Good choice. Aside from his west division all-star selection in 1998, he rarely got any credit. It was a mistake for the Lions to release him before the 2000 season.
He was effective in his prime (and as I recall, gained a level of popularity as part of our all-Canadian D-line in the 94 GC), but a spent force by that time; he was often injured in the last year or two before the end. I don't recall that he resurfaced on another team after leaving us.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

Re: Top Ten Most Underrated BC Lions

Here are some of mine:

WR Jimmy Oliver: It was Oliver and not Alfred Jackson who was Damon Allen's favourite target during the run to the 2000 Grey Cup. Stalled contract talks ended his tenure with the Lions but he was very effective during his short time here.

DT Glen Scrivener: The Lions' Canadian depth was woeful in the early 1990s. Scrivener was brought in after being released by his hometown Riders and was basically handed the starting job at DT for ratio purposes. Would go on to one of the team's most consistet pass rushers.

DB Enis Jackson: Was part of Dave Ritchie's defensive overhaul in the mid-90s who came to the Lions from Edmonton. Was never an all-star or grabbed many INTs but just a rock solid cover guy at HB.

WR Al Charuk: Played in the shadows of Jim Young and Leon Bright in the late 70s but a solid and reliable Canadian reciever with good hands.

Anthony Cherry.....too bad he wasn't able to play a few more years as a Lion. He was explosive as a receiver and running back and packed some good punch for a smaller back.
Thank you for everything you did for OUR Lions Mr.Ackles, we will never forget you...RIP

I'd say Tony Cherry was very similar to David Williams in that both were part of the explosive offence of 1988 and both won awards, but were not too well-liked or remembered by the fans. Overall, I'd say Cherry was slightly more appreciated than Williams. Cherry was selected as a CFL all-star running back in 1988 and he also won the Eddie James Memorial Trophy as the leading rusher in the West Division.

In the 1988 WDF in Commonwealth, in the first quarter Cherry caught a long bomb from Dunigan and scored the Lions first ever playoff touchdown against the Eskimos. Then in the 1988 Grey Cup, he scored a 14-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Late in the game after Winnipeg had taken a 22-19 lead, it was Cherry who went on a long 58-yard run to put the Lions in scoring position to at least tie the game before the fateful play. Perhaps Cherry is not favoured by Lions fans because they still haven't forgiven him for his totally unnecessary rough play penalty on the Lions last possession where they were pushed back to their own 30-yard line and were deflated to a three and out.

DH 8)
Sciarra did indeed win that Schenley for being a jack of all trades playing QB, flanker, slotback, kick returner and a bit of DB. He had some injury problems that sent his career off in a different path than he was brought in for. He was signed as a QB and along with Rick Cassatta backed up Eric "Canadian Rifle" Guthrie in 1976. It was what he did in the other roles that won him the award as is evident in the passing stats or lack thereof. His 1976 stats include:
Rushing: 30 carries for 92 yards 1 TD
Recving: 34 catches for 563 yards
Passing: 8 for 31 105 yds 2 TD 2 Int
K/O Rts: 8 for 169 yds 21.1 ave
Pnt Rts: 46 for 598 yds 13.0 ave
Tackles: 2
Ints: 1 for 4 yds

After a short 2 year stint with BC Sciarra went on to play 6 seasons years for the Philadelphia Eagles as a safety and punt returner. He played in Super Bowl XV.

I still like Antonio Warren.....even though his blocking was suspect 8) he was very good as both a runner and receiver out of the backfield. I am not sure of Joe's "receiving" hands but I would like to see a few more screen passes or dump off passes to him next year.
