CB Donald Washington was almost a washout at Ohio State and a surprise choice this high (fourth round).

• Miami Dolphins: CBs Vontae Davis and Sean Smith have good size and good speed and provide immediate upgrades at an area of need for the Dolphins. Smith may ultimately project at safety, given his dimensions (6-3, 217). Those two made good sense but the WRs? Patrick Turner was hardly dominant at Southern California and Brian Hartline wasn't the top guy at Ohio State. Guess the Dolphins just like the big bodies to go with fleet Ted Ginn Jr. Is QB Pat White there just to run the Wildcat?

• St. Louis Rams: OT Jason Smith has that "can't miss" aspect to him but there's not much going on on that O-line between him on the left side and Alex Barron on the right. Smith replaces Orlando Pace. LB James Laurinaitis kept dropping and Rams got him with the 35th pick. If he plays better than he has been working out, he will help their porous run defense. His success may hinge on whether DT Dorell Scott can become a run-stopper and keep RBs from getting to the second level.

• Washington Redskins: Only five picks to work with. Kept them out of chase for Mark Sanchez. Got a little lucky that DE/LB Brian Orakpo slid to them at 13. They can play him up front on pass-rushing downs and at SAM LB on first and second down. Good pass rusher for team that is sound on defense but doesn't make big plays (sacks, fumble recoveries, interceptions). CB Kevin Barnes has height (6-1) and plays a physical game but may not have the frame to withstand injuries.

GRADE: C-

• Indianapolis Colts: Drafted Joseph Addai No. 1 in 2006 and now they're back again with Donald Brown? Brown lacks breakaway speed but fits the Colts' approach. Offense sputtered with Addai hurt. DT Fili Moala can perhaps become the interior presence the team has long labored to find. He's 295 pounds and can probably pack 10 more on. Got another big body in fourth round in DT Terrance Taylor (319 pounds). CB Jerraud Powers is undersized (5-9).

• New Orleans Saints: Just not enough picks to bolster this roster. Did fine with what they had. CB/S Malcolm Jenkins will bring a toughness to a weak back end. He and Tracy Porter could make an interesting CB tandem. Chip Vaughn probably fits better at SS than FS and there are questions about his tackling though he gets involved in a lot of plays. LB Stanley Arnoux is a little on the lean side (240 pounds) but should have time to grow before the Saints need him.

• San Diego Chargers: Extreme reach in first round for DE/LB Larry English. Not a team with a lot of needs, so that's probably OK. Protects them against lingering damage in Shawne Merriman's knee. NT Vaughn Martin should be known as Vaughn Mountain (6-3, 331). Could succeed a slowing Jamal Williams. Got no real insurance against premature end to RB LaDainian Tomlinson's career or the one-year franchise package on Darren Sproles. O-linemen are projects.

• San Francisco 49ers: WR Michael Crabtree fell to them and they grabbed him. They did not have much to work with after that, though, and they may not have done much with what they had. RB Glen Coffee shows few measureable NFL skills, does not approach what they have in Frank Gore. LB Scott McKillop is essentially Coffee's equal, though he excelled in combine workouts. Looks like a journeyman. QB Nate Davis joins a carousel, decent value in fifth round.

GRADE: D+

• Dallas Cowboys: No primo picks after last year's deal for WR Roy Williams, then had 12 choices on Sunday. Not a team with a ton of holes, though. LB Jason Williams does everything at top speed, including making mistakes. But he brings athleticism and hustle on every snap. OT Robert Brewster is big (6-4, 325) but a little short on strength and power. QB Stephen McGee could be a find in the fourth round. Career at Texas A&M derailed by coaching change and injury. Grabbed a couple of DEs in fourth round to offset loss of Chris Canty.

• Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Depends on how much QB Josh Freeman gives them. Traded up to get him and he's raw, though he owns a high-powered arm and can throw with zip moving in either direction. Hang this one on new coach Raheem Morris, who knew Freeman from Kansas State. Drafted a couple of D-linemen who don't seem to be special. Went for OT Xavier Fulton in fifth round; he's coming off shoulder surgery. Bucs ditched LBs Derrick Brooks and Cato June and got no replacements.

