It is a good signing for the Riders and the league to know that the Riders are going to be solid for the foreseeable future.

Didn't much care for the man last year but he's still an asset for the CFL and he was instrumental in helping to shape the Lions in the early part of the 90s. Nice for the 'Riders to get some good news for a change after the departure of their head coach and MVP QB.

Not sure why this is bad news for Lion fans.DerekDD wrote:Sorry for the bad news for Lions fans but it is news......

Granted he has won Grey Cups on three different teams but in all three cases he, for the most part, inherited those teams and just made a few tweaks. When he has had to build a team himself he faltered pretty miserably.
I will say it was pure genius in matching Kent Austin and Kerry Joesph last year as they had some chemistry, as well as dealing with the salary cap mess left by Shivers has been good work. But I'm not convinced that this years team is any better than last years.
We had Eric Tillman as a GM and despite getting lucky and winning a cup here in 94 he didn't do much to improve the team and he left it in worst shape than when he arrived.
Time will tell if he will be good for the Riders long term, but to be honest he is much better than many of the other current GMs out there.

Tillman is a good football man, and an asset to the CFL. Good on the Riders to lock him down for a while longer. It will give them stability which is good for the league as a whole. Looking ahead to the challenge of defending the CFL from an NFL "invasion" in TO, having a well respected GM in Saskatchewan can only be a plus.
It's never bad news when you get to see someone to do what they were meant to do for a living.DerekDD wrote:Sorry for the bad news for Lions fans but it is news......

And I'll take issue with a poster above. He was in the midst of building a terrific team in Ottawa when that ownership situation fell apart (waaaaay too much faith in Paopao though). In fact, I think his stops in BC and Toronto both ended prematurely because of ownership failings/changes that were beyond his control as well.

While last year I disagreed with Tillman's media stuff involving the Lions, you have to respect the job he has done in taking the Riders from a collection of talented players and coaches who perenially underperformed to a Grey Cup championship, league MVP and now respectable with a 3rd string QB and a series of new players and new HC.
Tillman loves the CFL and has a media presence that helps build and promote the game and keep stories being written on it.
Your post hilites the differing way Rider fans think compared to Lion fans.DerekDD wrote:Sorry for the bad news for Lions fans but it is news......

This is not considered bad news here; it is good for the CFL. I hope Tillman continues his stellar work, however I don't appreciate his media pissant routine.

When Tillman arrived in BC In 1993, the team was coming off a 3-15 season.Zarquon wrote: We had Eric Tillman as a GM and despite getting lucky and winning a cup here in 94 he didn't do much to improve the team and he left it in worst shape than when he arrived.
He gutted the roster, made couple of great trades and hired Dave Ritchie as head coach. The Lions rebounded with a 10-8 record and made the playoffs.
The Lions were hardly the powerhouse they are now under Wally but under Tillman they did play above .500 and made the playoffs each of the three seasons.
He deserves credit for turning around a pretty bleak situation after the Doug Flutie debacle by the previous regime.
Yeah, Tillman belongs in the CFL even if he has to work in a CFL outpost like Regina. He's a little too much of a loudmouth and media blowhard but hopefully "Sir Eric" will learn to reign it in a bit when he has microphones placed in front of his face.

BTW that "outpost" happens to be the current owner of a little sumpfink called the Grey Cup.Big Time wrote:Yeah, Tillman belongs in the CFL even if he has to work in a CFL outpost like Regina.

Yes, yes I do. It may be an outpost, but they can spend spend spend like a Manhattan socialite.Big Time wrote:Don't you mean the Grey Cup* due to ET's egregious salary cap violations?

This contract extension for Tillman is great news for Riders and the CFL. Tillman has a lot of NFL contacts and pretty good media savvy and a lot of football passion. With the passing of Bob Ackles it may end up that Tillman picks up the torch and becomes a leader in helping keep an NFL team out of Canada.
However, the absolute best way to keep an NFL team out of Canada is for fans to not buy tickets in very big numbers to the Bills in TO. This seems to be happening as the first game is a month away and "cheap" seats are still available (now for a single game without having to commit to a multiple game package) for a mere $70 to $195.
