For myself, having seen wide receiver as one of the key needs for this season, I have felt some disappointment in the Lions perhaps not filling this team need.
Wally Buono and Roy Shivers have been complimentary about Clarence Coleman. He is not big. His speed is adequate, but not amongst the real burners.
This Clarence Coleman may be one of those players that flies under the radar, not flashy, but very productive. Slippery speed, good hands, elusive running. We will see. At this time, he seems like the best prospect of the new receivers.
Here is a scouting report on him from his draft year of 2002.
Clarence Coleman, Ferris State (5-11, 182 lbs., 4.48)
Coleman had one of the most amazing careers in Division II history. He is the all-time leading receiver in NCAA Division II history in both total yards (4,983) and catches (323), while holding both the school and conference career records for most receptions and receiving yards. Coleman also has established single-season school records for receptions (97), receiving yards (1,519) and touchdowns (15). His final career totals include 4,983 receiving yards on 323 catches in 42 games. He recorded over 100 yards in receiving in 27 games and is the all-time NCAA Division II leader in career receptions and yardage. Coleman's 8,009 career all-purpose yards and 49 career touchdowns include 5 punt returns and 2 kickoff returns for touchdowns. Coleman is very elusive in the open field, has deceptive speed and accelerates past defenders when the ball is in the air. He runs crisp routes, is not afraid to go over the middle and plays bigger than his size indicates.