GRADE: F

• Oakland Raiders: WR Darrius Heyward-Bey seventh? He disappeared for games at a time, is not a well-rounded receiver but boasts the key Raider attribute — straight-line speed. Just a huge reach and not enough value here. Same for S Michael Mitchell, taken in the second round but mostly considered a much later pick, though the Chicago Bears said they liked him two picks after Oakland's. WR Louis Murphy blossomed as a senior, OK pick in fourth. LB Slade Norris nothing special.

Al Davis needs to retire. There was a time when his off the charts decisions were ahead of their time. Now they are just off the wall.

Giants, Eagles, Bills and Patriots did well. No surprise there.

:good:

I really think this offseason was the 'end of an era' in a few places. Big names moving to other teams or just moving on. Madden is another big one. I am looking at catching the Seahawks/Titans game (last game of the next NFL season) down at Qwest Field.

I have a feeling the Jets pretty much just ruined the future of their team by trading so much for Sanchez and Pete Carroll at USC did not think he was ready and it is not like he won't be able to recruit more QB's at USC so I would think he would know what he is talking about. The Raiders basically wasted a pick by taking a speedster without hands a la James Jett and Crabtree is probably happy to go to San Fran then the Black Hole anyway. I hope Stafford improves the Lions but I just don't see him being a franchise QB.
Thank you for everything you did for OUR Lions Mr.Ackles, we will never forget you...RIP

Favre released by Jets

April 28, 2009 at 10:40 PM EDT

NEW YORK — Brett Favre was released from the reserve-retired list by the New York Jets on Tuesday night, making the quarterback a free agent if he decides to again come out of retirement.

When Favre was dealt to New York from Green Bay in August, there were conditions in the trade that required the Packers to be compensated if the Jets moved the three-time MVP.

Those no longer apply if he signs elsewhere.

The 39-year-old Favre, who spent one disappointing season with New York, had requested the move several weeks ago through agent Bus Cook, but insisted he has no plans to come out of retirement for a 19th season.

"Nothing has changed," Favre said in a statement. "At this time, I am retired and have no intention of returning to football."

Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum also said Favre had not indicated to him any desire to come back.

That, of course, won't stop any of the likely speculation that Favre could end up with any number of teams, especially if the torn biceps tendon that hampered him for much of last season has healed.

After 16 seasons with the Packers, Favre had a tearful retirement in March 2008, but decided to return to football a few months later. Green Bay had already moved forward, anointing Aaron Rodgers the starter as a bitter falling out with Favre ensued.

The Packers traded him to the Jets, injecting excitement into a franchise that hasn't been to a Super Bowl since 1969.

Things started off promising as Favre played well and the Jets took over first place in the AFC East, with a playoff run in their sights.

But Favre struggled down the stretch with the arm injury as the Jets finished 1-4 and failed to make the playoffs, costing coach Eric Mangini his job.

Favre announced his retirement on Feb. 11, saying he was done with football — this time for real.
"Nothing has changed," Favre said in a statement. "At this time, I am retired and have no intention of returning to football."
Let us hope he does not change his mind again. One more renowned athlete who was not able to retire at the right time, dimishing his reputation. I don't think any more teams would be willing to give him an opportunity now, in any case (the Argos would probably consider it).

I had lots to say about Favre last year during the NFL offseason. I was stunned when he retired, then I accepted he did and then wham he's a Jet. My :2cents: ? There are a lot of long time NFL faces who will be away this upcoming season (Holmgren, Dungy, Favre and John Madden, just off the top of my head). I think the people filling in those roles are going to be under quite a microscope (the NFL is anyways but these are big shoes to fill).

Vick returns home with NFL comeback in mind

May 21, 2009 (AFP) - Disgraced former National Football League star Michael Vick arrived home Thursday to serve the last two months of his prison sentence for his role in a dogfight ring under house arrest.

Vick will work at a 10-dollar-an-hour construction job and begin trying to show critics that he deserves a second chance at NFL stardom.

