Sorry David. I've been on the road and haven't updated my attendance spreadsheet yet for the last 2 weeks. fd45 is more wrong than I thought! ;-)

Re: Smallest crowd in 3 years expected tonight

Once again, the league schedule-makers didn't do the Lions any favours. They're playing a stretch of four out of five games at home in the heat of summer, with the trip to Edmonton their only away game. I've always wanted them to push for an extra home game after Labour Day when they can play on Saturday night and they don't have to fight the heat and vacation season. They draw bigger crowds in the fall on Saturdays.

The schedule will catch up to them later in the season. They have back-to-back games in Montreal and Hamilton, and trips to Saskatchewan, Toronto, Edmonton and Calgary, where they close the season on the road for a change on Nov. 1. With the tight standings in the West and all the fall travel in potentially bad weather, the Lions will have an uphill fight to secure a home playoff game.

Re: Smallest crowd in 3 years expected tonight

If anyone can give me proof that we once had a game with 9,000 fans at the game I'd like to see that please. I don't think that is true, but it seems to be floated around as fact.
I remember Ackles talkin about their season ticket sales as being that low, but i have a hard time remembering a game that had overall attendance that bad.

I have all the numbers (excluding exhibition) starting with the 2000 season and the lowest announced figure is 14218 for the 2nd home game of the 2002 season. 9000 is more likely ST holders or possibly an exhibition game crowd. Could be for some of those games in the 15000 range there were only 9000 fannies actually in the house.

That's just shy of a sellout at Taylor Field (It'll always be Taylor Field to me...)! 27,000 can make quite a ruckus...someone had a soundmeter at last nights game at Taylor Field and there was a peak of 122.7 in the Fourth quarter and a sustained average of 117.4 in the final 5 minutes.

120 dB = rock concert or a jet engine... Roar Lions Fans Roar - make some noise under that dome of yours!
Couldn't do it last night, the piped in noise turned out to be Celine Dion practice tapes. Broke some eardrums, so they quit the piped in noise for the night.

On the good side, we in the Esksfans.com section were able to hold Mass at haftime, as it was so quiet without it.

Maybe there was 30,000 tickets sold, but no way were there that many in the building last night.

Re: Smallest crowd in 3 years expected tonight

Last night was a wild Vancouver night. Just as the game let out a country music concert (Brooks & Dunn?) let out too. I have seasons tickets but the seats next to me are open. Yesterday a couple guys were there and they were hot. I've gotten used to the sauna effect but I really hope this new roof is going to make those hot days a little more bearable. I'm not emberrassed at a 'small' crowd.... the people that did make it were LOUD. BTW... I have never noticed it before but the scoreboad/advertising banner was saying 'MAKE SOME NOISE' when we were on defence.

First time that had surfaced or at least that I saw the "MAKE SOME NOISE", but also noticed a couple of times that the actual game stats remained up between plays as well, perhaps someone reads here.

So with that possibility in mind, is it possible for the jumbotron to display some great Lions plays of the current season during the inevitable challenge flag that we are not allowed to see replays of the play in question. Last night was brutal as I knew that the Esks were going to challenge a play, but they waited through the TV timeout before they bothered to toss the flag out. That was an extended duration of dead time for the paying customer, while the fan watching TV gets the prime view of the play in question, albeit with the idiot colour commentator screwing up the correct call.

Montreal has traditionally been a poor draw. If it was the Canadiens then it would be different.

They were showing 2008 Lions highlights on the big screen before kickoff for a good 10 minutes. Ergo, the possibility that you mention...is entirely possible.

I'm not sure SM. To SammyGreene's point in another thread, it's a little deceiving because you have bodies in two upper decks this year. There were probably, what, about 3,000-4,000 in Level 4 last night? Capacity in the Lower Bowl is 29,706. There were probably about 3,000 empty seats in Level 2 (Lower Bowl, mostly in the west end zone), so that would be about right.

Being a 15 year season ticket holder, a few observations:

* WAY more people wear Lions gear to games these days. Compared to 10 years ago, I'd say about 7 or 8 out of 10 wear licensed apparel or something orange to the game. 10 years ago that number would only be about 2 or 3 out of 10.

* Could the 7-11 experiment finally be paying off? Again, just an observation here, but there seem to be more seats occupied in the (two tickets for $39.95) 7-11 east end zone section this year.

* The yahoo quotient has greatly dimished at BC Place. :rockin: Sure, there will be some jackasses at every home game, but I've noticed far fewer disturbances in the stands and fewer idiots running on the field. Credit increased security, the "Fan Not A Fool" campaign, and the (higher) perceived value of Lions tickets as the main reasons. There was one problem in Section 8 last night that was swiftly dealt with. It could be that with a 7:30pm kick-off, some people have more time to get lubed up in the bars/parking lots before hand.

* although mostly ALL seats between the 30 yard lines are pre-sold, a fair number go unoccupied during the summer months. A friend of mine has a theory that these are corporate season tickets that are sold but go unclaimed. People are either away, entertain clients/associates less, or have no desire to go inside in nice weather.

Oh man, that pissed me off to no end. There seemed to be so many long delays with absolutely nothing happening. Sure does suck the energy out of a place pretty damn quick when that happens.

I was thinking the same thing - I wonder how many people toward the ends of the lower bowl are making their way upstairs for a slightly higher but more centered view, whether they've changed their seating locations officially or are just wandering?

At the very least, there's a lot more orange visible, and it's been growing over the last couple years. My brother-in-law was going to the game last night (a rarity for him) and he was at least digging out an orange shirt to wear, despite not having any official gear (he dug one out of the hamper... unfortunately it should have stayed there! *phew*)

I think that's always been a good deal... the growing hype and good product on the field the last few years has just led to more people looking for tickets, and taking advantage of the deals being offered.

Ha! I was talking to a girl who was "involved" in that... just by happenstance, got an "emergency" service call-out to a gas station last night, the girl at the counter was talking about the great game, and then went on about how her friends had "got them kicked out" :) That was just about the point I was moving over from 17 to chat with CartWheelFan, I saw the guards all hustling that way on the concourse, but missed all the actual fun :)

Someone should introduce those people to the Courage for Kids program...