A versatile run-pass threat in his days with the Atlanta Falcons, Vick was among the NFL's highest-paid superstars until being sentenced in December of 2007 after pleading guilty to conspiracy to operate a dogfighting ring.

Animal activists protested Vick after his admission that he took part in the brutal slayings of dogs that fared poorly in fights - including hangings, drownings, beatings and electrocutions.

But Vick met in prison with leaders from the Humane Society of the United States, hoping to work with the group to help others avoid the actions that led to his own downfall.

Vick and his fiancee arrived at his home in a car fitted with dark privacy screens, according to Chris Garrett, a member of Vick's legal team.

"He's happy to be reunited with his family," Garrett said.

Vick was fitted with an electronic monitoring device later Thursday morning. He will wear the device during the next two months before his scheduled July 20 release, which would allow him to take part in NFL pre-season training camps.

The Falcons, who still own his NFL rights, have said they do not want Vick back but would be willing to listen to trade offers from clubs who might want to give Vick a chance, provided he receives reinstatment from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

Vick, who will have three years on probation once his sentence is complete, deserves another chance in the NFL, according to Atlanta receiver Roddy White, a former Vick teammate.

"Mike has already paid his dues," White said. "If he gets reinstated before the season, there'll be a couple of teams that will be after him and give him a chance to play."
Ughhhh

So he is home. Does he have any pets at home?

I suppose some NFL team will give him a chance. I would say his second chance is having his freedom. He will have that. A second chance in pro sports? I would say he does not deserve that.

If no NFL team gives him a chance, I hope the Argos stay the hell away from him.

I think there IS a good chance someone will give Vick a NFL shot. There are so many times I thought Players had burned their last NFL bridges but not.

I did see a news story about some of the dogs who were involved in Vick's dogfighting setup. One poor dog had all its teeth removed so it could be a sparring partner. Looked pretty sad BUT now most of these dogs have moved on to pretty happy NORMAL type lives.

Yes, I read some stories about the rehabilitation of the dogs. Some of them were too damaged to save. Some of them were too vicious to save. Many of them were rehabilitated. The whole story was horrifying. It's hard for an animal-loving person to comprehend the cruelty and callousness involved.

This CFL fan says: "Argos, stay away from Michael Vick."

T. O. cool with cold shoulder from Romo

May 28, 2009 6:50 AM

If Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo doesn't want to refer to Terrell Owens by name these days, that's fine with T. O.

"Dude, I could care less," Owens said with a laugh following the Buffalo Bills voluntary mini-camp practice Wednesday. "I mean, he doesn't mention my name, that's fine. What about it?"

Owens spoke in response to a question regarding Romo, who declined to refer to the receiver by name after the Cowboys practised last week for the first time since Dallas released Owens in March.

Though Romo didn't say anything negative, the quarterback referred to Owens with only "he."

Wouldn't be the first time that's happened, Owens said.

"Bill Parcells didn't call me by my name either, so what's the difference?" he said, referring to the Cowboys former coach who would refer to Owens only as "the player."

Though Romo and Owens combined to produce more touchdowns over the past three seasons than any other NFL quarterback-receiver tandem, the two had what's regarded to have been a falling out last year.

Quiet news day.

When Parcells was with the Cowboys I used to watch his post-practice press conferences online. Although he was usually crabby, the conferences were still entertaining and often hilarious. When asked about Owens, Parcells would only refer to him as "the player," never by name. It seemed evident that Owens was the project of Jerry Jones, not Bill Parcells. And it would seem, the arrival of T.O. in Big D was the beginning of the end of Parcells' time there.

So now Tony Romo does not refer to T.O. by name either. Hilarious.

Stay tuned for developments in Buffalo.

If T.O. gets an endorsement gig, they should refer to him only as "the player," or elevate it to "The Player," or since his recognition factor is so high, perhaps just "He" will do it.

"The Player With No Name" - apologies to advertising posters for Sergio Leone - Clint Eastwood "Spaghetti Westerns"

"The Player Who is Known by Bad Taste Alone" - apologies to no-name brands of tea

On the back of his jersey, just "The Player" and his number ...
